The Wachowskis Returning to Sci-Fi with Jupiter Ascending

This movie cost $175m to make, possibly more. Can't think they got too much money to cover the marketing. They could be in legit trouble if this bombs completely. You can't keep doing this.

No one has ever in the history of ever jumped on a bandwagon? Nothing has ever been hated on more than it deserved? Nothing has ever been over hyped based on past goodwill?

Stop it.

No where did I ever tell anyone they should like this movie that Im not even going to watch. I never said you hopped on the hate bandwagon or singled out anyone else. Youre just trying to start an argument now and its silly.
Also by the way, generalizing doesn't get you off here. Just ask C. Lee. Claiming people are mindlessly getting on the bandwagon is exactly what you are doing. And doing so while missing the point.

What Marvel or Star Wars film looks anything like this? Anything?

There's a good article at io9.com on how beautiful this movie looks.

Maybe the Wachowskis can repackage their script and concept art for Jupiter Ascending 2 into a Star Wars stand alone film should this film fail.

After all, wasn't Independence Day just the sequel to.Stargate?
The first thing they would do is throw out their concept art. :funny:

Oh, I just meant if it was Pixar movie or something along those lines (brand name, I guess), it'd be embraced as a family classic or just a classic in general. Just my 2 cents. It's such a cool movie.

And don't get me started on John Carter. I dug the hell out of that too. :csad:
The movie may still be a hit, you never know. But I honestly can't imagine it.

All right, bandwagons and hatewagons don't exist.

Everybody arrives at their conclusions through well-considered, rational thought combined with an emotional response that is sincere, specific, and coherent to the individual.

Furthere, there is no such thing as the comfort of the familiar, and known intellectual property has no advantage in attracting a clientelle.

Yes unfair hate bandwagons exist and so do love bandwagons. That sucks. You know what also exists?

Studios pulling their film at the last second and dumping it into February and mediocre at best trailers which make the film look like a super expensive version of one of those "edgy" reimagined fairytales that come on sy fy every few years.

I hope that I get to eat crow, I hope the film is good and is a big box office success but unfortunately none of those things seem super likely to me right now, especially the box office success.

Say are you guys this outraged when people hate on the latest M night Shyamalan movie before seeing it? He mostly makes original films, we should stand up for him.

Also Seventh Son is based on a book and people think that looks like hot garbage as well.

The problem with your argument is the obvious disconnect between a the familiar and this film. They haven't made Star Wars movie that looks like this. GotG was already set in space, we meant more then a few races. The film looked nothing like this, nor does it match the tone.

Do people hate just to hate? Yes. Do people love their brands who have shown consistent quality and make movies they enjoy? Yes. Jupiter Ascending looks nothing like them. It will have to find its own audience.

The Sundance screening would have to get people raving about it on social media, and the fact it hasn't screened for critics yet (or embargoed reviews) isn't a good sign. But even that won't help it that much. It's the marketing and lack of good buzz period.

Also this movie would've been an easier sell if Tatum and Kunis weren't in it. Andy and Lana Wachowski should've picked two unknown actors (or recognizable actors that fit) and got A-list talent in supporting roles to add prestige.

Nah. M. Night is delusional. Y'all ever read about him trying to make Lady in the Water? Good lord. I wish he'd turn himself around, but I think he's too far gone.

Exactly. Why would WB do this if they thought they didn't have a mess on their hands? They could of course be wrong, but they are releasing a film that will end up costing them well over $200m to make, market and distribute, the wee after the Super Bowl.

Now maybe they found a new hot spot, like March, early April and August have become. But I doubt that is there reasoning here.

It is almost ironic that both this and Seventh Son come out the same day. Two WB projects that they basically gave up on. They just couldn't find anyone else to take JA off their hands.

Hey, it isn't like M. Night doesn't have his own fans who feel the same about him and his work. Though like the Wachowskis both fanbases are becoming smaller and smaller.

I hate to point this out, but Legendary is responsible for that movie. It was under their distribution deal with WB, but Warners had no financial stake in producing it (unlike the 25% they have with Pacific Rim and Godzilla). That's why when Legendary left the Burbank lot and shacked up at Universal, it was able to take Seventh Son (and other pics in development) with it.

WB will have a scapegoat for JA: Jeff Robinov greenlit the film, who's now at Sony.

Yep if WB moved the film to March or April 4 to 6 months before it's release I would have looked at it as a mostly strategic decision to place the movie in a spot it has the best chance to succeed in but WB didn't do that...at all. It was a last minute move to February. Hell if it was always scheduled to come out in February I wouldn't have thought much of the date.

So Legendary paid for Seventh Son all by themselves? Wow. Thank you for the info.

How long before its release did they move it, a month or two? Yeah, that usually means something is up.

Moving BvS to March, a month that has had a far few hits the last few years, over a year out is very different then what they did with moving JA to Feb a couple of months before release.

While this is an apples-to-oranges comparison, Paramount also yanked G.I. Joe: Retaliation off its original summer 2012 date several weeks prior to release and moved it to spring 2013. That pic did pretty well despite the last-minute move, but wasn't gangbusters either.

First reaction that I've seen. From Devin Faraci, a Wachowski fan:

Literally no idea how that got made.

They also paid 100% for duds like As Far, So Below and Blackhat. Aside from 42, most of Legendary's 'vanity' projects have failed at the box office. They tend to fare better when sharing production costs with a major studio like WB or Universal.

It did as well as could be expected but it was a sequel to a well known property. I'm not saying JA couldn't pull a GI JOE and not completely tank I'm just saying Joe had a few more things in it's favor.

Hmmm...
Ramin Setoodeh ‏@RaminSetoodeh There was a suspicious lack of applause during the closing credits of 'Jupiter Ascending.' #Sundance2015
Ramin Setoodeh ‏@RaminSetoodeh Audience reaction to 'Jupiter Ascending' was mixed. Many agreed that Sundance was an odd venue for the film.
He's an editor for Variety, btw.

I'm sure he'll like it. His review was bought the moment it was announced the Wachowski's were going to direct.
Yeah I'm wondering if that means he loved it or something. It can be taken as a positive or negative reaction.

Probably because WB or Universal will stop them from making whatever they want. If they are involved, it means they see something there.
