The film will not be called Superman and will be called THE MAN OF STEEL.

oh please ..!
we finally come down to this now !..are we?
windbags!
we can't call a movie for what it is now huh ..?

in that case i might as well give you a few titles that i can come up with right now.

the sneaking alien.

the last heir of krypton (or of mankind).

the adopted (son of men).

stranger from afar.

the human alien.

the simulated.

last of his kind (or the first) since i always thought that superman should be

part of a new breed of kryptonians that they had to create as a last resort.

man of tomorow.

mankind's last hope (or visitor).

kal el of the kent (or clark of the kent) lol.

the stranger from smallville.

spawn from krypton.

man without a world (or planet).

man from the lost world.

the last ( the new kryptonians) .

etc..etc..

man I could write a book about titles
but you have to hit the right one in order to have a success
like
Avatar.

I've always wondered if the creators of superman had purposely added EL to the last name of the superman's kryptonian family name as an Homage to the holly names of GOD's angels.

because it could have been Kal-iah instead of Kal-el.

ummmmm.....The Dark Knight anyone???

Diamondhead, There's nothing wrong with calling it just "the man of steel" if anything that signifies that this is a new start to the franchise what would you rather call it Superman Begins?

Are the titles you give examples of titles you think would be good or titles you think would be really bad? I'm not quite clear on that. Hopefully the latter since most of those titles are awful.

well...technically.....they could call it just Superman....since the 1st movie was called Superman: The Movie.

If they do call it Man of Steel, I hope that actually relates to what's presented in the story, instead of just being a title based off of one of Superman's nicknames.

Like, with The Dark Knight, they actually wove that into the story itself, with Gordon calling Batman a Dark Knight at the end of the film.

I hope they do something similar with Man of Steel ( weaving it into the context of the story ).....

Superman has been used for TAS aswell. So I think the Man of Steel is the right way to go. Yeah I'm with you on hoping they weave it into the story aswell.

Well, it was refered as Superman: the Movie, but you don't see that on the screen at all.

I have to disagree. After the Nolans calling their Batman movie 'The Dark Knight,' I'd hate that they should use the exact same idea for Superman (or any other similar character). They would be turning a great idea into a stupid cliché. A superhero movie is not any better because they call it as the superhero's most popular nickname and explain the reasons of such nickname.

This being Superman, the nickname "Man of Steel" is kinda self-explanatory. I don't see how they could try to explain the nickname without sounding corny.

Jimmy:"Why does he fly, daddy?"

Perry:"Because he has to, son, and we have to shoot him down."

Jimmy:"But he didn't do anything wrong!"

Perry"I know, but he can take it. He can take all the missiles, all the bullets... he is... Man of Steel!!"

Lol. (I am well aware that Jimmy is not Perry White's son, just go along with it)

well....I didn't mean they had to do the exact same thing......or literally mention/explain the name Man of Steel in the movie. I agree with you that it would then become cliche....even forced.

I just meant.....I hope the new film will present Superman with challenges ( physical and mental ) that show why he is called the Man of Steel ( strong, courageous, unwavering in his morals and principles, etc. ).

Please never try that again:dry:

:hehe:

Jimmy: "Lois, why is Superman flying away in such a hurry?"

Lois: "Because he just found out I'm pregnant with his half-human, half-Kryptonian hybrid son."

Jimmy: "Then.....why don't you look p****d?"

Lois: "Because......I can take it. Because....it was worth it. Because.......in bed......he is.....the Man of Steel! :o"

Jimmy: ":wow:........you......you do know Superman is really Clark Kent....right?"

Lois: "WHAT!!! That bumbling doofus!! I.....I.....feel so violated!! That b*****d!! Man of Steel my a**!! Come back here you pig!!"

Jimmy ( thinking to himself ): "Now she's p****d."

:whatever:
1)To me, the whole beauty is that Smallville should be a remote, distant, angelical place that doesn`t exist. It`s stupid to compare to Red Son. The rocket is supposed to fall in a farm in America and Kansas is known through the whole world for this mid-western look and feelings. Also, it makes the journey of Clark Kent to be much more symbolic and important if its from an distant place like Kansas to New York. If it`s something like an 1 hour away, it just diminishes the whole thing, IMO. It has to be a long journey.

