DC's Definitive Joker origin

Lovers and Madmen is my favorite Joker origin by far. The art really sticks with you after reading a couple pages and it's totally fitting. There's something just twisted and disgusting about the way it's drawn that attracts me to it.

I'd agree with the positive reviews, and say that yes, its the Joker origin that seems the most 'right' to me.

I personally really like the style of skewed expressionistic artwork (I'm sick of the tepid 90s style which seems to dominate most comics).

Good story, great dialogue and narration, and I like the way Batman and Jokers origins are entwined. The characterisation of the Joker was just perfect.

Pre-accident Jack was just as interesting a character as the Joker, which is a pleasant suprise since most stories can't seem to deal with that aspect of his character very well.
I don't buy the 'tragic' backstory for a character like Joker (since just about every other Bat-villian has a tragedy... why can't they just be *******s?).

So yeah, you've bought a great HC.

awesome stuff, thanks alot.

I saw a display copy in forbidden planet the other day and it looked really good (jokers head coming out of the acid) so im looking foward to reading it tonight. cheers.

Read it. Wasn't that impressed with it. The "choice" angle is ok, but it's just ridiculously absurd and hard to buy as an action sequence.

picked it up about a month ago, when it came out. like ive said previously in this thread...i dont dig on the last chapter or so...it felt waaaay too much like they were scrambling to finish the thing...so they just started taking ideas from different sources....but the first 3/4 of it...i absolutely love. if you reeeeeeeeeeally dig on the Pathos of the joker, and love the thought that j is just screwed mentally from the beginning...youd dig it. if you research any sort of psychopathy, youll see every element of "jack" is pure textbook. plus...i didnt start picking up the single issues until jack was "changed"...so seeing the prattle between jack and harley was gold!

I hated it, so far everything "confidential" has spewed isn't worthy of killing LOTDK. I was really hoping for a quality line.

i liked it, thought is was a good read but my only problem is that it doesn't fit with the batman canon. i wish it did because this is a better joker origin then other's, even thogh the others are great also. i just think this is creepier

LOTDK started with a bang (Shaman), but Confidential has just been .

This **** was horrible. The thing that pisses me off the most is that this completely wipes out The Man Who Laughs, which, IMO, is the perfect first meeting type story. I hate the idea that Batman was just going to let him die, and let that be the end of it. And Harley in his backstory. This sucked to me. Plus the art....... I mean....... come the **** on now.

Not taking from TKJ? Hellooo?! The WHOLE point of that book was to show that Joker could be/could've been anybody! "Just one bad day," right? If this is done to a T perfect, I MAY accept it as definitive. If it's f***ed up, I'll consider it just another of the multiple choice past Joker has, even if not explicitly stated.

Yeah, this isnt definitive. It isnt supposed to be. DC threw that out the window with the 2 page origin in the back of Countdown halfway through this arc. It's just one of the multiple choice origins.

With Lovers and Madmen... I actually liked His Joker's pre-accident personality a little better... dunno if its just me tho.
But I have to say that all in all... I enjoyed it :D

i really liked it, it was quite a nice read, but still, it isn't my favorite origin. i always thought about the joker being someone who just tries to compensate something very horrible that happend in his life by killing people and destroying each others lives too. he always was a very tragic charakter to me, that's why i go with the killing joke. but lovers and madman is still a very nice and interesting read to get an alternativ taste of what jokers life might be like before. it was ok.

You're welcome.:cwink:

I prefer this mysterious multiple choice of Joker's possible origins where we don't know which one it is. The poor failed comedian who is made to impersonate some guy known as the Red Hood, or the mob killer named Jack Napier, or the Red Hood guy. "It always depends on how you shuffle the deck."

don't get me wrong, i love it the most if you don't know what happened to the joker, but at least everybody has an origin backstory, and in my opinion - it's the killing joke. but that's what i like so much about the joker, everybody can create his own origin for him, and everybody will be right with it, because of the multiple choice theory. that's why i respect "lovers and madmen" so much for what it is; another possibility in a pool of origins.

I've always liked that too. But my favorite origin is "Case Study" from black and white. SPOILERS:

Where it turns out the Red Hood was a mob boss that enjoyed doing his own dirty work, and even after becoming the joker he was still sane. He just didn't have to hide his face anymore, and he could use his faked insanity to get out of getting the death penalty or life in prison.

My favourite origin for The Joker is The Killing Joke, but I agree that one of the great things about The Joker is the multiple possiblities of origin. One of the best things about The Killing Joke is that after showing you The Joker's origin, he then says that his past is multiple choice, so the entire story you just read could have been fabricated by The Joker. Any origin could be true.

well the Joker represents something so primal thats its origins cannot be traced. what he is has always been part of our conflicted humanity so it's fitting that the origin is suitably murky. we can only guess where the dark parts of ourselves come from, or why they even exist. We are not descended from perfect angels, we are ascended from apes. and if you look at chimps you will see they are cruel and horrible bastards who hunt and devour monkey babies. why must creatures be like this? that question is the basis of the Joker. it is only our manufactured morality that tells us what is wrong and it's a strange human contrivance that makes little very sense in an animal world. yet civilization is built our our agreed laws of morality and civilization defines us as an unique among all creatures. The principles by which we live can only continue to exist if we base them on something solid, which means providing and reinforcing meaning to all things. that is why Batmans origin is repeated for us over and over again. he has meaning, Joker does not, he doesn't need it, he defined by it's absence

wow i love all the ways that Jokers Orgin could of been....

But I Would Love To "Believe" on how Nolans Version of Mr.J.. was to become this way....

Joker starts out as a Comedian of coarse!

Joker needs money to make ends for son and wife or girlfriend.

The Mob love comedy but not Joker's Jokes? The Mob offers a Deal To Mr.J.

Mr.J does transfer's of money in Willy Wonka Trunks.....

Then Mr.J doesn't want anything to do with The Mob,

Mob lets Mr.J go and then will make a move to destroy his life!

"and here we go!"

Mr.J puts son to sleep.....then about 3 in the mourning...Mob hits the house,
they have them all tied up and Then mob proceeds the "Killing Cut" they start with Wife cutting her eyes out then cut her mouth, then son!

After son and mom die of stabs to the chest...(because a cut mouth and eyes cut out you don't just die)

Then Mob Give Joker His Sig...Cut......end.......

...Now this would be why joker colors his face white(for a dead look)Eyes paint'd black for cut out eyes......pretty much his own symbol to cause death.

I'm Getting a Comic Book made for this short "Nolan" Orgin of Mr.J!!

hope u guys like....

Any Joker without permawhite skin is not the Joker. Especially in the comics. He's been known to kill posers like that just because he's so offended that they're pretending to be freaks when they really arent.
