Action-Adventure Disney Talking ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ Reboot With ‘Deadpool’ Scribes Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick

It's too early for a PoTC reboot; the existing films, whilst not exactly new, are still quite fresh. They need to give it more time if they truly want to reboot the franchise. In any case, it's going to be a tough one to beat. One of the things I loved (and still love) about this franchise is that, when it came about, it was fresh, or was original, it was something different from reboots and prequels etc.

And now they're just recycling again. I'm not in any hurry for a rebooted Pirates franchise.

Yeah they broke so many moulds in terms of swashbuckling movies.

  1. The Female lead wasn't just a helpless damsel in distress
  2. The authority/government figure wasn't the most evil man in the movie.
  3. The main hero is usually entirely heroic, (not a title that best fits Captain Jack)

To this day I will never get this leitmotif out of my head.

I’m talking about the kids. I was 14 when I saw the first Pirates. I imagine a 6, 7, 8, 9 year old will grow up with the new rebooted Pirates. A new generation of stories and characters.

With the budgets these films require, they need to be four quadrant and appeal to all audiences. One that appeals just to kids won't make enough money.

The solution to the budget issue is to restart the franchise with a smaller budget. The first one was expensive but it pales in comparison to the later ones.

New, cheaper actors means not spending $35 million on Johnny Depp (alone) and then the other high profile actors.

And yet, the original film was probably the best one for me. It told, and wrapped up a perfectly good story. Had they not gone with sequels, it would have been well remembered as a stand alone film in it's own right.

That's because they didn't know for sure that the original would do well enough to get a sequel, so they focused on telling a mostly complete standalone story. It's a bit like the OG Star Wars film in that regard.

Anyway I'd be fine with this IF they got someone in there who actually cares about the franchise and has an actual vision for it. Also I kind of like the idea of, if they don't bring Depp back, if the "lovable roguish trickster" character was a woman this time. That rarely happens in films.

Ladies are the straight character who chastises and reacts to the wacky lead until they fall for his unorthodox ways. :o

You are missing my point.

Care to elaborate then? We were discussing about it being too soon to reboot because the originals are in recent memory for most moviegoers and it hasn't been long enough to be nostalgic.

You are delusional if you think Disney is going to wait 10-20 years to reboot a popular and successful franchise.

What other sailors myths havent they done yet? They’ve done mermaids and krakens.

Oh my gosh are they going to add The Meg?

Or how about, I don't know, finding a new idea or property to explore?

All Disney seems to want to do lately is reboots and remakes and sequels.

And clearly the audiences are going for it because they make billions of dollars doing it.

Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow to Be Replaced by Female Lead in Pirates Reboot?

It has been rumored that Disney is replacing Johnny Depp with a female actress in their Pirates of the Caribbean reboot. Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese are writing the new project, but a finished script has yet to be turned in. Depp has been in the news a lot lately with accusations of domestic abuse, violence on movie sets, and general erratic behavior, which has more than likely made Disney take pause to reevaluate the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

As for who would be taking over for Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot, it is believed that Redd, the current star of the Disneyland and Disney World ride will take the lead. Redd is the new pirate who took over the controversial wench auction scene, which was recently changed. Redd has been incorporated into the park as well, and has become a popular cast member wandering amongst selfie-hungry tourists. It's pretty clear that Disney has some other plans for Redd that go beyond the ride.

Rebel Wilson is Captain Jacqueline Sparrow. :o

Looking back on the series, I'd say the first one's the best, and the second and third are watchable, because you had Will and Elizabeth to ground the story just enough, especially in the first one. The fourth and fifth film are pretty damn bland unless Geoffey Rush is on screen; he seemed to have a better handle of when to ham it up and when to go subtle than Depp in the last two movies.

The real key is seeing what made the script smart in the first film and keep on going to. Keep most of the the villains and heroes clever, allow danger to be a real thing... And hardest of all, get the characters right. They lucked out on getting Orlando Bloom in the perfect roll for himself, and to the right amount of lucky happenstance to make the character more disarmingly charming (like how the candleholder breaks off in the first film; Bloom accidentally tugged it off, and improvised a brilliant reaction.) You had Depp doing Sparrow in a more supporting role, which honestly fit the character better, since it allowed some ambiguity about his competence and loyalty. And of course, you had future Dame Keira Knightley just blowing people's socks off with her skill. Plus, again, Geoffrey Rush being a pitch perfect villain; Davy Jones may be a better "heavy" with more stunning iconography, but Barbosa was the best foil for Jack.

As to the idea of Redd as the lead... Provided they're smart enough to not fall into the pitfalls that sometimes accompany "girl power" stories, I can see them doing it well if they cast right. Maybe Karen Gillan, combining her skills at comedy with the genuine gravitas she gets out of Nebula?

I think this franchise certainly can be re-booted but for me it’s too soon

Well knowing how Disney likes to remake classics, and the original is about 15yrs old, I wouldn’t be surprised at at remake but this time it’ll be animated!

Why reboot it? Nobody is going to care if Depp's Sparrow isn't in it, and they're even getting tired of Sparrow.

It's played out. Do something new.

Love that idea.
