Diamond List for July 4, 2007

Er, isn't it Dargo K'tor? The future Thor? Goofy haircut, spikes on the costume?

That's what I thought, too. But near every character, there're tiny letters which I can only assume to be initials. The one for Bill, obviously reads "BRB", Thor's is "TO", Eric's is "EM" and the last guy's is "JO".

Do you have a digital camera or something? I'd like to see that poster. I've never heard of anything like that.

I'll try and post it when I get home. Funny thing is, there's no artist listed. It looks Hilbebrandt-ish, though.

Is it a poster of this?

Shut up, you guys just don't appreciate Thor's awesomeness. :o

.

Thor is awesome no doubt, but that poster....lets just say IMO if my woman saw a poster like that In my room, she would question my sexuality.

Dude, that's Dargo.

That's what I thought, too. The only assumption I can make is that the artist got the name wrong.

And I don't care what anyone says, my poster is AWESOME. So what if it's the gayest thing I've ever seen. It's still awesome. :o

The only Thor comics I have ever purchased (regretably) were Thor #445 & 446 as part of Marvel Galactic Storm company crossover, and I'm not planning to ever buy any again.

:yay:

That's a pretty crappy couple of issues to base your whole opinion of Thor comics on. Thor wasn't even the main character at that point, it was Eric "I sucked at everything and then I died" Masterson. :o

Action Comics #851 $2.99
Black Canary #1 (of 4) $2.99
Countdown 43 $2.99

No, no, no... you misunderstand... I only bought those Thor issues because of the tie-in to Galactic Storm... I would have never bought them otherwise.

And I was around when Simonson had his great run on Thor... mythylogical based heroes just bore me, so similarly to Wonder Woman, I have no desire to read either books. I just don't like the character.

The characters really do nothing for me...

:csad:

At least it added to the stable of new Marvel characters. Along with Gravity, Sentry and Runaways, it's been a long time since they added this many new (good) characters. (I'd add X23, on the strength of her minis, but not everyone likes her. Same with Arana. Both legacy characters. Sort of.) Hopefully it will wrap up in a way that future writers can utilize him. Maybe a Damage Control mini. Or have him make his way onto a team. This is a kind of character that has a lot of "Hawkeye" potential in him.

I know a lot of people don't like the premise, but I'm excited to see what will happen. I've only been a Thor fan sporadically (I was reading it during Walt Simonson's great run), but I'm looking forward to Donald Blake returning to the MU. We'll see.
You're right, Marvel has been trying to create some new characters, and then usually been forced to proceed to have them guest everywhere when their initial series fail, usually in part to low promotion and the majority of readers never giving anything new a chance.

I'm not sure if I would mention Hawkeye. He was a petty thief at best and pretty much fell into heroism right quick. Granted, Hawkeye was a shameless womanizer and presented as macho, while Eric is simular but nowadays he is considered sleazy as we see the ramifications. Plus, well, Clint never made out with someone on his best friend's grave (that would be Cyclops, who got more action out of it than Eric did). While Eric is growing as a character, if they make him an outright hero like Hawkeye he'll become boring. Hence why the question of "matching the magic" when other writers handle him is in order. As much as I flame him, Bendis actually does well writing *****e-bags (if he ever wanted Eric to show up officially on MIGHTY AVENGERS, which would get him a new solo in 4 months, guarenteed). Slott could probably handle it. But part of that charm of the book IS that Eric is an outsider, even if that also means most readers ignored his book.

As for THOR, I actually read some of THOR as a kid as that was one of the few titles my mother subscribed to and thus I read for free for many years (along with ASM, WEB, FF, HULK, and later DD for a while). I was usually the least interested in him. But, as I said, I'd be less than honest if I said I would see THOR #1 on the shelf and not at least consider buying it.

On that topic, it would be nice if on the first page, there is an editorial blurb that says, "APOLOGIES DEAR READER FOR THE UTTERLY WORTHLESS AND SHAMELESS PRELUDE TO CW TIE-IN'S THAT BOOSTED THE SALES FOR FF FOR TWO MONTHS PROMISING THOR WHEN WE BALKED AT THE LAST SECOND AND REPLACED HIM WITH A CLONE FOR ANOTHER YEAR. WHILE WE PRETEND TO THE PRESS THAT WE ORGANIZE THE EVENTS WE WRITE, THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS THINGS STILL GET JUMBLED AND IDEAS CAN CHANGE OVER TIME. WE REGRET THIS BAIT-AND-SWITCH AND PLEASE DETACH THE CARDBOARD COUPON IN THE BACK OF THIS ISSUE FOR A FREE THOR #2" But we know this won't happen. Joe Q's faring better these days than DiDio and he's got much to be proud about at Marvel now, but he still sees readers as wallets in T-shirts, not actual people.

Your mom subscribed to Thor? She's probably the coolest mom I've ever heard of.

Also, that'd be an awfully passive-aggressive note for Marvel to leave about themselves.

The coupon is a bit much.

I improvised. :) Lord knows if Marvel apologized about something like that it'd have to be somewhat snarky. Even in NEW JOE FRIDAYS, whenever Joe has to cop to something, he trucks out an editor (re: underling) to do it for him. But it's moot; Marvel never would apologize for the PRELUDE TO CW bait-and-switch in FF because they would deny any wrongdoing or give the "ideas change, shuttappayoumouth" statement. I just wanted to raise a point some may've forgotten. Hell, if I bought THOR #1 and found an apology there I'd probably give it an arc or two out of gratitude.

Yes, the origin of my birth as a fanboy stems from SPIDER-FRIENDS as a toddler (along with the SUPERMAN films and the cheesy Adam West BATMAN in summer reruns) along with reading mom's comics for ages. She got THOR until they cancelled it around the ONSLAUGHT affair to relaunch to HEROES REBORN and whatnot. So I got to read it for a while and it never caught on with me as much as ASM and WEB did. I even preferred HULK. I don't have anything against Thor, though, and have missed his spot as one of Marvel's A-List. Just because I don't care for a particular genre, angle, or character in the universe doesn't always mean I feel it shouldn't exist. Anyway, the story goes that back in the early 80's my mother dated some inker for GI JOE and got used to reading the boxload of comics he brought home from work so she got subs for a few books for over 15 years. She cancelled ASM in the mid 90's when the Clone mess got bad and so for a while it was just FF, DD, and HULK, which she dumped out of protest for the "Rawhide Kid is Gay" series, which I hated because I liked DD and Waid was kicking rear on FF. But, such is life. Obviously I cared little about either to buy 'em on my own, least until CW.