2)Moreover, Kansas is known for its Tornados, great way for Superman to wake-up to his destiny. And Kansas is shown to the world as being this angelical place because of the movie Wizard of Oz. Middle-western values are in the subconscious of people. If you don`t know what is, you don`t know Superman. Go figure that out because i`m not going to answer this one for you.

3)Besides, states like Mississippi, Alabama, Kansas and others in the center/southern part of the united states are the foundations of the United States as an agricultural economy, everything that Superman stands for while Luthor stands for the coorporated/cold world...

Superman represents the country side/ Luthor the bad things of the city. It`s just ancient dynamics.

4)Moreover, I liked the idea that Superman lives so far away from civilization as we know that everything is a shock when he sees it for the first time. If Metropolis is 2 hours away, it`s just takes away a lot of that.

It`s the same reason we care for Greenbow, Alabama, in Forrest Gump.

5)I can say that because i lived that. I`m an immigrant, from Brazil and live in the US now.

All in all, Smallville should be far away from everything. A perfect place to raise a kid with superpowers.

And don`t give me this Russian Red Son nonsense, Kurosawa.

Learn to discuss things properly instead of going into one more whinny RANT over everything that is not a Siegel & Shuster creation.

Other authors improved the mythos in so many different ways and this is one of them.
Good points man

Honestly? I grew up thinking that Metropolis was supposed to be NYC and that Smallville was Upstate NY. It made a lot of sense to me. I'm OK with it being Kansas but I'd rather it was Upstate NY. There are a lot of small town, rural type places there and proximatey to the 'Big Apricot' would make it seem more believable.

It was shown as being located in a variety of places, from Pennsylvania to Maryland to New Jersey. And yeah, for some reason people don't realize there are tons of farms in the Northeast.

i thought smallville being placed in ks was something from the 50s/60s eras of the character. Where as the early 30s didnt really specifically place it in a state?

No, Smallville was originally placed in Kansas in the 1978 movie. Before it was depicted as being anywhere from several hours to right outside of Metropolis.

It was WAYAYY more than Siegel and Shuster that wrote Smallville as being somewhat near Metropolis. In fact, they barely touched on Smallville at all-most of the Smallville stuff was Silver Age material and was written by Otto Binder, Bill Finger, Ed Hamilton, Don Cameron, and Siegel himself. So this isn't a 1938 thing, this is a 1938-1986 thing. It helps to know your subject.

Smallvillemap.jpg

That's from New Adventures of Superboy #22 (October 1981),
Getting rid of the orphanage aspect is another good change that was subsequently made. Did Siegel and Shuster make the change or someone else?

They moved it away from him growing up in an orphanage to being adopted by the Kents in Superman #1.

Well.....one thing they better NOT change in Superman's origin/mythos is that he was raised in Smallville, Kansas.

For one, I'm from Kansas. So, I take great pride in the fact that the world's most iconic superhero is "from" Kansas. That's one of the main reasons why Superman is my favorite superhero.

Plus, being raised by the Kents on a small farm in Kansas instills the old-fashioned, down-to-earth "Midwest values" that shapes who Clark/Superman is.

Smallville, KS is an integral part of Superman's mythos AND character. Just read the graphic novel "For All Seasons" ( a story I hope they draw inspiration from ).

Nothing against Kansas, and I personally don't think where Smallville is really matters much, but "midwest values" is used as a code word by DC to justify portraying Superman as a WASP and as the "Big Blue Boy Scout".

well, I just think they should keep Smallville in KS. It's part of the character now.

yea its more known for ks now and i doubt it will change now.

Honestly it doesnt matter exactly where he lands. The idea is that he gets picked up by humans of humble background that instill in him what it means to be a good honest person and prevent him from becoming someone with a god complex despite all his abilities.

It will continue to be Kansas regardless.

Nah, I don't expect it to change. If they do care about Superman, though, they won't keep with the condescending idea that growing up in the midwest makes him some sort of naive hick.

I like the idea of Jimmy Olsen calling Perry White 'Daddy' and they shouldn't explain it either.

it would be funny as hell.

i don't know how relevant the location of Smallville is. maybe to a few.

In Sweden, where they for some insane reason translate everything into some Swedish variant, they actually call Superman for "Steelman".

They also call Donald Duck for "Kalle Anka". I have to this day no idea why.

Well, it's not a huge issue, more than anything it's just an example of how Hollywood has influenced the Superman comics...and how little many people actually know about them.

I've met some Swedish people and my lord, when they speak English, they pretty much sound almost American. But it was like their first time in America.
