Do you like Batman: Mask of the Phantasm?

MOTP has amazing animation, the best for any animated major film to come out in the theaters ever to include a comic book character.

mask of the phantasm shows how bruce lost his ability to keep in touch with others but how he still had his humanity.

The film showed he had two chances for redemption and was willing to give it up for andrea in the past and again in the present but how she denied him twice.

It shows why the character became dark and alone.

The pause he gives before he puts on his mask is the single greatest moment in any animation.

I can't stress enough how hard it must be for bruce to lose his parents but to lose his himself twice.

From going to not talking at a gravestone to begging his parents to not become batman.

I could honestly spend the rest of my days defending that piece of work.

The only thing it lacked was a proper fight between bats and the phantasm.

Oh and shirley walker's music is the definitive batman soundtrack, she nailed the whole feeling of the movie. No batman film can come close, and neither can no batman onscreen relationship.

She was his soulmate, his complete opposite and equal, his road to both happiness and complete dispair.

Valid points, but atleast MOTP Batman didn't spend half the movie telling everyone he doesn't kill people only to do exactly that to a major villain and former friend at the end. And don't give me "collateral damage" excuses. Batman pushed him off edge to death = killed him. That's my biggest gripe about TDK and what knocked it out of the lead for best Batman movie for me.
...Are you saying that it would have been more heroic for Batman to let Harvey kill the kid?

to be fair, he did nearly let two face kill harvey

over the edge yes, but not to his death.

remember joker went over the edge earlier as well.

bats pretty much used both of two faces heads to break his fall.

That's arguable...mainly due to this:

Personally I WOULD side with "Phantasm" ... but 'Akira' is nothing to sneeze at in terms of animation.

He made no mention of talking about 'American' Comics...he said Comic Books period.

Major film based on comic books that was released in theatres...'Akira' was all of these things as well.

And the 'Akira' film IS anime...but it's based on Manga. Japanese, American, whatever...both projects are based on 'Comic Books.'

And as a Batman fan I love "Phantasm" way more and do feel it's animation tops a great deal of what was done on "Batman: The Animated Series" on Television.

But "Akira" was revolutionary in terms of animation...period. Revolutionary enough to transcend global borders.

But I get what he meant...just pointing out the need to be more specific.

What do you mean? You want it to look like X-Men TAS with clunky anatomy? That's detailed to you right?

And I don't see why everyone is saying the animation wasn't better than an ordinary episode. Hello? Cat Scratch Fever? Tyger, Tyger? Eternal Youth? There were so many terribly animated TAS episodes (at least a good 1/2 of the original batch--not TNBA). The animation in MOTP was stellar. It was done by Dong Yang and Spectrum (the two best overseas animation houses) and was even nominated for an Annie.

MOTP's animation cannot be justified as bad.

No, I'm talking detailed in terms of the lion king, Tarzan, Aladdin, or Beauty and the Beast, all of which had far superior animation to MOTP. Movies that have very fluid animation, yet don't have to resort to the very clunky figures of TAS, which I've never been a big fan of.

Now, MOTP animation wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. Yes, it was better then some of the individual episodes of TAS, but overall, it was about the same quality of many of their episodes to me. Had they been able to have something on par with some of the disney movies I mentioned, I would have been more impressed.

However, this doesn't mean I think MOTP is a bad movie, it's still up there as one of my favorite Batman films.

I like the story, the atmosphere and the music but I don't like Dana Delany's (Andrea Beaumont's) voice.:ikyn Also I don't like the fact that Mask of the Phantasm was given the barebones treatment. Meaning they just converted Batman: Mask of the Phantasm to DVD without special features...I mean how hard is it for them to transfer the HBO First Look of Mask of the Phantasm onto DVD?

Yes. It was the best batman movie after BB, TDK.

That's probably the best shot in the whole film. I love that whole little scene and the "My god" from Alfred is the icing on the cake.

I saw MOTP during it's opening weekend(and from the box office returns, i'm probably one of the ONLY people here who did) and I thought it was an masterpiece. The animation, the voice work, the score(Shirley Walker deserved SOME kind of reward for her work there. Breathtaking.). It has it's problems but overall, it's an great film and it's in my top 20 films of all time.

Yep it's still my favorite Batman movie. The only Batman movie ever to come close in challenging its position is the dark knight...And MotP is still my favorite. TDK is second.

Side it? "Akira" is infinitely better in terms of animation. MotP, as good as it could be as a film, is barely better than the average BTAS episode in terms of animation.

"Do you like Batman: Mask of the Phantasm?"

Brilliant story, great animation, fun, fantastic voice work...

Yeah, I like it.

I haven't watxhed it IN A LONG TIME

I used to own this a kid, it broke in middle of the movie :hehe:

i must disagree..... i saw it 3 times opening day!!:hehe:very proud of that! but yeah, the most iconic shot to represent bats was this frame right here! and Shirley got recognition every time Hans or Danny let her conduct their work.... rest her soul. as a film score maniac, i know... Hans plays the organ stinger as Buzz was being hunted. memory serves me right, Danny asked her to control the music for the animated series. as Bat-Fans, we must make sure she will be remembered, long after we leave this side of the Earth.
