ATOMIC ROBO is something I might buy in trade. I almost bought the first two trades once or twice, but never had the extra cash. I will eventually, though. Just ask INCREDIBLE HERCULES.

My favorite has to be the call from Tesla... and Robo trying to play off like he wasn't doing anything wrong.... WHILE CHASING THE HUGE CREATURE THROUGH TOWN.

I want to trade wait for Robo, but it's just the fact that it seems like a book that I need to support with each issue, so that I can keep getting more.

I was going to catch up in trades as well, but I read the FCBD issue (wherein Robo fights a f***ing uppity dinosaur scientist ) and I figured I might as well just hop on and sort things out with Wikipedia until I could get the trades. Luckily, each mini seems to be fairly self-contained.

That's never as satisfying to me as saving up and buying all the trades. The downside is that it keeps me from plenty of good stuff, like HELLBOY or the Geoff Johns FLASH. On the upside, when the time comes that I DO just buy all the trades and read up, it usually is very satisfying (CAPTAIN AMERICA, INVINCIBLE, INCREDIBLE HERCULES, etc.).

Besides, if you read a summary of the back-story on Wikipedia, there's really no point to buy the trade anyway if you know what happens. But that's my take on it. Reading a trade of something when I already know the summary usually just feels like a book report, since I know the major beats of the story and just check off mentally when I encounter them.

But, as I said, ATOMIC ROBO is on the radar. The fact that there are only about 2 trades, soon to be a third, helps.

I don't think knowing what happens is a good reason to not buy the trades, personally. For some comics, it's actually better because it de-emphasizes the things that are happening on the surface and allows you to read more deeply. The joy of stories is in the journey for me, not the ends.

The joy of stories for me is a little of both. The journey as well as the ends. Knowing one before the other can make stories not always "worse", but "less enjoyable" than they could have been had they experienced them fresh. I will, however, admit to sometimes being a very hard, critical audience. I am not easily pleased. When I am pleased, though, I usually gush like crazy.

For me it is akin to knowing the score of a sporting event but having not seen the game. I know how it ended, maybe a summary of the highlights. Is there a point to watching the game? Maybe, but certainly less of one, with less of a sense of drama. That is how I feel about reading a summary of a trade on Wikipedia before I buy it. Knowing SOMETHING about it isn't the problem. The back of a trade often has the basic premise. But Wikipedia often is a Cliff's Notes sort of thing.

You could argue that in most mainstream superhero stories, the "end" of the journey is pre-determined; the hero usually wins. But that isn't the same, especially in the last few years at Marvel at least. But to each their own. It would be easier for me to catch up on ATOMIC ROBO than, say, HELLBOY or SCOTT PILGRIM at this point, so it is on the radar.
