Sunday’s Arts & Leisure piece in the New York Times regarding diversity in American comic books not only included the first look at DC’s new Batwoman character, accompanying the piece was a slideshow gallery featuring character designs of the highly-touted “The Great Ten” – the Grant Morrison-conceived, Chinese government controlled superteam making their debut in a June issue of 52.

Here is a look at the images and the text descriptions of each character as described by the Times and/or the character sketch itself. Click on the images to open larger versions

click the link to look at the pics. im getting fairly irritated over this whole diverse thing, its like thierpushing it in my face. isnt the new asian atom enough, damn!

What kind of person is resistant to cultural diversity? I don't mean to disrespect, but the world is culturally diverse, the sooner it's cramed down all our throats, the sooner intolerance ends.

to me, DC's main heroes were always the "blue-eyed, all americans"...and marvel's crowd were the diverse, progressive ones. as for cultural diversity, half of children under five in the US are minorities. so a big chunk of the up-coming generation is going to be interested in heroes they can relate to.

i have no problems with diversity, i just think DC is just pushing it a bit, making a big fuss because this and that character are lesbian. and imnot really pleased with DC replacing established characters with more diverse ones(blue beetle, The atom), for the sake of having more diversity. they should just create new heroes who are diverse.

The only character so far who seems to be there for token ethnecity is the New Atom. The others so far seem fine, not replacing anyone just to have them as a different race.

It is about time anyway, there are far too many white characters and this brings more diversity, makes it more in tune with the modern world.

like i said in the atom thread...

Blue beetle...ted's dead, so the scarab finds a Mexican, no big deal.

China has a JLA type team..JLA has of america in it..thats right they shouldnt have to patrol the world, so yea it only makes sence that there are teams all over the world.

Lesbo cops, ohh come on, big deal, dont act like you've never seen em in the real world.

An asian Atom? why? why does one of the smartest men in the world have to me asian? and why does there have to be another ****ing atom...the other ones still around...thats just pushing it.

98% of fanboydom

j/k (kinda, sorta)

This new atom doesn't have to be as smart as Ray Palmer... this guys just a placeholder... maybe they'll battle inside a cell or something...

I like cultural diversity. My dream day would be when they have a Sri Lankan character anywhere in comics. Haha, yeah, i can dream...

yeah, i think cultural diversity is a big necessity in comics. I mean, the problem is, there's no reason for them to take a character and turn him into a different race, but on the flipside, if they created a minority character from scratch, it just wouldn't sell that well.

The easiest way to introduce a minority character without backlash is through the Green Lantern Corps, or maybe even the Speedforce. You know what a cool name for a speedster would be? Cleritas, which is what the c in E=MC^2 stands for (quickness, or something along those lines). Anyway...

you're so smart, you can be the new atom

I'm not smart enough to be the atom... Ray Palmer, on the other hand, is...

If he hasnt appeared yet what makes you think he might be a token? From what I read, which isnt much, he is from Hong Kong (is he still based there?) and there is supposed to be a lot of monsters and weirdness which makes me think their might be some manga influence to the story.

Really? I assume by DC's "main heroes," you mean the likes of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, etc. If that's the case, Marvel's about even. Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and most of the other "main" heroes of Marvel are as white as DC's, and they have about the same ratio of Americans to non-Americans.

He is based in Ivy City, he is based in the same job that Ray had in the same University.

Ryan's from China... and he's a young science whiz who campaigned mightily to assume Ray Palmer's vacant position at Ivy University - particularly after the recent death of his mother back home.

Ryan's a kind of a savant when it comes to his work - though he seems oblivious to his obvious charms amongst the clearly smitten female student body...

Ryan is all about the research... finding new answers to new and old questions... he will be less superhero than what we'd call "an adventurer".

He's smart for sure - and has a little bit of a problem in the "all work and no play" area... but he is learning the American Culture quickly and is even known to get off an accomplished wisecrack or three when the timing is right.

Apart from the China and the thing about his mother dying, that could all really apply to Ray.

cramming it down peoples throats is what makes them resistant to it...

I agree with that also.I dont want the new age nonsence comming to DC,Marvel is already hogwash.I dont want DC to end up that way also.

I havent seen any signs..and i hope it stays that way.:marv:

Okay. Let's start at the beginning, I agree that people should be open to cultural diversity.

But "cramming" it down people's throats, as you say, will only raise intolerance. People, as a whole, usually don't like being forced to do things, especially when it comes to something like "tolerance".

Also, I hate "tolerance", why do we have to stop at just tolerating people? Why can't we like each other? Or, lacking that, respect each other? But, hey, that's just me.

I'm surprised nobody's made a "Multi-Cultural Pals" joke yet...

Yes...I watch Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law. What's it to you?

:p

that's true, but i meant it more in the sense that marvel explored diversity first. like with the international x-men and gay characters like northstar. diversity was just never a part of say, superman comics. he's the naive, WASP from smallville.
