I think it only encourages more begging so I don't give them squat.
That'll only encourage more nut-sweating.Ongie said:More often than not I give beggers a chin-ful of nut sweat and a sore throat.
Sometimes I'll toss them a dime for their trouble.

I'm pretty jaded about them and am pretty much of the opinion that if they have the time, ability and energy to walk around asking people for money then they should be perfectly capable of putting those efforts into a steady job. And, for those who have truly fallen on hard times, there are assistance programs available to them and if they really want to work their way out of where they've landed then they can and will, using hard work and the programs that are available to them. So many of them, though, have chosen to live like that and continue to do so for no other reason than that's what they want to do with their lives and I'm not going to support that with my own finances. Besides, I pay my taxes in part so that they do have help available to them when they truly need it. I also contribute to several charities every year that provide aid for the homeless as well to help them get clothes, shelter, and find ways to get back on their feet. I don't believe in free rides and just giving beggars change amounts to that, particularly when so many of them have severe alcohol abuse issues that they wind up spending that money on anyway. They own the responsibility of getting their sh1t straight and should be taking an active role in that as far as I'm concerned, rather than expecting others (total strangers, no less) to just take care of them.
