Diamond List for October 10, 2007

No, it's not. The art remains good no matter who's writing it. And it's Winick.

Oh, it will. It will.
I liked the beginning of his runs of Green Arrow and Outsiders, but everything turned so bad so fast. I'm hoping adding Black Canary to the book will refresh his writing, and--

God, I can't even go through with that sentence. His Dinah is out of character. I'm just hoping this book doesn't totally suck.

I'm so sad that Chiang is wasting his time on GA/BC. I'm sad that Winick gets to keep his claws in Connor Hawke to further **** him up beyond all earthly imagining, too. It's like Winick ran out of social issues to ham-fistedly insert into his comics and no one with the power to do anything has realized that he really can't write anything else... :(

As a completist, I completely understand your gnawing need to get the next issue even though it doesn't satisfy you...

However, after buying titles I deplored during the 90's for 2 to 3 straight years, it really feels good to finally "delete" it from your pull list.

You'll feel better.... we'll lose interesting Bendis bashing, but you'll feel better.

:yay:

I mean it is a shame, logically speaking. 6-7 years ago when I got back into comics and started posting on MB's, I used to get confused at the fans who would endlessly buy books they obviously disliked for any ol' reason, either to leave a run complete or "hope it will get better" or that sort of thing. And in time I have become that. I know that. I admit it. Sometimes it drives me batty.

I buy NA for the hype of it I guess, the fact that it is Marvel's primer. HOM spawned from it and so will SECRET INVASION (which STILL sounds like a porn title to me), and that is 2 events in 4 years. I am sure it won't be the last time. Best to have a warning first. Besides, I also wonder if it is like comic book rubbernecking; you don't want to look, you know it only makes you late, but you can't help it.

I mean sometimes Bendis will have some good moment or line in there, and overall it has improved since CW, which is saying something. But I rarely enjoy it.

I am sure it will be a matter of time before Mighty Avengers gets to that point, another arc or two, and hopefully I will be able to drop that, if/when it happens.

I thought that was a great bit; she loves them, but is going to massacre them all because they're still beneath her. Certainly not whiney.

But Ultron has NEVER said anything like that before, EVER. He once wiped out an entire country; did he drone, "I love you" before his drones slaughtered them? No. He didn't NEED to. But, I am sure Bendis thought it was a great bit, and the simple fact that Ultron would NEVER say anything like that didn't matter to him. He and Millar are both common in that way; they write stories as bunches of moments stuck together and whether or not completing those moments would violate either sense or a character's personality just don't matter, because they "know best".

I mean if Ultron was going to turn into anyone, why not Hank Pym? It was his brain patterns that were used on his original programming; Janet was Jocasta (who still is running about in a green Antigone body, although she last popped up in DISASSEMBLED in her old body because Bendis & Finch just don't care about research for BIG characters, much less a C-Lister, and leave the Handbooks to come up with something). But I guess nekkid Hank wouldn't work out as well for Cheesecake Cho than Nekkid Janet. I mean it isn't unusual for a writer to shift things to cater to an artist's strengths; I just wish Bendis would go that far to cater to the strengths of his actual characters and less about what he DEMANDS from them.

Chiang needs to do more Dr. 13. Stat.
I don't know if Dr. 13 could really have any great stories without Azzarello, though. I doubt he'd write Dr. 13 with any regularity, either.

Maybe Chiang could draw a Croatoan Society comic with Traci Thirteen and Detective Chimp. Dr. 13 could hang around and be skeptical. :)

Now that's a good idea.

I think I heard somewhere that Azzarello is planning a follow on to the last one, something about the resurrection Captain Fear - so exploring life and death and existence more - like the last one did.

Oh, sweet. I thought he'd gotten his goofy metatextual story out of his system and was done with Dr. 13 and his band of weirdos.

But I still think they should cancel Shadowpact and have a Croatoan Society comic instead, written by John Rogers and drawn by Cliff Chiang. Maybe have a Ralph and Sue Dibny: Ghost Detectives backup.

That sounds great. So when are you becoming an editor at DC?

I wish. I don't know why they introduced Ralph and Sue and the Croatoan Society in 52 if they were never going to follow them up, though. I mean, for crying out loud, at least give them a mini-series. The stupid Four Horsemen warrant one, but a bona fide secret society of magic detectives don't? Come on!

Oh well, at least Rogers seems to be including Traci and, to a lesser extent, the Society a little bit in Blue Beetle. I hope he keeps it up.

They blatantly asked Rucka which one he wants to write more, Croatoans, Ralph and Sue or She-Question and Bat-Woman ... and we know what he chose. :/

Ugh, come on, Rucka. I know Montoya's your baby and all, but you've pretty much already ruined her. Just let her fade into obscurity so Vic Sage can eventually come back without problems.

Wait, where did you learn about that? I'd like to read it if it's an interview or something.

If Rucka wasn't writing Checkmate, I would so hate him.

If he were writing the Croatoan Society, I'd love him twice as much.

I didn't read it anywhere just guessing. I'm certain he wrote that stuff in 52 (think he said that on one of the 52 interviews on Newsarama) and it would have been his decision what he wanted to continue.
