Joy may be writer and director David O. Russell’s shortest film title ever, but it’s certainly his biggest project when it comes to scope and ambition.

“I wanted to do an epic, unexpected story about the interior life of one woman’s soul, from the ages of 10 to 40,” he says of the film, which is due on Dec. 25.

The title also refers to the owner of said soul, Joy (Jennifer Lawrence), a businesswoman who becomes the head of her family at the age of 27. To create the character, Russell was inspired by real-life mogul Joy Mangano — inventor and founder of Ingenious Designs — as well as the personal female influences of his youth, including his mother and her circle of friends.

“It’s my first film that really has the woman as the star,” he says. “What’s it like to become a boss and the godmother of a family and dynasty, both emotionally and commercially? You go inside that person’s soul, and it’s alternately hilarious, horrifying, and sort of joyous. Relationships are always complex, and nobody gets to success without breaking some of their own bones—and other people’s, too.”

Look's good but still not digging Jen in this role. What is she a mother to 3 kid's or something?

J-Law be killing it in these indie roles, boy.

I liked the trailer a lot, the visuals and J Law's performance look strong.

I'm surprised I liked it, because I hate, hate, HAAAATE O. Russell and his style.

The trailer was ok. But, it didn't really tell you anything.

Comes off as too young to you too?

This is the most I've been impressed by a David O.Russell trailer and I too have never been that impressed with him with the exception of Three Kings.

There's always been some sort of 'dryness' that I've never liked about his work. But more importantly he likes his actors a bit too much, at the expense of the overall narrative. American Hustle in particular was all over the place.

For this role? Yes, and people have said it since Jen got cast. She's playing a character who marries, has kids, Get's divorced (I think) and invents this miracle mop. :funny: Should've gone to an actress over 35 or something.

It was a problem I had with her in Russell's last two films with her. She just came off as being really young compared to everyone else to me.

Looks a little TOO quirky for my taste. But preferable than O'Russell taking the Lifetime movie-of-the-week approach.

''Ageism is a real issue in Hollywood, and like dry land, it is not a myth. Middle-aged actresses struggle to find roles suitable for their talents every single day, while younger actresses are constantly cast as the romantic interest for men twice their age. Russell is part of the problem. Lawrence is ten years younger than Mangano, and there are numerous actresses that could have played the role just as well as Lawrence - actresses who are of appropriate age. This isn't the first time Russell has cast Lawrence to age down a role: in Silver Linings Playbook, the character was originally written as a 39-year-old widow, and in American Hustle, Lawrence was playing a character based on another middle-aged woman, Cynthia Marie Weinberg (changed to Rosalyn Rosenfeld in the film).''

Even with the cougar phenomenon going on, older dudes with chicks half their age are still viewed as the norm in fiction. Is what it is. I am waiting for the inevitable Patrick Stewart/Selena Gomez romcom.

It was very noticeable in Ted 2, with Mark Wahlberg (44) and Amanda Seyfried (29). Not to mention virtually every Bond movie ever, lol.

I mean, it's true to life to an extent as a lot of chicks prefer older dudes, but hey.

Yeah, that's why I said I wasn't feeling Lawrence is those roles. She has the skills, sure and I know she and Russell like to work together. But, yeah.

It might've been too obvious a choice, but I thought that role in AH should have been Marissa Tomei's.

I think Amy Adams would've been a better Joy Mangano than J-Law. And she's around the same age Mangano was when she invented the Miracle Mop.

I suppose O'Russell couldn't get a greenlight unless it was Jennifer toplining...

I'm fine with prioritizing characters and performances over plot. I mean, Scorsese has been doing it his whole career. But, unlike many auteurs whose works demonstrate that principle, O. Russell rarely presents anything that feels authentic. If you're going to focus on character dynamics and interactions, at least make them feel believable. The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook are not as great victims to this as American Hustle - which poorly depicts the atmosphere of New York, New Yorkers, and the 1970s. However, his two best works The Fighter and SPL, lack in regard to something else - originality. We've seen these stories, which have been executed better by more capable directors, a million times. I really do not understand the love that O.Russell gets from both critics and the Academy.

I'm in the minority, but yeah, those are some of my problems with him without going on a crazy long tangent.

I doubt Amy will ever work ( Man I hope she really doesn't) with O' Russell again after the Sony leaks revealed she got verbally abused by him on the set of American Hustle so much that Christian Bale got up in his face and told him to ****.

He's a *****e as few other actors will testify.
