Sci-Fi David Goyer developing Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" as Apple Series

It was a trilogy for something like 30 years before Asimov added new novels and those original novels are still often referred to as "The Foundation Trilogy"

I guess, I’m just so used to my 5 paperback novel set from Del Rey in the mid ‘80s.

I actually read the first Foundation book a few weeks back and absolutely loved it. I had no idea that there is a show in production and I am honestly doubtful about making this work in this format, but I am happy to be proven wrong.

I am not familiar with the books but I really like the genre and the concept so it has been under my radar for some time. Honestly I didn't know they had filmed so much before the virus hiatus. As for the trailer I expected a big production but this looks even more impressive than I thought. I hope it doesn't disappoint because I'm still very skeptical because of Goyer.

This actually looks really cool and that sucks because I will probably never get Apple TV, haha.

Apple's pretentiousness and self importance just puts me off of all their stuff. They couldn't even resist having Goyer stroke their ego in a trailer.

The series looks visually pretty tho. Ill give em that. Now the question is whether theyll make this available on bluray so I can watch this without having to buy their overpriced proprietary hardware.

You don't need their hardware to use the app, FYI. My Roku, Firestick and LG smart TV all have the app. It's a basic $5 streaming service, which you could probably just use a free-trial on to binge this if you wanted.

Foundation is my favorite series from Asimov. I really hope they don't mess it up. So far, it doesn't look bad.

And I am really looking forward to see how they will handle The Mule and his arc. It sure will be quite a challenge!

This looks really good, but looking looking good is only half the battle. Let’s see if it’s actually good.

Intriguing trailer. Hopefully that the series live up to Asimov's writing. Just that the fact it's Goyer as the show runner iffy to me. His Krypton series is balderdash.

Used to read the Asimov's series multiple times. I haven't read the Foundation series for a long while -- still have the hardback & softback gathering dust on my old bookself. heh Luckily, I have digital copies of all series on my mobile that I can go back & re-read.

So they gender swapped Gaal Dornick &

Eto Demerzel.

In the book Gaal Dornick was a psychohistorian who came to Trantor to become a member of Hari Seldon's Seldon Project which eventually led to the First Foundation. He was also in addition to being a Mathematican, an Encyclopedist.

Eto Demerzel is First Minister to the emperor Cleon I.
Under the guise of a trantorian reporter called 'Chetter Hummin' he set up the first meeting with Hari Seldon. Of course if you have read the book you would have known that Eto Demerzel/Chetter Hummin was in fact R. Daneel Olivaw, the humanoid robot that appeared in many of Asimov's books - The Naked Sun, The Caves of Steel, all robot book series and of course the Foundation series.

Mmmm. Hoping that’s just a bad teaser. It looks like it’s trying very hard to be Chris Nolan but Asimov came from a generation when people were excited about technology but still needed to be warned about its potential downfalls.

just wasn’t expecting literally everyone to have exactly the same frown on their faces the whole time

Having not read the books, I found the premise less than exciting and was waiting to see if the trailer could sell it better. This was ponderous to me and didn't do anything to raise my interest, but since it's a teaser I can wait and see if another trailer helps.

I wondered if there'll be a 2nd season? 3rd? 4th? 10th? Asimov's Foundation series is 7 books in total. I assumed that the Goyer's series will be based on the original trilogy --Foundation, Foundation and Empire & Second Foundation.

Each book is about 250+ pages (hardcover). The complete series, in chronological order:
Prelude to Foundation (1988)
Forward the Foundation (1993)
Foundation (1951)
Foundation and Empire (1952)
Second Foundation (1953)
Foundation's Edge (1982)
Foundation and Earth (1986)

Of course this series is a part of larger series that included the Galactic Empire, the Foundation and Robot series of books (18 books in total).

Check the timeline for the Robots, Empire & Foundation universe:

Just based off the trailer and the info I could find on IMDb, it doesn’t look like The Mule will be a part of this season, so I’m assuming they’re saving him and a whole bunch of other stuff for a second season. It looks like this season is all based off the first book and maybe a little bit of material from the prequels (which I’ve never read). I’m a little confused as to why Gaal appears to be the main character in this season, since in the books his role is so brief, but that definitely gives an indicator as to which book they’re adapting in this first season.

Yes, that Gaal was a minor character in the first novel. I'll have to re-read th book - it's been a long while. I suspect that you may be right that they're mixing materials from different books.

Incidentally Asimov wrote the three Foundation series in the 1950s , put forward suggestion that nuclear (atomic) power would change society. He actually believed that the rise of science will become the new faith, replacing religion. When I read his books back in the late 70s and early 80s I tut-tut his belief 'cause I still think that there are still too many ignoramus and that religion will always be with us. I have a good friend who keep trying to indoctrinate me into his belief in the 'real' power of Jesus... hehe. He's the kind of person who's ripe for the likes of Jim Jones. I told him to be careful.

I wish science was the new “religion” or basis for everything with a brain.

Sadly, especially our country, has reverted more to religion (well in politics that is)... ugh.

Science and the metaphysical are not mutually exclusive, in fact metaphysics are a product of the scientific reality of our own sentience and self-awareness. Religion, mythology, spirituality.. these things can be valid expressions and explorations of the metaphysical, just like philosophy and art. Unfortunately, there is a perceived dichotomy that is unfortunately re-inforced by widespread religious fundamentalism and by anti-faith prejudices within some of the scientific community, though of course there are many scientists who are also religious.

long time, that we heared something here

The visuals are nice, and I'll watch it for the cast, but I fully expect Goyer to Goyer it up.

The Foundation books are absolute masterpieces of classic science fiction. Read them in high school and again recently. Asimov was a genius.

Now if Jonathan or Chris Nolan were adapting these, I'd be cheering but f@$%ing Goyer ? That makes me shudder. It would be a bit like Michael Bay adapting Dune !

pew...after Apple didn’t even had a new trailer or at least a realease date, when they announced a new Apple TV box, I have my doubt, that this will happen soon.
I mean, would‘ve been there a better time to announce it?
