Daredevil Deborah Ann Woll is Karen Page

I've never really read any DareDevil comics so I only know the more well known characters. Who is this Karen Page?

Original secretary for Nelson & Murdock and Matt's early (first?) girlfriend in the comics. Before Frank Miller's run, she left the series to become an actress before returning in the Born Again story. She was the first character to know Daredevil's secret identity.

I never really knew her from her original stories since I started with Miller and the Born Again storyline shows her at her lowest moment. That being said, Ann Nocenti did a good job with her character and I found her quite interesting to be with Murdock at that point.

Dear Daredevil Bros,

You had my curiosity, but now you have my attention.

She's fantastic. She's just one of those talents I knew would end up in a comic book role. I can't wait to see how she goes

I'm really happy about this. I love her on True Blood (even though the writing isn't always helpful), but that's the only thing I have ever seen her in. I was worried about what would happen after the show ends and where her career will go. I think this is a good step.

I don't recall anything about AIDS, but I assume the point is he doesn't want Karen Page to start doing porn and develop a heroin addiction. I think she emerged a stronger character because of it (although I'm mostly guessing because my knowledge of the silver age is a black hole). But she did emerge as a strong character and I think it's worth it.

In a way, she's the anti-Heather Glenn. Both had their addictions (and both revealed DD's secret identity for what it's worth), but Heather ended up falling and never recovering with her dependency on Matt being absolute (to the point where his abandonment of her led to her suicide). Karen, on the other hand, had some strong moments in Ann Nocenti and D.G. Chichester's runs that existed without Matt Murdock.

As Jessica on True Blood she's been nothing but charming. Her performances are also genuine and her charisma is overflowing. Daredevil is going to be awesome (even though that was sort of already a given.)

The AIDS thing was the worst idea Kevin Smith had in his run. Mysterio disguised himself as a doctor to convince Karen That she has AIDS. In the end of " guardian devil ", we didn't even Know if she was really ill. Disgusting idea, I hope That Marvel never use it

Great pickup and I'm sure she will get the character right considering that her real life lover is a blind man.

Ah, I haven't gotten to Guardian Devil yet. We're so far from there anyway that I think it's a remote possibility. Although, I suppose, you never know.

You guys think she should be blonde on the show or just stay as she is?

Yah, I also think she is perfect. But the character was blonde in the comics, so I don't really know what they should do... and the die hard-fans for sure will want her blonde.

I actually loved that storyline because it was so completely twisted.

Woll was always one of the best parts of True Blood, so I'm happy she's joined the cast.

Also, I heard somewhere else that she went blonde recently, so it was probably for this role.

I think this is a recent pic of her blonde

While I prefer her redheaded, Karen Page in the serie had to be blonde. She's really beautiful, even blonde. We are lucky to have such a great Karen.

I can't believe I haven't seen this posted anywhere yet. Deborah Ann Woll with blonde hair, talks about Daredevil at SDCC.

Great interview.

I imagine Karen Page will probably be more than just a secretary in this series. Maybe she'll be more like Donna in "Suits" to Harvey Specter.

Deborah Ann Woll Talks Taking On Daredevil Role After 7 Years Of True Blood

With True Blood wrapping up last night, Deborah Ann Woll can turn her attention to her next project, the upcoming Netflix / Marvel series Daredevil. She talked with Zap2it about playing Matt Murdock’s love interest Karen Page. But after playing Jessica Hamby for seven years, how do you approach taking on a new character:

I’m already starting to notice huge differences between the two characters [in "True Blood" and "Daredevil"]. That’s already kind of exciting to play. I can feel myself go, “Oh, if this was Jessica she would do this,” but wanting to kind of steer differently than that. It’s always going to be me in some way. I think, as an actor, that’s part of it. You have to bring some of yourself to it, and that’s why you have to revisit roles over and over again, so you can see different people bring themselves to the part.

So it’s always going to feel a little bit similar because it will always be a piece of me, but I can choose to respond differently or play things closer to the chest. It’s been a really interest experience, actually, stepping outside of Jessica. It feels sort of weird. Jessica was like an old pair of jeans. I knew every rip, every stretched out spot. It just fit me just right after so many years. Karen, it’s going to take a little bit of time, but I’m starting to figure out how to I fit into those clothes.

And what has been the most difficult part of changing characters

You know what’s funny, after a few years of working on one character, it was so easy to feel for [Jessica]. By Season 3, I could cry for Jessica at the drop of a hat. I cared about her as much as I care about myself, so it was just very easy to go there. Starting up with the new character [Karen] now, I remember being like, “Why is this so hard? I thought I was really good at this. I thought I had this whole emotional accessibility thing licked because it had been so easy for the last four or five years.”

And then I was like, “Oh, right. I’ve only known Karen for like four weeks as opposed to seven years.” I have to do this work all over again, and maybe in two years I’ll be at the point where I can cry at the drop of a hat for Karen. [ laughs] But it just takes a little bit of extra effort to get there, and making things even more real or higher stakes for yourself, whatever you’ve got to do to get yourself there. It’s a reminder of how special it was to do that one show for seven years.

Woll joins a cast that included Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Rosario Dawson, and Elden Henson. Steven S. DeKnight is the showrunner for the 13-part series that is expected to debut in May of 2015.
