I was deployed in Afghanistan back in 2001 and we were living in tents back then. Well, there are these things called camel spiders that many people are afraid of..they are not very friendly and can be quite aggressive if you are not lucky.

Anyway, one of my friends was scared to death of deploying...not because of the risk to his life from the enemy...but because he's heard of camel spiders. This guy watched Arachnophobia when he was young and was forever traumatized. So he was NOT looking forward to seeing one and would most likely cry like a little girl if he did.

So we've been there for about a month or so and they established a little gift shop where we could buy locally made gifts and whatnot. They sold decorative knives, rugs, shirts and frames...with HUGE spiders in them. They were huge dead tarantulas mounted in a frame. They would serve our purpose just fine.

That night, our arachnophobic friend was asleep...on the top bunk (aha...it IS related to the topic) and we decided to give him a little wake up call. So we took the dead tarantula out of the frame, placed it on his chest and started tickling his nose with a piece of thread. He woke up enough to open his eyes and shake the annoyance off his nose...and saw it.

I've never seen a human being jump so high. He jumped from a lying down position to nearly the top of the tent. Now bear in mind that these tents are huge, made to fit maybe 20 or so people in them at once. While we didn't have air conditioning in them (yet) there are these vent tubes that run along the ceiling made for the a/c air to be distributed along the length of the tent. Well, he grabbed onto one of those in his descent back to the earth...and nearly brought down the whole tent. He hit the ground, sprained his ankle and busted his face on the corner of another bunk. That put him out of commission for a few days due to his sprained ankle and he wound up looking like he went a round or two with Rocky.

Moral of the story; if you are deathly afraid of spiders, are in a situation where you'll have to sleep in the same room with your friends and said friends are jackasses with access to dead tarantulas...choose the bottom bunk.

Anyway when i was a kid i had my bunk bed collapse while i was on top and my brother was on the bottom bunk , I somehow wound up underneath both matresses and had to be dug out by my father. bunks are scary .
