French authorities have detained Pavel Durov, the French-Russian billionaire who founded the messaging app Telegram, at an airport outside Paris, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV.Officers from France's anti-fraud office, attached to French customs, took him into custody Saturday evening after he arrived at Bourget Airport on a flight from Azerbaijan, BFMTV report. Durov, 39, was wanted under a French arrest warrant due to the lack of moderation on Telegram which led to it being used for money laundering, drug trafficking and sharing pedophilic content, according to BFMTV. According to BFMTV, the Telegram founder had not regularly travelled to France and Europe since the arrest warrant was issued.

The Korea Communications Standards Commission announced on the 29th that it has sent an emergency request for cooperation to the French authorities, who are investigating the CEO of Telegram, regarding responses to Telegram deepfake sex crime videos.

The KCSC explained that this request can be made possible through cooperation with the French investigative authorities, who arrested and detained Telegram CEO Pavel Durov on the 24th and are currently investigating, and the global networks on digital sex crimes.

Good on France for holding Big Tech accountable. Telegram can be pro freedom of speech and privacy all it wants, but not when actual criminal activity is being committed on its platform.
