Do you accept the theory of evolution? - Part 1

Dumb question perhaps, but how do you know he even exists?
Because of everything I can see, smell, touch and hear. That's where faith comes into play. Like I said, there's nothing complex about it. He said everything into existance and it just 'is'.

That would be my worst nightmare.

We are apes, not ostriches.

99% of the time I love my curiosity and inquisitive nature, but that other 1% time I would love to be able to just shut my brain off and look around and actually see the thing instead of its mechanics. I really can't look at something without wondering how it works. Sometimes I feel like I'm missing the tranquility of not wondering. You get what I'm saying? Sometimes I would like to be able to set down and just be content with just being.

Possibly. But I wouldn't call that tranquility. I would call that mediocrity.

I could point out how we can explain everything you see, smell, touch or hear.

But I'm fairly certain that wouldn't make a difference.

I'm of two minds. I was raised in church, and have always had a spiritual side. I n o longer call myself a christian and I am no longer religious. I do still have my spiritual side tho. Pagan may be a better word. I've always felt there is more than the physical. Something beyond what our senses perceive. Just on the edge of perception. On the other hand, I'm a scientist. Not professionally, but intellectually. I want to understand things and question and learn and learn and learn and learn. Problem is I've never been able to reconcile the two sides of me. Most of the times I'm scientifically factually minded. Other times I just wanna relax my mind and take in the world.

I'm curious and inquisitive too, just not about the same things. I'm a normal guy just like you are. I'm not a prude that stays couped up in my house, reading the Bible all the time, lol.

Living in a religious country, it's quite sad people refuse to question their beliefs. Maybe because out of fear they won't fall in line with customs. Not because I want them to become atheists, but because opening their minds would give them a better view of the world. Just like my mother. She's got extreme views on Islam, and often makes generalizations.

What I would suggest, is that you read about evolution. Or simply watch a good lecture on it on youtube.

Never dismiss a concept before you fully understand it.

When I say I'm curious and inquisitive I mean borderline neurotic level. Remember in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes when Watson shows up and Holmes is in a dark room shut off doing his own thing. Watson opens the blind and Sherlock screams and he is all disheveled. Its the scene where he asks "Is it poison nany?" That is me on some days. I get my mind on something a problem or a question and I turn into a recluse and my friends wont hear from me for weeks. When I was younger I actually went to therapy over it and my OCD.

Which country do you live in?

I am many things. But I am not normal (for better or worse).

Nah, that's OK. Thank you for the suggestion though. I've been around a long time and have seen and heard theories on evolution, but it's just not what I believe in. Just like you don't believe in God (at least that's what I assume from reading the few posts that I have read of yours) and nothing that you watch or listen to would ever change your mind. Know what I mean? It kind of works both ways.

Yeah, I don't go quite that far with my inquisitions and curiosity. :funny:

Its not the same tho. Evolution has over one hundred years of experimentation, facts, and data to credit it. Not to mention geology, atsronomy, physics, biology, chemistry to back it up. Belief really is irrelevent at that point. Take me for example, I couldn't ignore the fact of evolution more than I could ignore gravity or the speed of light or general relativity. There comes a point where you see so much evidence and data that you'd have to lobotomize yourself to ignore it.

I do believe in evolution, but from what I've seen, I like your attitude

I could think of a few scenarios where my atheism might be challenged...

Suit yourself. But you've already shown you don't understand evolution (the monkeys question). Seems rather premature to rule it out without even attempting understand it.

Just because I don't have the same beliefs that you guys do, doesn't make me any less of a man/human being. That's also the beauty of humans, we are different in many ways. It would be a boring place if we were all EXACTLY the same.

Lol, Im a bit eccentric. Oh, and like Schloss said, you've got a great attitude about all this. While I may not be able to relate to your view I admire your sound acceptance of it. Wrong or right, I admire a person who can be content in their views and beliefs.

I was talking about being civil and friendly instead of condescending while disagreeing with people. Something this thread doesn't see much of. It was kind of refreshing.

It just makes you in self-denial about your own nature, and the origin of your species.

I was actually about to say the same thing!

Not everyone needs to fully understand their nature. I would say its more important for some to be content than to be right. Peace of mind is an important thing. If a person has that they can rest easy.

Hey, is there a philosphy thread on these boards?

I don't even know what I believe most of the time.

I believe in evolution. I know what my political beliefs are.

But beyond that, idk. I consider myself an agnostic these days.

Assuming you have a cortex, yes you do.

Some people just settle.

Yea, that's part of my issue with Star Trek. Every alien species happens to look exactly like a human with a prosthetic nose and some forehead ridges.
