Hey all, spent last weekend at Comic Expo in Bristol where Dave Gibbons was present and spoke about his life and times along with his set visit to Watchmen. Unlike some, I didn't have a notepad or a tape recorder, so don't quote me 100%.
As I said in the Captain Metropolis thread, Gibbons said he'd been cut from the scene that he visited
Gibbons said that the level of detail in this film gives the original Graphic Novel a run for it's money. He gave examples such as....
A newspaper in the background of Hooded Justice which he studied. The photograph had the hero with cops in correct 1938 NYPD gettup. He then looked closer and the newspaper articles wasn't jibberish, it was actually a newspaper story that had been typed out.
He saw Jeffrey Dean Morgan walking around and stopped him and asked to have a look at his guns. On the inside of the handles, there are metal plaques which are engraved with something along the line of "Awarded to Edward Blake " and then the date and the President (I think it was JFK).
And apparently all the props in the trophy cabinets have signs detailing when they were aquired and in which adventure.
He was also going to have a cameo in the film as a Graffitti artist, but had to fly back to the UK, before they could shoot his bit, so as a consultation prize, he emailed them a copy of his signature mark and the crew have spared it all over the set (so keep your eyes peeled).
Also, he said that when he was working on the comic, he didn;'t throw any of his notes and sketches away, so he has a heck of alot. Anyway, he's now working with Chip Kidd (Batman Collected) on a book called Watching The Watchmen which collects all these scraps of paper together for the first time. There was a promo glossey folded freebie which I got a copy of,and it looks rather awesome.
