I think that if the government shuts down, then politicians shouldn't get paid.

Legally they are going to get their pay, but as a gesture they should return the difference (however long the shutdown is) to the Treasury. Which can be reimbursed to the military, at the very least the frontline guys. Since they are putting their lives on the line, I think they deserve it. Not sure if it is mathematically enough.

Which is about under 2% in difference compared to the entire budget deficit.

Depends. No country has the balls to attack America (Yeah yeah the North Koreans, but c'mon now. They are miles away from developing anything that is able to hit America's shores or Hawaii or Alaska). I mean sure keep most of the troops, but cutting some of them isn't going to doom you all.

We are over 14 trillion in federal debt and fy 2012 budget is supposed to cost nearly 4 trillion and the DNC won't agree to cut 60 billion dollars? That is a little over 1%. They can't cut 1%. WTF!?

And people think we will still be a country in 100 years if this continues.

Well the rumors are it will be non-essential if a shutdown occurs. So I suggested the politicians return their pay to the treasury to pay for some of the troops in the most dangerous situations. It's better than nothing.

He won't veto it even though this is already his fault for not passing a budget last year. If he vetoes it, all of this will be blamed squarely on him.

I don't see how you could blame the guy when the GOP has already telegraphed it that it was their intent to shut the government down since last year. Medicare and HCR are non-negotiable. The Republicans and Teabags need to get a life and put out a realistic budget that's not at the expense of the poor and elderly.

Well we're staring at the abyss now. It looks like a government shudtown is all but inevitable:

1) Boehner broke away from negotiations with Obama and Reid and issued his 1 week extension that cuts $12 billion from social programs as a GOP wish list.

2) Reid has killed that "proposal" and says a shutdown is likely.

3) The TEa Party crowds are outside the Capitol telling/threatening GOP House members to shut it down.

And to think the GOP actually won. They got their $32 billion in cuts (actually $33 billion) that Boehner and Ryan requested but then moved the goal posts because of Tea Party pressure and refused to compromise back to their original position. They won they fight and were afraid to claim it because of things like this:

Now, here we are. I only hope this blows up in Cantor and the freshmens' faces next week.

Technically, it'd be Pelosi's fault for never passing her own budget, as Obama did submit one.

However, if you think that talking point excuses Boehner for letting the Tea Party force him to play politics instead of govern when he walked away from $33 billion, you're in denial. Some blame can be placed for Dems not seriously considering the $41 billion "compromise." However, they already compromised and the rest of that money came from defunding Planned Parenthood, EPA and other necessary programs that are on the GOP's ideological **** list. The Republicans could take their original proposal as a win and come back to fight another day on the new budget (which includes medicare reform!) instead of spending their wad now.

The GOP has taken this chip away for the much more important debate to come for no reason other than ideological hatred of the other party.

Morris was suggesting this a year ago. Democrats are not going to budge on any proposal to eliminate Medicare, Social Security, or Health Care Reform. Those will impact most Americans and would only take us back to the pre 1960's (pretty much ******ed).

Not only is a government shutdown in their playbook, but so is not raising the debt ceiling. Note that the Democrats never pulled that kind of crap when Bush was president even though they could have. That's because they feel it's more important that the government operates and not shut down and damage the economy.

Ok, you said that Howad Dean suggested that it would be good for them. Here is that clip:

He basically was saying that a shutdown would teach the Teaparty a lesson since a large number of its constituents are dependent on entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare. Although he said that he (personally) would be rooting for that he also said that as a statesman, he wouldn't' do that (plan to shut down the government). That would be irresponsible.
