Dave Gibbons Visits The Set and Loves It

Feh. Dollar Bill's costume isn't faithful. I'm boycotting this movie. Or maybe it is. I can't remember, because when I wrote my own WATCHMEN script I changed it up a bit. Hmm...

Good to know that it only took one shot of a costume belonging to a supporting character, who probably wont be on screen for much more than five minutes, to get you to, not only abandon the movie, but also boycot it. Bravo.

Good to know your sense of humor rivals that of Dr Manhattan.

Nice. I like how corny it looks; like the silly things the actors in the Batman and Superman movie serials wore in the 40's. It looks like what people thought a superhero should look like back then.

If I know Guard, he's joking :p

I think the head is too big and the suit is too busy.
Plus the raised webbing is stupid, instead the hands should have white squares.
And organic webbing is lame, hes supposed to have invented spinners.
Oh and he shouldn't have flames on him.
He's supposed to be perma-white.
He looks like the green ranger.
And where the hell is his beatles haircut?

And what's worse is that they decided to make ozymandias a cloud. (?)

Dollar Bill's costume should have been CGI.
1950s CGI.

Seeing as how we are unfamiliar with sarcasm, I shall close the register at this point.

You forgot about his brow ridge. The brow ridge makes the character, dammit.

The cloud = Galactus, in Fantastic Four 2.
And yes, the Joker.

In order, WalterKovacs was referencing Batman (from Begins), Venom (SM3), Spider-man (SM1), Optimus Prime, Joker (TDK), Green Goblin (SM1), and I think Doc Ock (SM2). Lastly Galactus.

Part 2!

Dave Gibbons has a man-crush on the Watchmen movie production! His intoxicated giddiness is reassuring, no doubt.*

Minor revelations:
The interior shots of Karnak will involve a "huge" practical set. (He walked through it.)
The Owl Ship is for real. (Fawk yes.)
Knot Tops will be in this movie. (Hellz yeah.)
Gibbons refers to the set of Dreiberg's brownstone apartment. (I hoped this would have been shot with green screens a la 300. Just kidding.)

Oh and the Institute For Extraspatial Studies. (But that was already confirmed by an alleged extra.)

But what is this: "...a grubby little hovel crammed with dressmaking dummies"? Rorschach's old crib/place of work?

* Actually, I just read an earlier blog entry by Gibbons wherein he describes his last trip to Arby's: "Finally, bloated but sated, arms around my new buddies, costumed and otherwise, it's my turn to smile for the camera." Who gets their picture taken after eating a chipotle chicken sandwich?

Also, even though we saw pictures of it before, Judomaster's Martial Arts studio? Judomaster, as in the Charlton comics character that didn't get a counterpart in the Watchmen universe? That's ****ing sublime, man.

Although it's been long-documented that legendary comic book author Alan Moore will never support any movie based off of his work (including From Hell, V for Vendetta, or The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), that's not the case with Dave Gibbons, co-creator and artist of Watchmen. Dave Gibbons visited the set of Watchmen at some point in December, and recently updated the official Watchmen blog with his report, and it's a good one. Here's how he starts: "It's perhaps the most surreal experience of my life." Sounds like a very good sign to me that Zack Snyder knows what he's doing if the original artist of the graphic novel loves being there.

Dave Gibbons is an English writer and artist, who has provided illustrations for Green Lantern Corps, Watchmen, and The Rann/Thanagar War, among many others. Here is Gibbons’ full post from the blog:

It's perhaps the most surreal experience of my life.

There they are, in a shadowy clubhouse, standing around a map of the USA, just as we'd imagined them. The smoke of the Comedian's cigar hangs in the air as I drink in the details of the scene. Framed old copies of The New York Gazette tell stories of past exploits; trophies glint in glass-fronted display cases; Moloch's solar weapon shines in a dusty corner and over there, on its mannequin stand, the faded costume of the original Nite Owl keeps silent vigil.

Then, a sudden flash of unearthly blue light announces the arrival of Dr. Manhattan and the tableau comes to life. The voices of quarreling heroes rise and fall, a Zippo flares and the map catches fire.

Somewhere, someone shouts "Cut!"

And I'm standing amongst them. Nite Owl shakes my hand. The Comedian slaps me on the back. Silk Spectre smiles a dazzling greeting. I'm overwhelmed by the depth and detail of what I'm seeing.

But more than that. I'm overwhelmed by the commitment, the passion, the palpable desire to do this right.

I'm starting to feel a glow that eclipses even Dr. Manhattan's…

Such an incredible recollection of his experience on set. If you read closely enough, you'll notice that Gibbons mentioned "the faded costume of the original Nite Owl" and below is a photo of him with that set piece. Yet again, Zack Snyder pays incredibly close attention to detail with the film.

I don't things anyone has or ever will get any closer to a comic book such as Zack has. This by far shows that good ol' Zack takes the cake.:woot:

Since Gibbon's is easily bought, we should write a petition to convince Mr. Moore.

Sin City did a good job of using the comics as storyboards, but watching the film didn't feel as good for me as reading the comic. Felt like it was played more for laughs in some cases, and felt cheap in others. Cheap makeup, cheap sets, B and C list actors, etc.

B & C list actors?
Clive Owen, Bruce Willis and Rosario Dawson?
