Sci-Fi Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three

One of them will move. It's just a bickering contest as to who blinks. But if I have to choose only 1 to see opening day, it's going to be Dune Part 3

Netflix that doesn't care about cinema revenue and wants to significantly diminish theatrical windows? That Netflix? And you're still talking about a deal that isn't even officially done yet and that if it happens they probably won't even be able to have a say in anything regarding WBD before 2027 anyway.
Officially no they won’t have a say, but they still would want it to make it the most $$ either way. It’s smart to move up.

To be clear I don't buy that WB doesn't want to move and the source is generally dubious at best. I just find it ironic to think that Netflix who infamously cares pretty much exclusively about subscriptions and has basically said that wants to shorten theatrical windows to 12 days is the one who will make the rational decision and move the film so it won't lose money lol.

Dune is in a unique position though cause that's a partnership with Legendary

They’ve proven time and time again (Frankenstein, Wake Up Dead Man) that they’d rather not make the most $$ to prove a point.

I'll be seeing the one with Florence Pugh.

My goal is to find a Dune 1-3 marathon. If they do it, then sorry Avengers. I won't be seeing you that day

I also think Dune has less incentive to move. They have their premium screens locked. I think a gamble for a Barbieheimer works more to their benefit than to Marvels.

Who also sued WB previously for messing with release plans with covid.

Avengers: Dunesday

:)

One of them has to move. This isn't going to be a Barbenheimer; both films are roughly in the same genre, and have a similar target audience. Not backing down worked for WB with Barbie; I'm guessing it's more likely that Doomsday blinks.

Well, they have almost a year to think about it.

They are absolutely not even close to the same genre. And given the time frame, there is plenty of room for both films. Now, granted, the $500+ (it has to be close to 600) film is the one that is concerned with making all the money compared to the $200 million film.

And given how things have been going for CBMs internationally, I know which one I would be more hesitant about.

True, but I still think the audience overlap between Doomsday and Dune is higher than you might think. They’re both premium “event” movies, and there are more people who will realistically see both compared to something like Barbie vs Oppenheimer, where the audiences is way more split.

Like, in my own circle, my friend’s wife took their daughter to Barbie but they didn’t go see Oppenheimer. Meanwhile my friend went to see Oppenheimer alone.

But with Doomsday and Dune, it’s different. My friend would actually want to see both. And I think there are more people like that than there are households that only show up for one side of a “Barbenheimer” situation.

Also, on this part.

“And given how things have been going for CBMs internationally, I know which one I would be more hesitant about.”

That doesn’t mean much in this specific case, because we’re not talking about some random CBM. We’re talking about Avengers Doomsday, which is basically the biggest brand in the superhero film genre. If any superhero movie is built to still dominate internationally, it’s an Avengers film.

So while I think there’s a slim chance, there could be room for both movies, I still think Dune will move.

And if anyone should be “hesitant” internationally, it’s Dune, not Doomsday. Dune isn’t beating Avengers Doomsday overseas, and as it stands Marvel doesn’t need to worry about Dune Part Three at all, because Doomsday is clearly committed to its date, it already has the countdown locked in.

Neither movie really wins opening the same day. I do think there is some audience overlap that could hurt the OW on both sides, but Dune has the advantage of needing to make less money. Plus, the franchise has momentum. So I expect Dune Part 3 to make more money overall than Dune Part 2, and it making say....800ish mil as opposed to say 1 billion (arbitrary numbers I am throwing out) is less bad than Doomsday, which if it doesn't at least out perform IW will be seen as a failure. Much higher bar when you need to make 2 billion dollars.

But like I said, I think it is all moot cause 1 of these will move. Whether it be by a week or maybe 1 of them comes out for Thanksgiving. But 1 of them will blink eventually

someone’s who’s been impacted by years of leadership, and is carrying that weight

After going full Marty Supreme on its promotional tour, Dune 3 is gonna be a fun one for Timmy. I hope he goes full Joaquin Phoenix circa Her.
