Dear Evan Hansen

Loved her in Booksmart. This show is terrible though.

Evan does horrible horrible **** and basically gets away with it cause he sUffErInG frOm sOCial ANxiEtyy!!! The show wants us to feel bad for him, but I just can't.

The score is solid, I guess.

Oh geez, I never thought you'd agree with me on this, but yeah, that show is way overrated, and sends a really troubling message to victims of bullying.

Not a huge fan of the score either. It seemed like a lot of this going on:

Glad to see Adams join the cast. Not the movie musical I'm waiting on for her, though. Give me "Next To Normal" with her starring, now THAT will get me hyped. And would hopefully be the ultimate move to get her Oscar at last.

That’s a great get. Can’t wait to see the movie

I am not a fan of this show. I think it is pretty overrated. Maybe will like the movie more?

Cool! I love Julianne Moore. Whenever someone asks the answer should always be Moore

Is the twist ending that Evan killed that other kid bc Ben Platt thoroughly looks like a serial killer in this.

Platt looks better as Evan on screen than I expected but, while there's only a three year difference between them, Kaitlin Dever still looks like a high schooler. Same with the actor playing the best friend. But Platt... does not. Not as bad as some instances, but it really sticks out when he's opposite actors who can still pass.

So, I knew about the existence of this, as my cousin's ex boyfriend helped produce the original show. That was not what I was expecting as the story. Probably should have asked for some more details.

And yeah, Platt looks out of place against the rest of the cast.

Only in theaters.
Good, that means it has not infested my streaming platforms yet!

I still can't get over the fact they cut 'Good For You.' I was already reluctant with this but removing that song (besides it being one of my favorites) is a huge blow to the mother's role and to actually holding Evan accountable for his misdeeds.

Was this successful as a musical?

Good message and serious subject matter, but bad execution IMO. None of the songs were particularly good or memorable. The musical numbers were often very dull and boring. Not much in the way of creativity or energy. The choreography was one note. Characters stay sitting down or in the same place most of the time. I never really felt like they were singing their emotions and hearts out.

Other times I felt like they were just rhyming their way through monologues and not really singing. Like they were trying to act and keep a high level of emotional intimacy and intensity but it's at odds with the fact that you are in a musical and trying to put on musical numbers.

The way people have really leaned into this for Ben Platt i think is unfair and kind of age-ist. Hollywood has been casting people out of their age range in these roles for decades. Green Book had 60-year-old Viggo Mortensen playing a dude in his mid-30s.

I think this was a fairly uneventful movie, but I don't think Platt's age was really the issue.

At least when they cast all 20 somethings to be teenagers together, they all look to be the same age. Platt just looks out of place with the rest of the "teenage" cast. Which may be unfair to him, but it doesn't make it look less creepy.

Ben Platt originated the role onstage, and he is a 20 something. Kaitlyn Dever is 24. Colton Ryan is 26. Nik Dodani is 27. Amandla Stenberg is the youngest of the main kids at 22. I'd say Colton Ryan didn't look like 17-18 either. Dodani maybe if you squint.

He's not "20 something", he's 28. More importantly, he looks much older then that. Which is what matters. Mae Whitman could convincingly play a teen in her late 20s. Ben Platt ain't got those kind of genes.

Yeah, it’s more IF you look younger than what age you actually are for film.

For stage, it doesn’t matter because theatre is about heightened imagination anyway. That’s not how movies work though.

So by all means cast a 30 year old as a teenager. IF you look look a Dane Dehaan or something lol

Yeah, it won a bunch of awards (Most of which should have gone to Come From Away, but I digress) and is still running on Broadway. Personally, I've always loved the music, but have never seen it. Which is why I was so mad to hear they cut some of my favorite songs from the movie.

With Platt's age, obviously Hollywood has been casting 20-somethings and older as high schoolers for ages. But in this case, age is really just a number. It all depends on how old you LOOK. And Platt looks older than his age, making him look WAY older than the rest of the cast playing his classmates. Compare that to his boyfriend and fellow Broadway Evan, Noah Galvin:

Galvin is only about a year and a half younger than Platt, but he can still pass as a teen (or, at least, Hollywood's version of one). The problem isn't how many trips Platt's taken around the sun, it's that he sticks out like a sore thumb next to his co-stars. Which makes the whole thing feel like a massive vanity project for him (even more so when you hear the producers and directors talk about the changes they made for the adaptation).
