Animation Disney's 'Moana'

Is there any reason why this seems to be so slow in taking off BO wise? I know the overseas release dates are staggered - not even sure where it has been released yet, but it seems to crawling right now when I expected it to explode.

Moana just had a better 2nd weekend hold when compared to juggernauts like Frozen and Toy Story 2.

China, UK and Japan OW numbers are bad to just okay but the France OW is very good and it 'll have a scattered release all over the world. There are still big OS markets that are yet to release the movie. The BO results in those countries could go either way, I'm hoping for the best.

It will have Sing by Illumination directly competing against it so that will be big hurdle to overcome and post respectable numbers but 2016 has taught us that Pixar/WDAS can coexist with Illumination (Finding Dory & Secret Life of Pets). So very good BO returns is still possible.

It's a good movie, but it's not quite as good as some of Disney Animation's recent efforts. It has good music, but really only two really good catchy numbers.

Also it came out right after some other big releases.

If you look at the numbers the film is doing pretty well. You have to look at it closer to releases like Tangled or Wreck-It Ralph than say Frozen or Zootopia, which are two of Disney Animation's biggest hits in forever.

I see Moana finishing sort of around similar marks as Wreck-It Ralph or Tangled. It will probably end behind Big Hero 6 tho.

Saw this today and I really enjoyed it. It can definitely hold its own against the likes of Tangled and Frozen. It's tough to compare it to Zootopia, but I think when it comes to story, Zootopia wins, so I'll give that a slight edge. The animation in Moana was breathtaking, though. Definitely some of the best CGI animation I've ever seen. Moana was a great heroine as well, but there's no denying Dwayne Johnson stole the show as Maui. "You're Welcome" might be my favorite Disney song this decade. I'm surprised it was as good as it was without having a strong antagonist too. Between that and the absence of any sort of romance subplot, it just goes to show that not all Disney films have to follow the same formula in order to work.

No need to worry about this film's box office. It's still doing well and was No. 1 for a third straight weekend. When you have a film like this, you can enjoy the box office marathon instead of a spring. Disney animated features are very good at not having to be frontloaded like all the other tentpoles that get released in last several years.

Disney will have the luxury of being number one yet again next week with Rogue One.

I loved this movie and think it's the best one to come out of the Second Disney Renaissance so far. I love anything Lin-Manuel Miranda touches. I'm obsessed with Jordan Fisher and Miranda's version of "You're Welcome" on the soundtrack. Does anyone else wish some of the unused tracks made it into the movie? I would have loved to hear Auli'i Cravalho sing "More" and the reprise. "How Far I'll Go" and it's various reframes were powerful and catchy but I wanted her to sing more variety of tracks.

To me the only really memorable songs are You're Welcome and How Far I'll Go. I wish there was a bit more in terms of memorable songs.

I just got back. The music was okay, and maybe they will grow on me. But the only one what really struck me as good during the movie was the crab's song. I thought that was great.

Really enjoyed the movie, though the lack of the adorable piggy was a bit disappointing. The Fury Road reference was fantastic.

If it wasn't for "Let it Go," I would say that Moana easily has better music than Frozen.

And I'm no Frozen hater.

I don't think it is close. Frozen has 5 great songs at least imo. I don't think Moana has any. I saw it with my brother who is big into music, studies it even. He mentioned the problem was the Polynesian style doesn't really match up with trying to convey English vocals or the usual pop style of Disney. So it clashed. Thinking about it, he is probably right.

Not to say I hated the music, I didn't. But it did feel forced.

Easily. I mean Fixer Upper is pretty terrible. And Let It Go, despite how it blew up, isn't all that great.

I'm actually obsessed with the opening number.

We weave our nets from the fibers
The water is sweet inside
We use the leaves to build fires
We cook up the meat inside

:')

I'd say, if you're even remotely interested in seeing Frozen, lower your expectations a lot.

As someone who loves that movie, I can agree that it's been overhyped to oblivion.

Is this a bomb? Wikipedia says the budget was $150 and it's only made about $330 so far. If you consider the 2x rule for movies to make a profit, it doesn't seem like a hit.

I dont think its a bomb but it is going a lot slower than i thought it would

I think metrics are a bit different for Disney movies. Especially with merchandise involved.
