CAPTAIN MARVEL #1

Rather busy week. Some good books that I enjoy, an iffy mini launching that I may or may not get entirely due to Brian Reed, and then...NEW AVENGERS, a book that literally brings bile to my stomach, I hate it so much. Take the good with the bad.

Look I know New Avengers is the link to everything happening in the marvel universe but if you guys hate dont buy it.I bought issue 1 didn't like it and never got it again and I know exactly what's going on in the MU.

Hot damn! What a week

That's good because I ain't reading secret invasion ether.

I shouldn't either, but it is the Marvel Event of 2008, and if I don't read it I won't know what the hell is going on about the universe. Everything Bendis writes becomes instant canon. I can only think of a handful of items where writers DARED to challenge his almighty keyboard:

1). Bendis personally depowered Iceman at the end of HOUSE OF M, and Milligan reversed that within an issue of two.

2). Greg Pak made the best case yet to avoid calling Hulk a killer of innocent civilians with "Hulk Math". I don't care for it, but the point is that Bendis' de-facto statement in his original ILLUMINATI one-shot that Hulk was a mass murderer is being challenged. As it is, while Joe Q personally sides with Bendis, the other writers and perhaps editors are divided, with some going along with it or agreeing, and others, like Pak, Dan Slott, and others, the opposite track that Hulk is not a killer.

3). Ultron is in MIGHTY AVENGERS, and, well...moving on to avoid spoilers. Let's say another writer will be using Ultron soon.

And that is really it. HOM and M-Day has completely gutted the X-Men as a franchise for about a year and quite literally the only stories you can do are space operas, personal soaps, or "how do we reverse M-day" stories. Most of their rogues aside for the same damned 5 or so are nixed, and so is any sense of a mutant community. Bendis' retcons almost never make any sense aside for his own self-important need to "leave his mark" on the Marvel Universe, like some animal marking territory.

Anything he writes in SECRET INVASION, which STILL sounds like a porn title, will be instant, de facto canon and NO WRITER will have the cajones to challenge it. Not. One. Bendis sold it well in his last interview, but he always does that. I'll be surprised if the whole shebang isn't a turd.

But I may as well give my shop some extra money for it. When you buy a comic, that is where it goes. Events are over-ordered. "Voting with your dollars" only counts for small books that literally need every Diamond order. SECRET INVASION will be over-ordered and a success no matter what. And within months there still will be dozens of issues collecting dust on your LCS's shelves, right next to 52 and COUNTDOWN. Since they don't like me reading comics in-store, I have little other option.

But your going to hate it.I' going to live a few years longer because I refused to read the other, one more day, house of m new and mighty avengers and in 08 secret invasion. It's better for your health dude.

I know. :(

5-6 years ago when I was getting back into comics during college, I was always confused by fans who would post, especially in the X-Boards of certain MB's, and hate it month in and month out yet continued to buy it. I vowed never to become that sort of fan. I've tried not to be, really. I've bailed on some books when they got bad enough. But I've officially slipped into the more hardcore fanboy camp now.

I think you secretly like New Avengers, but refuse to admit it.:o

I think you secretly like New Avengers, but refuse to admit it.:o

I often like PARTS of it, but often Bendis will include enough bad parts to negate it. It makes his work very frustrating. One page, scene, or even a whole issue can be good or great, and then another page, scene, or issue can be complete horse feces.

Look I know New Avengers is the link to everything happening in the marvel universe but if you guys hate dont buy it.I bought issue 1 didn't like it and never got it again and I know exactly what's going on in the MU.

Where did this idea that one must buy Bendis' books in order to be kept up to date on the MU come from? It's not true at all. What goes on in New and Mighty Avengers has nothing to do with what's going on in Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, New Warriors, Immortal Iron Fist, Loners, Runaways, Daredevil, Amazing Spider-Man, Wolverine, X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, New X-Men, Astonishing X-Men, Nova, Annihilation Conquest, Exiles, Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer, The Order, Sub-Mariner, Super-Villian Team-Up, Ghost Rider, The Punisher, The Punisher: War Journal, Heroes 4 Hire and I'd argue even Avengers: Initiative. There's nothing in any of those books about the Hood's rise to power, the symbiotes bomb, Ultron, etc. Not even in the solo books of the individual Avengers do the events that take place within New and Mighty factor in.

My point is, if you're going to read a book you hate, at least come up with a decent reason for it. Reasoning that you'll be completely lost without it, or that you won't be in on "the future of the MU" is horse ****.

Exactly. That excuse might've worked during Civil War, but that was about it.

Who's using Ultron again? And will it be Frank Cho Ultron or something more... boring.

I never saw the point of House of M. So I agree with you all the way. And I don't eve know what right Bendis felt he had to end it the way he did [BLACKOUT]having Wanda get rid of most of the mutants :oldrazz:[/BLACKOUT] . Will Secret Invasion be any good? Possibly. But he's already burning me out in New Avengers [BLACKOUT]with all the who's a skrull talk, I don't want to read that for four issues and then find out OMG YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTOR IS TEH SKRULL BUY THE TIE INS and OMG TEH SKRULLS ARE SO STRONG THEY DIDNT EVEN NEED TO SECRETLY INVADE THEY COULD TAKE US AT ANY MINUTE[/BLACKOUT]

I've played this game with you before. No answer anyone gives is good for you.

You picked a slew of books that are mini's or far removed from Bendis' books and you know it. My point is that stuff that happens there is instantly "canonized" and quite frequently is used as ore for events. CIVIL WAR had seeds in his titles, and so did HOM beforehand. Now we have SECRET INVASION coming and the ENTIRE build-up is in his titles, because this is his event, and all of his works from SECRET WAR onward are being used for it. I haven't read this week's ILLUMINATI yet but basically when Bendis writes usually becomes Joe Q backed Marvel Law. If he wants to say someone was a Skrull for years, then they are. If he wants to say Illuminati existed behind the scenes, then they did, even if it makes no sense. If he wants to say Beyonder is a Mutant Inhuman, then that's what it is.

I don't hate MIGHTY AVENGERS, it is almost too stupid to hate. Despite the fact that it stars Iron Man's Thug-Squad, it is light-hearted action, and I can understand that. But NEW AVENGERS is where the big ideas that Bendis feels the MU needs spring forth. SECRET INVASION is the biggest example. If you haven't read his crap beforehand, you won't get whatever crap he piles into that one.

I also like knowing what I am complaining about. And you need to read some books you hate to appreciate the ones you love sometimes.

I'm not in the mood for an argument which ends in your perennial opinion that I have no taste and that true fans read indie's or nothing at all. I just felt like replying once.
