Defiance - coming to Syfy in 2013

Goddammit. Now, they've gone off and killed [blackout]Connor Lang[/blackout]. And just when I was starting to like the guy. Seriously, why does the show have a habit of getting rid of the characters I like most? First Birch, then Sukar, now this...

Actually, speaking of Sukar... I wonder if it's only a matter of time before the Spirit Riders decide to leave. Between the vaccine incident years ago and more recently the thing with Sukar and now, the quarantine; Defiance sure isn't an Irathient-friendly place.

I really hated the reason why it was done. Damn you Datak! **** your reputation.

I have to admit that I enjoy the show. It is a combination of the crappy CW type of show and a HBO quality one. Very weird. But enjoyable.

Agreed. It felt like such a waste of what might have become an enjoyable character.

I really hope this show spreads its wings and moves beyond defiance at some point. I'm getting tired of this Datak BS every other week.

Datak is annoying but he has his part in all this. I think he could have found a better solution to his problem than that but he's an alien so his methods don't quite sync up... though thinking about it, it does for some people. It's the cheap, easy cliche to do but it works.

Hmmm I really never had any interest in this show until my local cinema announced that they will be screening this as well as Under the Dome pilot episodes this monday night, I might get a ticket and watch both.

The pilot for this was pretty rough in the last third so I wouldn't judge too harshly.

thanks for the heads up,tbh Im more keen on watching Under the Dome

Datak came off as a MASSIVE racist.
That's only one part of him. The rest is massive too in the arrogance, ego, self-importance, demand for popularity... pretty much any negative trait a being can have he seems to be abundant with. He has to be the most self-concious being in the series. Anything that reflects bad on him (in his eyes) is an insult.

All which hints he will either die a satisfying death for the audience or redeem himself in a major way somewhere along the road to humility and acceptance of others.

I want to totally write this series off. Really. The reason I can't? It's trying. It's really trying. But a lot of the time it fails. Yet the on paper setup is great. And it is doing it's best to get me to take all it's plot elements seriously. It is not playing these alien cultures for laughs and is even quite bold in some areas for American television (the legal brothel or the casual acceptance of homosexuality), but it's uneven in so many areas a show like this would have to excel at, from casting/acting to production design. I know a show like this is expensive, but the money has to be up on screen in some way to make it all seem "real". To get us invested in the many plots they got going on as well as the "case of the week" story. Get Ben B. from FARSCAPE to take over in season two and that would raise the quality of the show by quite a bit. If they started to at least get more creative with the way it's shot it wouldn't look so UNIVERSAL ACTION PACK. I want to like this show, and have watched it from premiere to now and will be with it to the end of the season, but next season is looking real iffy for me.

They have a companion MMO going along with it that's meant to invest in those very things; getting people literally involved with the story. The game is meant to take place simutaneously with the story but in another part of the country. I'm not playing it but I'm assuming there's enough people involved that they're calling it a success.

- Holy shtako! Who was that caged angel ****e?

- Liked the flashback scenes last night. It was weird seeing Rafe and Datak on good terms. Too bad that Datak let all the powers he gained go to his head to give the present world this prick. That was a bad ass moment for Rafe during the bar showdown with Datak before the wedding.

"Oh, please."

**lifts coat to reveal gun**

Datak backs down. :woot:

- Finally Irisa acknowledges Tommy as her significant other.

- The ex-mayor. I'm glad she's gone. I really didn't like her. It might be the actress because I didn't like her in Brotherhood either.

But that was Eloise Hawkins!
First we lost Locke on Falling Skies and now this!

Otherwise, I am enjoying this show...

Edit: Put spoiler tags for spoiler to another show...

Pretty good episode.

Graham Greene is really awesome as Rafe. I like how Rafe isnt some major ******* like Datak. He may be a hard ass but he's reasonable/fair and he cares about his daughter's happiness even if he hates Datak. I also liked how he's going to turn the mines over to the Irathients after his death to make amends for how they were treated and how the land became his property.

I like Datak quite well, he is a *****e but a good one. There is still a bit of honor in him.
I am also glad that the old mayor died, I didn't like the character and the fact that the Doc with a shady past killed her in her path to redemption was pleasant.
At the wedding I was expecting the girl to wear Datak heirloom, it could have been a nice gesture from Rafe.
About Datak's wife ( HG Well from WH13 ), she is really creepy when she plays the nice and subdued wife, her smile gave me the chills.

Datak's wife is HG Wells from WH13!?!:wow:

If you watch WH13 and didn't recognize her I would suggest to visit the closest ophthalmologist for she has striking features.

She has contacts in and albino white skin and hair. Unless you remember what an actresses cheek bones look like I'm not sure a casual viewer will recognize her. Her voice and intonation is even different. I mean now I see it, but without being told I didn't connect the two faces.

We are not casual viewers, we are the elite of TV shows audiance, we are the people who discuss and argue about meaningless details, we are the ones who spot tiny imperfection in CGI a miles away by a dark night.
We are them and you are one of us.

I guess you didn't recognize RDJ in Thunder Tropic ? :)

Yeah that was a nice gesture by Rafe. Datak will do everything in his power to **** that deal over.

Unless my eyes are mistaken, that was a character named Tirra (Brittany Allen), which seems to be the show's go-to "prostitute with dialogue" character whenever it isn't Kenya.

I think it adds a lot of depth to the character. I wonder what came about first - the souring of Rafe and Datak's relationship or the latter's hatred towards all humans. And I hope we get to see them both.

- Finally Irisa acknowledges Tommy as her significant other.

Anyone found her colourful, Irathient dress wonderfully tacky and quirky? And the knives... Never change, Irisa. Never change. :applaud

It's probably the one positive trait Datak has - his honour and nobility. Granted, this is in accordance to Castithan standards (which is hugely different from humans) and even then, he manages to twist and turn it into something horrible at times.

I remember way back in the episode with the giant, burrowing aliens that were killing people (Hellbugs, I think they were called?), Datak actually jumped in and protected Christie from the alien. We've now seen numerous times that Datak isn't the type to think so fast on his feet; which tells me he wasn't pretending. Rather, it's in his instincts to protect others - or at least women - from threats.

Did not recognize her. Thought it was a new Castithan character. She should keep that look.
