The remake is a shot for shot duplicate.

So if the remake sucks, then the original also sucks.

That may be, but the direction is completely different. For [rec], the director told the cast nothing about what was coming, so he could get a real emotion out of them. He wanted them to be really scared and he accomplished that. They didn't do this for the remake.
