Dave Gibbons Talks Watchmen! (movie, that is)

If Moore is always so bitter towards his graphic novel adaptations to the big screen, why doesn't he offer to write the scripts?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

And Snyder was confirmed by Warner Bros for Watchmen on June 23 2006. He brought Tse on board the project himself.

And the draft that most people work from is Tse's first from summer 2006 which is widely available online.

Which he then rewrote at Snyder's request and dated November 10 2006 upon completion. About the time that Snyder was announcing that he'd turned in his draft to the studio in order to win his greenlight. And which is not widely available - try looking. And which returns the setting to the 1985 that Snyder uses as a major selling point for the fans.

And which still sucks - renamed Minutemen, Rorschach's dialogue (among others) largely rewritten, no alien, Veidt killed by Dan an' all...

You BET I'm pessimistic.

Just sayin'.

you are correct, i got me greenlight and announced as director dates crossed.

BUT

we are talking about a director that at least claims to have fought Warners to keep it PG13, fought Warners to have kept the sexual assault in,chanmged the setting back to 1985 (whereas Paul Greengrass was planning on changing it), whom most would who gets the material enough to have understood the impact the characters would have had on the world they live in, past the TBOF comic books, is fighting for some extra budget so he can film the TBOF sequences at least for the DVD release (suggesting he gets the metaphor).

Im really not fussed by changing the name from Minutemen. so what? saves me from having to overhear some halfwit from saying, no doubt loudly, "Who are the watchmen then" when the graffitti is shown.

I dont think the no alien side of things matters that much. as long as there is a form of hoax attack place, and its of a nature that could cause humanity toi unite, even for a short time.

Im not gonna judge re-written dialogue, cos i never expected it to be identical to the book It rarely is with the great novels either. doesnt mean it dont work.

you may not be a fan of it, but look at the changes that were made to LOTR. Still great films. A lot of the changes improved the satory as a narrative (such as no Tom Bombadil)

the only thing that worries me is the idea of Veidt being killed. Its important that he isnt, because of the importance of rorscach being prepared to die.

But I just can see that Snyder, who seems to utterly get it, being so daft as to not see that.
and if he does..well, its an adaptation. so be it. wont stop the sun rising in the morning.

Terrible news.

If Moore is always so bitter towards his graphic novel adaptations to the big screen, why doesn't he offer to write the scripts?

Because he wants nothing to do with the films. He wrote his stories for comics not film. He never wanted them to be adapted into film or anything else. He's bitter, because he never had the rights to any of his works in the first place, and he has had a really bad relationship with DC.

What may I ask did he rename them??:cmad:

plus didnt zack say he wanted to do it frame for frame like the graphic novel

And where in the cock did Snyder get this Tse guy, anyway? To save money? Does he get paid in malt liquor?

Tse wrote "Sucka Free City," which was directed by Spike Lee. I know it's a fairly acclaimed script, maybe won a few small awards as well.

I've never seen SFC, so I have no idea if it's good or not. I did read Tse's script, and I prefer the Hayter versrion.

When the re-written dialogue is sucky, as a lot of it is in Tse's draft, you bet I'm going to judge it.

you may not be a fan of it, but look at the changes that were made to LOTR. Still great films.
They're great films, sure. But they're still far-from-perfect, and make a lot of unnecessary changes to the source material.

A lot of the changes improved the satory as a narrative (such as no Tom Bombadil)
Sure. Good changes are great. But bad changes, as there are in Tse's WATCHMEN script, like unnecessary action scenes and an ending that is remarkably inferior to the graphic novel's version, cause problems.

and if he does..well, its an adaptation. so be it. wont stop the sun rising in the morning.
It might not. But it'll make me angry. WATCHMEN is one of those films where it shouldn't be made unless it's going to be damn good. And judging by the Tse script, that isn't the case.

The Hayter script had some problems, but it was still a lot better than Tse's rewrite.

still killed veidt though, didnt he?

at the end of the day, Tse's script may be worse than hayters. but IF that is fixed by Snyder, it wont matter. cos pple would hate on a better script with the wrong finish more than a worse script with the right finish.
Its one of the keys about watchmen after all, the way it finishes.

nothing ever ends.....

The comic is the comic and nothing will take anything away from that. So, I could go on and moan and groan about all of the changes that the movie is gonna have, or I can read the comic and see that it's still all there.

The movie is just a movie: a separate Watchmen universe where the same characters are borrowed and put into a 2-hour scenario inspired by the comic.

the graffiti never has to be fully shown, also, they could have a title card in the beginning quoting the original poem. Minutemen is also another reference to the doomsday clock, which tolls one minute after each chapter. it's little things like that which make up the richness of the story. to call the groups the watchmen and the NEW WATCHMEN? that's ridiculous. it's just lame. the story isn't meant for the feeble-minded, so if they can't appreciate symbolism, they shouldn't try to watch the movie.

Call it Battlefield Earth syndrome. The book was a good sci-fi story even with a little of the scientology leanings but the second you mention it...

You mean that movie with Travola all hairy?

"Watchmen would be a good graphic novel for you."

"Oh you mean that piece of s**t about the blue guy who almost could destroy earth or some crap... with that batman wannabe running his ship into that guy? I'll pass."
