I didn't see a thread on this series either which surprised me considering so many people consider it such a good series. I'm about 30 episodes in, and it's good, but it isn't the end all be all like some people make it out to be. I really have some serious disdain for Light and how he does things which I guess is the point, but damn he really pisses me off sometimes. It's a weird situation where I guess you're supposed to root for the bad guy, but I still wanted his ass to get caught. I've got 7 more episodes to go, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see how it plays out. Thoughts?

Well it isn't that you are supposed to "root for the bad guy", but more so just be riveted by how the main character tries to accomplish his goals. After you have watched this show you should probably try Code Geass.

Yeah, I finished it last night. It was okay. The ending seemed very contrived and convoluted to me, but that's true of pretty much the entire show. I'm glad I watched it to the end, but it won't be one that I'm in a big hurry to watch again. I watched the first two episodes of Code Geass, but it didn't catch my attention. I'm in the middle of making my way through Samurai 7, but I'll probably download a few eps of Geass and see if I can't get into it. Thanks for the suggestion.

I hated the anime ending. Mostly for trying to make you feel sorry for the bastard, Light, as he tried to out run death. The magna just killed him off on the spot.

He became such a whiny little ***** at the end too. I kept waiting on L to return too. :(

The manga is 10x better. I just could not get in to the anime, like I did the manga.

I tried, but man it was rough. I am not a fan in general of live action. Rarely one gets pulled off well.

I finished the anime series today. Overall, I really like it, but the end left a bit to be desired. While I liked it that Light was killed by someone who thinks like him, I thought it was a bit of a stretch that Near could beat him (it was established when Near first appeared that he was not as good a detective as L). Mello helped, but he didn't seem to do enough to be that influential. Near says he and Mello combined are as good as L, but Mello's not really in the show enough to support that.

I still think the show has great writing on the whole, but it could have used a few more episodes to better flesh out a few of the characters.

The first 2 were okay. not something I'd watch more than once. I haven't seen the 3rd.

The movies are decent for what they are. The casting is alright, Light wasn't too Shabby, L did pretty well. The cgi shinigami's, though they look cheesy, I think it was completely necessary because it gives them a non-human, other-wordly look. Everyone dogs that aspect of the film but I don't think it was too bad, could be better for sure, but the first 2 films are really not too bad at all. The one big difference that I actually sorta liked was:

In the live films, L suspects Light has somehow gotten his name in the death note, and had written his own name in the other one prior to that, thus allowing him 23 more days to live, AND catch Light in the act as he smugly proclaims victory as L "dies" in his arms. The third live film is L's own film, and it's about another adventure he has in his last 23 days of life, and actually introduces Near. The movie sucks horribly, though.

Also, I have read numerous times on various sites that they are going to do an american live action film adaptation, and it sounds like they are ripping Death Note a new one. I read they are americanizing the names, and that top pick for Light is Zac Efron.

Not my cup of tea man

Live action movies were good for what they were, the first two anyway. They essentially base them on the first 6 books, then skip to the end of book 12 with a different ending. The L spinoff was an original story, but lame and not worth the time.

The first two live action death notes are def worth watching...

the third film is an ok spin off to me

I just got into the series myself. I'm about 30 episodes in. I was absolutely loving the show until Light lost the notebook for the first time. I feel like after that, the plot just got really convoluted and nonsensical. The whole 'cat and mouse' game between Light and L was spectacular but now...eh. I still have bout 7 eps left, does it pick up again?

The whole thing winds up pretty convoluted.

You may want to prepare yourself for a disappointing ending. I liked it to the end, but nothing from the second season (episodes 27-37) is as good as the first 26 episodes.

I thought it was a good series, but like a few others anime series...just went on longer than it should have.

The beginning to middle of the anime were great IMO. I loved the back and forth and mind games. I was eager to see how Light would one up L or vice versa.

To me the series fell apart with L's
death
The show was appealing because of their back and forths coupled with their mindgames playing out like some massive game of chess. When L left, the series just changed for the worse. Then Mello and Near step in trying to fill that gap, and didn't come close. I found those two annoying. L catching Light I could easily root for, Light deserved to be caught, but I just couldn't stand those kids succeeding where L failed, so found myself subconciously hoping Light would win and kill them all lol.

If the series would have stopped prior to Mello and Near, and L, or even the other cops would have been responsible for Light's
death
I would have been MUCH happier.

Completely true. Light is an awesome character, but only in contrast to L, whom was even more awesome. L made the series so much more enjoyable once his presence was involved, and then they took it away. I kept thinking he'd appear somewhere later but he never did, instead we got some watered down version of L in Near, which...I just never got into. Once L was gone, I lost interest...dramatically. That being said, it makes me appreciate the character even more because they killed him off, rather than keep him going and he gets tired and overdone. so I kinda like the fact that he was gone. Perhaps they should have held it off for the latter half of the series though...

The series probably shouldnt have been that long to begin with. It should have just been like 25 episodes, The End. The author was probably trying to see how much he could get away with by breaking taboos but in the end it just didnt work. It was a solid series no doubt but it could have been much better imo. It kinda reminded me of Yu-Gi-Oh a bit how the characters knew exactly what each other's moves were gonna be and were constantly one-upping each other. lol

I think it's because of the length of the manga. The author wanted the manga to be exactly 108 chapters (an important number in Buddhism), and I guess this equated to 37 anime episodes rather than the usual 13 or 26.

i've been looking EVERYWHERE online to finally watch this, but with no luck. all of the sites end up being cheap gimmicks. :(
