I do, some don't, lets settle it, and clear thread space in what has turned to be around 3 threads talking about weather it is epic or not...what is the general opinion of SHH?

*sigh*

As I stated in the previous thread. The first movie isn't epic and wasn't meant to be epic. It was a summer movie by Disney struggling to have a hit. It's a thrill ride, summer afternoon blockbuster that you can take your family to. Obviously the only reason sequels were made was because the first did very well at the box office.

Fast forward a few years later, Disney decides to make 2 sequels back to back. DMC is a set up, there's no real big payoff and also they really up the comedy in this one. Critics and fans alike seem to agree that the 1st was superior to it.

Now you have AWE coming. Does the trailer make the movie seem epic? Possibly. I still haven't seen it yet. But even if it is, it doesn't automatically make up for the 2 previous ones not being so. That's my 2 cents.

The OT sure as hell didn't make the mess of a PT epic.

anyone remember when the first one came out the critics panned the heck out of it and said that Depp and Rush were the only good things in it? and then once they found out the public loved it they changed there mind.

No big payoff?

So...DMC putting all the peices in place for possibley the best sea born battle we have ever seen (I said possibley, nothing is certian, but much like SM3 we don't know how the final fight is gunna turn out, but the way the trailer makes the rest of the movie look, assumptions can be made)

I think it is a big payoff; Ted and Terry (the writers) put a lot of emphasis on the structer of DMC, everything is formulaic, it is ment to pay off in the end...Norrington finding the Pearl, and then the heart, Will finding his father, Tia ressurecting Barbossa, Govener Swann, and DJ becomeing under Becketts control, Will seeing Elizabeth make out with Jack, Jack losing his life, basically if we are reading the book of Pirates we have just read past chapter 20 of a 35 chapter book, the turn of the book (i.e. Jack being sent to his grave) we still have the rising action, and climax of this book left...imo its setting up for a big payoff

So you are saying the big payoff is in AWE which is pretty much why I said there was no big payoff in DMC. But that's not what this thread is about is it?

I think once you get three out there you can have your self a decent Saga to were a prequel setting likely will be done. Pirates 1 Boarder line epic. Pirates 2 Good enough to be one. But i think AWE will be definately and Epic.

Actually once you put 2 and 3 together i think you could consider that one film and epic. Ask your selves this is Pirates in your hearts any less an epic then Rings. This being asked to the true fans.

right, but DMC wasn't about the payoff, it was about the setup

And we come back to what I originally said that DMC had no big payoff.

This thread will not be pretty

I think it is nessecary though

There is too much "it is epic" from folks like me who love the movies, and too much "it isn't epic" from the people who don't like em

weather or not this proves anything remains to be seen, but i think a more concrete answer to what a majority of people view it as

someone probably Erz said it is mearly escapesim, and I say why can't it be an escapest epic? I think that works, and don't see why it wouldn't

cause star wars can be viewed as nothing more than escapeism

Some would say the stench left from the 2nd film was pretty epic.

In my opinion I do not think so. Because it is in the end an opinion & it is not the end of the world if the entire human population of earth does not agree with you that Pirates of the Caribbean are not an epic movies.

I never said it was

As someone else said, the first one, not really, but the 2nd and especially the 3rd, yes.

Would you say that the continuation of it makes it more epic, or the general sense of this monsterous quest with mythical characters?

Cause I can see how I would agree that the second is what makes them epic

'Epic' is defined in terms of the scale and scope of events taking place in the film. The first POTC may not necessarily be 'epic', but the second and third most definitely are.

Neither of the first two are epics, just swashbuckling adventures.

The third one does look epic though.

The first, no.

The second tried to be more epic than it was, and the third SHOULD be more epic, boosting the triligy into epic proportions.

Remember, not all great triligies need to be epic. Back to the Future is superior, bot still not epic.

Look at the poll and some of the responses above me. They state that the first 2 are not epic, yet they still voted "epic" because of the trailer of the 3rd one. The trailer. Doesn't really make a lot of sense to me.

In the end, is the result of this going to change how you feel about the movies? If you enjoy these movies, what does it matter what other people think? Unless, you need some sort of validation?

the first and second movies were in no way epic, but the third looks like it might be... but people thinking an epic third movie will make the whole trilogy epic are very mistaken. it doesn't work that way.

too many kids today think lots of cgi and classical music makes something epic.

anytime there are multiple locations across vast distances and main characters that go against unimaginable odds i consider it epic.
