Discussion: State Rights

I was referring to what you said, not what franklin said. Pay attention
All I said was the Civil War wasn't really a Civil War because it was 2 seperate Nations.

The Civil War of Ideals is meant, we have 2 different Ideologies, and they are in battle for politcal supremacy. It is an accurate statement.

And so is mine that no one has died yet in the civil war of ideology

That is only right if you recognize the Confederacy as an independent nation and not a group of states in rebellion, which was what the Union recognized it as. And since the Confederacy never really received any international recognition it mostly looked as as the states in rebellion part hence the name of the civil war. But this is somewhat of a divergence from the original topic and we should probably get back on track.

when it comes to healthcare, I do believe it should be left to the individual states....

It depends I suppose. Do you think ideals were responsible for the Inquisition? If yes then you have to consider the Bush / Wilson Doctrine and the ideas behind it.

:thing: :doom: :thing:

I stopped reading right here:

Get off the soapbox already, Republicans.

Agreed. If they think pissing and moaning about ACORN is going to help them win elections, then I have a bridge in Alaska I'd be willing to sell them for a low, low price.

That's my bridge:cmad:....a Nigerian bank official just sold that to me for $1.25....that's like 100K in Nigerian money....

The Supreme Court decides what is constitutional and what is not. And considering DC voting rights is a gray area, as far as the Constitution goes, I'm sure the court will be making the final call on this.

my whole issue is that these are American Citizens living in this country....how can any rational person support that they don't have a say in anything?? Prohibition used to be in the Constitution....and look how that worked out

DC also has a population which exceeds several states. If Wyoming can have a Congressman, surely DC can.

Yes, they are American Citizens, but it's the States that get represented, and Washington DC is not a State.

But Congress is the final arbiter of all matters concerning DC, and if Congress decided that it should have representation, then the decision would technically be Constitutional.

So basically you're saying "**** anyone living in DC" and their rights as citizens don't mean ****....would you prefer they get PO Boxes in VA or maryland??

I do not believe a PO box qualifies as a valid address for voter registration in VA.

The point I was making was how can any one American citizen rationally support supressing another American citizens right to representation?

Because if DC got a Representative in Congress, that Representative would be a Democrat.

I always think the D.C. voting rights question is an interesting issue which while may have some "constitutional" arguments just comes down to people not wanting to let other people get a seat. Its not like the country is going to fall apart because suddenly the district gets voting representatives. In the end people want it for the rights and parties want it or don't for the seats they'll gain or not get.

I look at it that way personally...dont even care who would get elected.

It's just further proof that this country is no longer an alliance of Sovereign States, but a Nation of sectional territories.
