Dick Grayson Casting Thread

No chance of a trilogy with Affleck. They have to make a move with Grayson or simply do Bat prequels, but that won't work if Reeves wants to direct more than one.

I honestly don't think WB wants another trilogy of Batman film in this universe. I'm telling you, they're trying another approach.

Matt Bomer also would have been picture perfect.... right down to that sweet buttocks.

He's 39 though. I'd still take it honestly.

Maybe. But perhaps Reeves only signed the contract if it meant a trilogy.

Efron for Nightwing!

Myself (Jig96v) in another thread said:
The reason I see him as being so perfect for Dick is because of the "campy" past both he and the character have (High School Musical, past depictions of Robin in live action). I think the real-life parallel would be a great way to show the audience that despite their preconceptions, Robin is a really interesting character and more than something to just make jokes at.

More than Milo or Armie Hammer.

If you give him a star vehicle and franchise, he can open a picture.

We've seen that Armie Hammer cannot (and that was with the help of Johnny Depp).

Zac's been in several consistent bombs as the star, more than Armie. His old fanbase clearly isn't showing up anymore.

It really doesn't matter in this case anyway. Nightwing and the DC brand will be the incentives for marketing, not the star.

What are you inferring?

To be honest with you, and again this is just me talking, I don't understand why everyone seems to think Matt Reeves is signing on for a "trilogy?" If it's because of those three Ape movies, remember he didn't direct the first installment. Also this trilogy stuff seems to have been brought on by Jett who is probably just hoping for Reeves to take the Nolan approach for series format.

Honestly though. Beyond Highschool Musical, he can act, is charismatic and in perfect shape.

There's really no other choice.

If you're hung up on his Disney Channel background, you haven't watched him in the past 10 years.

Ryan Gosling was a Disney Channel actor -- look at him now.

A lot of actors have come out of the Mouse House. Wrong to hold it against him if he's capable to play the part.

And in his case, he's not only capable, but perfect to play Dick Grayson.

My last post fell into oblivion before this thread was prompted by today's news, so here goes again...

Effron is cool and all, but I think the point some posters are making, is that whomever ends up playing Dick has to be able to sell the "tough" part of it. Grayson might be upbeat and charismatic and all of that (and he is), but he's a tough guy; you don't get to deal (and succeed) with Gotham's criminals on a daily basis if you're not the toughest guy around, and being ripped and muscular doesn't (necessarily) make you tough, it makes you fit. An underwear model does not a fighter make.

This isn't a jab at Effron, Dick Grayson is one of my favorite characters and this is the same reason why I wouldn't want Armie Hammer as Grayson, he doesn't have that "tough" look; let me use another example: Tom Hardy, objectively speaking, if you just look at a picture of him and know nothing about, specially when he was younger, he has very soft features, he'd be even considered a "pretty guy", but there's no denying that he has that tough look about him, like he'd get in a street fight and come out on top; not saying I want Hardy as Grayson, that's just how I personally envision Dick Grayson.

Just my humble opinion, of course. :woot:

Articulated this better than I could have. Agree 100%

Are you sure Dick Grayson is one of your favorite characters?

Dick Grayson is a pretty boy. He's cocky and charismatic and the acrobatics and fighting skills always came easily and naturally for him. As opposed to Jason who was pure rage with little skill or Tim who had a better mind but had to work incredibly hard and never felt like he got out of Dick's shadow.

Dick has always been a pretty boy whose toughness was sneaky. He's able to take a punch with a smile and tell you to hit harder next time.

Efron can pull that off.

A guy with the outward toughness of someone like a Tom Hardy (I know you're not suggesting him, just that "type" though) would be wholly wrong for the part.

Batman has that outward toughness. Not Dick. Dick had charm, cockiness, confidence and hope.

Yes I am. Are you sure you're not being condescending here just because I'm going against your one and only choice??

Dick Grayson is a pretty boy, but he's a TOUGH pretty boy; I've never seen Effron sell "tough", could he do it? Maybe. And if he does I'll be glady wrong, but he's hardly the ONLY possible choice, there's lots of young actors out there who could pull Dick off.

Want an example of a pretty boy that can sell "tough"?? Taron Egerton (actually he's my choice for Jason Todd, but he'd do Dick just fine).

Not being condescending. It just seems that you're discounting one of his biggest traits as a character, which would be strange if he's your favorite.

Dick is a pretty boy who surprises people with his toughness. Because he doesn't look like a tough guy. He isn't all grizzled and hardened. He's light and cocky -- but he's a total badass. You don't expect him to be a badass or to be able to clear a room of thugs. But he can and he does. And he can do it with ease.

Taron Egerton would be a good choice for Jason Todd. And that's proving my point. Todd has the outward toughness. He's a homeless kid. He's a street tough. He's a thief. He's pure rage. He was an angry kid. That's not who Dick was. Dick is a twist on what Bruce Wayne would be if he was able to see what the life he was choosing would take him. Dick sees where vengeance could lead by looking at Bruce and chooses not to be consumed by it. That's who his character is.

He's not a tough, brooding guy. He's exactly the opposite.

Armie Hammer
Garrett Hedlund
Zack Efron
Richard Madden
Harry Lloyd

All solid choices for Nightwing

Just like several other people Efron is my favorite choice too. IF not Efron I am sure the actor will be in his age range

Let me put it this way; I agree with Dick not being grizzled and hardened (so many puns, Jesus...); he's your supermodel looking pretty boy, but he still has to have that "air" about him....it's in the eyes, I'd say. You should be able to see in his eyes that he KNOWS he can clear a room full to thugs with ease.

I don't know if I'm making myself clear here, but it all comes down to me not thinking I'd buy Effron as Dick, again, I could be wrong; just like you could be wrong by thinking that no one else could do it.

I think you hit your point the way you were trying to make it most here. So I think it's down to semantics. What you call tough, I call confidence.

But I can understand that you want him to have, for lack of a better term, the eye of the tiger.

That we can agree on. I just think that from his past work, and the physical commitment he'd give to the role, that Efron could bring that.

I also think that his time working with Seth Rogan has helped him shed his "perfect, Disney child star" image and has opened his audience to different groups.

My pick is usually Logan Lerman but I've never seen him play a confident character. That's my main issue with him. Efron would be great if they could actually introduce him properly.

I would be happy with any of the followin

Miguel Ángel Silvestre

Aaron Tyler Johnson

Richard Madden

I'd be good with Aaron Taylor Johnson. I think he's the proper age for a Dick Grayson opposite Affleck's Bruce. To me...

Dick: Mid-Late 20s, possibly in Early 30s
Jason: Early 20s
Tim: Mid-Late Teens
Damian: Pre-Teen

Richard Madden would be perfect. Taylor-Johnson bores me.

Taylor Johnson bored me until I saw him in Nocturnal Animals.
