‘Interstellar's’ Jonah Nolan Developing ‘Foundation’ Series for HBO, WBTV (Exclusive)
By Jeff Sneider

The Oscar-nominated “Memento” writer says “everyone would benefit from reading” the sci-fi trilogy

HBO and Warner Bros. TV are teaming to produce a series based on Isaac Asimov's “Foundation” trilogy that will be written and produced by “Interstellar” writer Jonathan Nolan, multiple individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.

Nolan, who is already working with HBO on “Westworld,” has been quietly developing the project for the last several months. He recently tipped his hand to Indiewire, which asked him, ‘what's the one piece of science fiction you truly love that people don't know enough about?’

“Well, I ****ing love the ‘Foundation’ novels by Isaac Asimov. They're certainly not well-known, but that's a set of books I think everyone would benefit from reading. That's a set of books where the influence they have is just ****ing massive. They have many imitators and many have been inspired by them, but go back and read those, and there are some ideas in those that'll set your ****ing hair on fire,” Nolan told Indiewire.

Representatives for HBO and WBTV had no comment, while a representative for Nolan didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

“Foundation” follows mathematician Hari Seldon, who has dedicated his life to developing psychohistory, a concept that uses the laws of mass action to predict the future on a large scale. When he foresees the imminent fall of the Galactic Empire and a dark age that will last 30,000 years, he sets out to create a foundation of talented artisans and engineers to preserve and expand on humanity's collective knowledge with the hope of establishing a new empire.

The “Foundation” series was originally comprised of three books — “Foundation,” “Foundation and Empire” and “Second Foundation.” The trilogy won a Hugo Award for “Best All-Time” series in 1966, 15 years before Asimov began adding to the series with sequels “Foundation's Edge” and “Foundation and Earth,” as well as prequels “Prelude to Foundation” and “Forward the Foundation.”

Sony Pictures acquired “Foundation” in a multi-studio auction back in 2009 and attached Roland Emmerich to direct and produce. Two years later, the studio hired Dante Harper (“Akira”) to adapt the books. When the project failed to materialize, HBO spent big bucks to acquire the property when it became available earlier this summer.

Nolan co-wrote “Interstellar” with his brother and longtime collaborator, director Christopher Nolan. Jonah Nolan also created the hit CBS series “Person of Interest,” and with wife Lisa Joy Nolan, co-wrote HBO's upcoming big-budget sci-fi pilot “Westworld,” which stars Anthony Hopkins, James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood, Ed Harris, Thandie Newton and Jeffrey Wright.

Nolan, who has an overall deal with WBTV, is represented by WME and attorney Michael Schenkman.
Still waiting on that Westworld pick-up.

Cool to see him taking over TV.

I wonder what ever happened to his Great Chicago Fire movie.

Glad to hear that it's moving forward but I'm sorely disappointed that J Nolan departed this project.

HBO's Westword gained a lot (Nolan) while Skydance is taking a risk with writers of the caibre of Goyer and Friedman. The latter was the writer for the TV series Emerald City --I have seen just two episodes, while good they were nowhere on the level of Nolan's Westworld episodes.

Asimov's Foundation series need writers of highest calibre and a network that invested in their show like HBO. Friedman's best work IMO was the Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles and it was excellent --hopefully he goes back to that level. Goyer --I'm just waiting to see how his show Krypton turn out.

Hari Seldon is Nate Silver.
And Trump is, of course, The Mule.

Apple has picked up the rights to a TV series adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s seminal “Foundation” sci-fi novel trilogy being developed by Skydance Television, David S. Goyer (“Batman Begins,” “Da Vinci’s Demons”) and Josh Friedman (“War of the Worlds,” “Emerald City”).
Originally published as a short story series in Astounding Magazine in 1942, “Foundation” is the complex saga of humans scattered on planets throughout the galaxy and living under the rule of the Galactic Empire.
The action follows a psycho-historian who has an ability to read the future and foresees the empire’s imminent collapse. He sets out to save the knowledge of mankind from being wiped out. Numerous attempts have been made to adapt it for film and HBO tried a series attempt with the likes of Roland Emmerich and Jonathan Nolan attached.
David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross will also executive produce.

Man, I hope this gets made and is good. I absolutely love the Foundation series, the Robot novels, and many other stories by the late great Isaac Asimov.

What a complex and confusing series of events! I really hope this show gets made, because Foundation is my absolute favorite sci-fi of all time.

I still re-read the books every few years (well, the 3 original books) so I would really like to see this show made, although Apple would be far from my first choice to do it.

It's going to be interesting living in a world where no one talks about TV in real life because everyone you know will have different subscriptions than you.

That or living in a world where everyone is poor because everyone's paying for more subscriptions than they can afford, lol.

Lee Pace, Jared Harris to Star in Apple’s Isaac Asimov Series ‘Foundation’

Lee Pace and Jared Harris have been cast in the lead roles of the upcoming Apple series “Foundation,” Variety has learned.

The series is based on the Isaac Asimov novel series of the same name. It chronicles the saga of The Foundation, a band of exiles who discover that the only way to save the Galactic Empire from destruction is to defy it.

Harris will star as Hari Seldon, a mathematical genius who predicts the demise of the empire. Pace will star as Brother Day, the current Emperor of the Galaxy.

Pace previously starred in the acclaimed AMC series “Halt and Catch Fire” and also led the cult favorite ABC series “Pushing Daisies.” On the film side, he most recently starred as John DeLorean in the film “Driven,” which was the closing film of this year’s Venice Film Festival and also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. He also recently appeared in the blockbuster Marvel film “Guardians of the Galaxy” as Ronan, a role he reprised in “Captain Marvel.” His other notable film roles include “The Fall,” “The Hobbit” franchise, and “A Single Man.”

sounds great! Can’t wait to check it out. It’s actually the first time something about Apple TV has excited me

Bumping this thread since another thread was created.

Oh wow. That's some genuinely exciting news. Rupert Sanders is a great fit for this material. Great casting with Lee Pace and Jared Harris.

How’d I miss this? H&CF is in my top 5...

This article wrongly claims Foundation is a trilogy... it’s at least a pentalogy, let alone a heptalogy.

It was a trilogy for something like 30 years before Asimov added new novels and those original novels are still often referred to as "The Foundation Trilogy"
