Animation Disney's 'Moana'

Edit: probably shouldn't open that can of worms.

Either way, I wish this was making more money. It aas better than Frozen.

The film's box-office run hasn't ended yet. And it was never going to be some billion-dollar grosser. I'm not saying that the numbers aren't disappointing internationally, domestically it's right on target for 200-plus million which is about what can be expected for a non break out Disney movie, because they look like they are going to be. It's not some Good Dinosaur level situation.

It's going to do well over $200 million domestic. So it will be fine. It had a lower budget than Wreck-It Ralph and Tangled.

Is this a bomb? Wikipedia says the budget was $150 and it's only made about $330 so far. If you consider the 2x rule for movies to make a profit, it doesn't seem like a hit.

It has a quite staggered OS release and hasn't been release in Disney musical animation's main markets like South Korea and Japan (where it should comfortably make well more than 100M). It hasn't been released in Australia either.

Anyway I think it's safe to say it will make 215M+ DOM and 550M+ worldwide, which will bring a healthy profit to Disney even before merchandising. NO ONE can say that it's a bomb, and the only people who say that it's "disappointing" are the one who expect it to be another Frozen (which it should NOT be expected to be).

It might get a bit of an Oscar push too. "How Far I'll Go" is almost surely going to be nominated for Best Song and it has a pretty good shot at Best Animated Feature as well.

Finally saw this yesterday, absolutely :hrt:LOVED:hrt: it. I loved Frozen, but I love this a lot more....and I've been loving the soundtrack ever since it was released, so seeing all the songs in context just added to my enjoyment of those songs.

The US box office is probably done. It's been out over a month. It will get over $200M domestic, but barely.

It's over 190m after a nearly 5m Tuesday, it will be well past $200m this weekend. There is no new competition at all, not even a single new wide release this weekend.
I'd say it ends in the 240-250 range, maybe a bit higher if it's legs hold out.

I've seen this twice now and loved it more on the second viewing, not that I didn't already like it on the first. I love this movie more than Frozen but the songs are better in Frozen. I hope to see this one last time this week.

Not sure about $250 million, but definitely over $200 million domestic.

Oh man, was this worth the wait. I think this might be my favourite female lead Disney movie in quite some time. Moana might very well be the best written and most well rounded Disney princess to date, she has a determination and enthusiasm, but she also shows vulnerability and her weaknesses. Maui is basically The Rock in animated form, the character is tailor made for him. The music is pretty good for the most part. Frozen really only had one song that was memorable, Rapunzel had a lot of serviceable songs but nothing outstanding, this as at least 3 really good songs and a score that compliment the environment. I'll go so far to say it's the best Disney music since Lion King. This is a solid 8/10 movie. Not sure it beats Zootopia for best animated movie this year, but it's certainly up there. Disney's second renaissance continues.

And now we wait one Disney-less year for Wreck-It Ralph 2.

Pixar will fill the void until then. :)

True. Very interested in Coco, and the sudden shift in tone for Cars 3 has me...intrigued.

Freaking finally managed to watch it... stupid delayed release dates. :argh: The reviewers were right, the story is indeed somewhat predictable, but the characters are so good (Moana is definitely top #3 Disney princesses material, in my opinion) and the movie as a whole so enjoyable that honestly, who cares?

It's just kind of shame that the film isn't doing better at the box office.

Yep, still thinking about this hours later and the music is stuck in my head. I'll have to watch it again but I think this might very well be Disney's best princess movie.

 If it follows Toy Story 2 or Tangled then it should make another 30M At Least; its weekdays in 4th week are identical to its weekdays on 1st week, and its 5th Tuesday is its biggest Tuesday. It might not mean much for you since you said the box office run is "done" but I think that another 35M is quite significant for a movie that gross 230M total. And I don't think 230M is "barely" over 200M but anyway it's your opinion.

Wed numbers are up for Moana:

Moana (DIS), 2,687 Theaters (-803) / $4.4M (-8%) Wed. /Total: $194.9M/Wk 5

It will be within spitting distance of $200m after today and should have a fairly hefty weekend since there are no new openers.

So much for "barely" making $200m.:cwink:

Roughly 4.2m on Thursday putting the total at $199,059,039heading into the weekend.

Just saw it today and absolutely adored it. I think I actually liked it more than frozen.

Moana is such an amazing protagonist, I can't wait to introduce her to my niece. They have so much in common (my niece also loves looking after chickens). Her grandma almost made me cry a couple of times.

I feel like this is the little mermaid remake we always secretly wanted. Ironically I always imagined the rock appearing as a live action king triton

Just saw Moana this week, and I have to say I wish I went to see it sooner! What a great movie! Moana is simply beautiful, both in how she was written and how she was made. Plenty of fun action and adventure with Maui and some great musical scores. I've been listening to them on youtube ever since. And I loved the ending, as in how Moana 'bested' Te Ka.
Disney has been doing pretty good with the last few movies and slightly unconventional endings. And I think that may be because they seem to be moving away from the strictly good/evil story lines.

The one thing I wish though was that the songs were longer! Dang they were (for the most part) awesome, especially the beat and rythm of 'We Know the Way' and 'I am Moana.' Those should be twice as long.

As for comparing to other movies like Frozen, Tangled or Zootopia, I tend not to. They are all on my shelf and will be rewatched with equal pleasure.:woot:

This would make an amazing video game actually. Being able to play as Moana with her water bending powers and as Maui with a few transformations banjo kazooie style (let's say eagle, shark and crab for those hard to reach places) would be so epic

My earlier estimate of Moana ending in the 240-250m range is looking good after another $5.38m for the 4 day weekend giving it $232.69M

After a $2.425m weekend Moana is now in that 240-250m range I had pegged with $240,115,596.

$
250m looks out of range at this point, but it could crawl past $245m
