What you are saying is a point well taken. That being said, I think that monolith may be a weak point and shrinking. I have a much longer thesis on how the debate may, and needs to, shift to the left, but it has to be grounded in some fundamental principles. There are a few in the democratic party who truly believe in equal access to education, opportunity, political rights, etc. Most don't, and those who do are frowned upon by the establishment, but when compared to what is essentially the monolith (like that word) of the GOP, there may be some potential for political change. I'm not particularly sanguine about the possibility, but it exists.
