It's not so much the practical nature of using arms against the government as much as the fact that it does undoubtedly makes it impossible for the government to infringe upon the populace without the threat of a fight.
If we were to really talk of the practicality of any sort of situation where the citizens would have to fight against the government, I am of the belief that most in the military would side with the citizenry.
