Horror veteran Romero returns to "Dead" zone

The dead are rising again. Horror maven George A. Romero has signed on to write and direct "George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead," following in the tradition of his 1968 cult classic "Night of the Living Dead."
With a story mixing elements of "The Blair Witch Project" and the long-running "Dead" series, the film will follow a group of college students shooting a horror movie in the woods who stumble upon a real zombie uprising. When the onslaught begins, they seize the moment as any good film students would, capturing the undead in a "cinema verite" style that causes more than the usual production headaches.
After going more than two decades without making an independently financed zombie film, Romero told his production partner Peter Grunwald he was frustrated working within the system. "I was trying to convince Peter we could just run off and do it ourselves," he said.

Instead they convinced Artfire Films to finance the under-$5 million project, enough to work with union crew members who've been longtime friends.
Romero's new script replaces the original's static-filled radio with new technologies like smartphones to inform characters of impending doom. But fans can expect the classic Romero style.
"It has my sensibility, my sense of socioeconomic satire," he said. "And it has my zombies! They're not rushing around -- they're gonna be moving slow." Added Grunwald, "There'll be a lot of howling." The film's four-week shoot is scheduled to begin October 11 in Toronto.

Haha, sweet, filming in Toronto. The premise sounds meh but I'll wait for some footage to judge.

I'm thinking Blair Witch with zombies so I like the premise.

Hopefully it doesn't suck like "Land of the Dead"...

Land of the Dead (2005)
Directed by George A. Romero
Rating 4/10

If you're a gore hound then you'll love this movie for everyone else I suggest looking for another movie. First off I really wish I could say there was a plot to this movie or some kind of struggle per chance but there really isn't since these things take up probably less than 15 minutes of the movie, all it is for one hour and a half is zombies eating people, zombies getting shot, and ****ty one liners. Dennis Hopper's character comes off as merely something tacked on to fill up time since his character really isn't essential to anything other than to just piss people off. All of the characters are flat and 2 dimensional. You really could give a **** about any of them pretty much taking away all of the horror that there could possibly be. Secondly the zombies themselves aren't out scary, especially the smart ones, I actually started sympathizing with them as the movie progressed. Also the concept of the movie is great but is hardly taken anywhere. So if you just like random gore for a hour and half this is the movie for you, but for the rest of us Romero has let us down.

Date Watched: June 26, 2005

Which remeinds me I need to pick up Dawn of the Dead...

dawn of the dead 3 disc special edition is one of the prizes of my collection

How many of these goddamn "dead" movies is he gonna do?:o

Sounds ok but not great.

He should've stopped after he made the cinematic waste that was Land of the Dead, or whatever it was called.

I feel that is an unfair review. After all, Land has just as much plot as the rest of the Dead films, and all the characters have their little quirks to make them memorable/interesting. (The zombies were supposed to gather some sympathy from the viewer, so how is that a flaw?)

Not to mention, Hopper's character is essential to the story. He's the driving force of an outdated society that simply doesn't work.

I really think that Land is a worthy entry in Romero's Dead series.

Land of the Dead was entertaining. but to me, it wasn't worth the 20 year wait.

Like what Flexo said, Land is a worthy entry but it's also nothing super special.
And I hated the 'samoen' actor in there: Terrible. But Asia Argento and the chick who played 'Pretty Boy' (Pretty Tomboy....clever) where hot

Still cant top his Dawn of the Dead:)

This sounds like a fun movie but i just hope the stuido hold him back like on Land (which i enjoyed)

Pillsbury? Pillsbury was awesome.

"What the **** does a Samoan know about hot-wiring a ****ing car?"
"50,000 cars stolen in Samoa every year."
"Well, a million in Detroit."
"Detroit has 50 million cars. Samoa, 50,000. Every one stolen."

:D

I loved that little exchange.

I barely remember it now which is evidence of it suckitude... From my mental notes, it simple was just zombies getting shot at and what not, and the characters felt forced. Land of the Dead made me realize the suckitude of Dennis Hopper :(

Watch it again.
I was disappointed when I saw it in the theater.
Then I bought it and watched it again and was blown away by how much I loved it on second viewing.
Some movies require multiple viewings.

And there was, lol, SO much more going on than shooting zombies. The caste system, the terrorism in taking the giant vehicle, the way you could sympathize with both the main guy and Leguizamo, the look at the odd culture that developed, with zombie cage fights and having your picture taken with a zombie, Dennis Hopper picking his nose...

Day of the Dead got the same type of reception. Thankfully, people revisited it years later and found that they really enjoyed it.

Will do, next time I'm in blockbuster, I'll rent it...

At first, when I read the title I was thinking 'ok Romero, time to call it quits on the series, it is played out'...but the prospect of a cheap, indie, Blair Witch with Zombies sounds really cool.

I can't wait. It sounds more fun and less serious than Land of the Dead. Anything Romero puts out is still better than 95% of the crap that major production companies release these days, in terms of horror. Pour on the gore!

Another Romero zombie movie? I'm there.:)

Kickaaaaaassss
