I love the idea and the medieval look it gives the sabre, but I do wish they'd redesign the guard so it wouldn't get chopped off the moment it got hit. New Lightsabre effect is brilliant too.

The more I think about it, the more I think it shouldn't really be an issue. Because if someone is able to cut the sides off, they should also be able to cut off the tip of a regular Lightsaber. And I don't think I've ever seen that happen.

Right on

Some people like it, some people hate it. How do you feel about the new lightsaber in Star Wars: The Force Awakens?

No. Don't like it. At least as of yet. Maybe I need to wait and see it in action. Just seems it was just a constructive effort to be different. It doesn't compete with Darth Mauls bad ass dual spear style saber.

A little embarrassed to admit that I've pulled a complete 180 on it. I thought it was the dumbest thing in the world yesterday morning and now the more I look at it the more I love it. It feels very mystical and mysterious. And badass. :p

And if the hilt is made out of a lightsaber resistant metal, it's a non-issue. Also, if anyone asks "Then why not make the entire crossguard out of that metal?" It's simple: Why not make part of the crossgaurd an effective weapon as well as a defensive component?

Wow...that is a little embarrassing. A total and complete 180!

I think that's exactly what they are trying to reference or one-up even. Two-blades? how about 3 blades!

I don't think it works nearly as well though. Looks much more forced than the change we got with the double blades, which actually looked functional.

I'm trying to look closly at the shot, but I can't quiet tell, since part of his cloack obscures both his hand and his belt for most of it, but - Is he holing his hilt as he's walking, then ignites it? Or is it on his belt (the back of his belt even, which is another thing we've never seen before) and then grabs it and ignites it? I'm leaning toward the latter.

The double bladed lightsaber is far from functional. Very far from it. What they did is created a more ancient looking lightsaber, not just the extra vents to the side (cross guards were used in ancient weapons) but the style of the lightsaber it self is different in terms of it's core, seems very unstable.

But again, double bladed is just...actually more impractical than a cross guard with how easy a lightsaber blade cuts through things.

I always loved the visual, but yeah, the saberstaff makes no sense for a duel. Attacking fodder? Yeah, great, but not in a duel.

I still want to see a long handled saber. It makes the most sense for all types of combat, and could lead to a very cool duel.

Actually my first question would be why not just make gloves out of it? Or an entire suit of armour?

Easiest way to explain that, the metal is rare and not enough available to make armor. Maybe it's extremely rigid and would be hard to make something like gloves with many articulation points. Also, making a cross guard serves multiple points; protection of the hand and your weapon, as opposed to gloves, which only protects your hand.

Also, I don't think we need too much explanation with this stuff given that a lightsaber is an extremely unpractical weapon to begin with, and only justified in being used by saying the users need the force to weild it safely.

I think that's the point really to be different and standout. Enough with the same ol' same ol'. As cool as Darth Mauls double saber was it still had the same blade type, this is better imo, it has that fiery look. As others have stated on various boards, it has that medieval feel too it. So, whoever is wielding that saber knows how to use it, and I'm sure his fighting style replicates the style of those time periods.

Nothing embarrassing about changing your mind, it's only natural.

I hope we get to use him outright murder people, without being too fancy about it.

I like it. It's not a particularly radical redesign of a lightsaber, seems like such a trivial thing for people to get so worked up about.

i thought it looked unnecessary when i first saw the concept art, but in action it looks cool as balls. it'll be interesting if the wielder takes after a more longsword style of fighting as opposed to that baton twirling of the prequels.

I think some might be used to the twirling, spinning, acrobatic light saber swinging and might have a natural distaste for this. I see this light saber as more of a methodical two handed weapon. No issues for me (yet).
