I think some might be used to the twirling, spinning, acrobatic light saber swinging and might have a natural distaste for this.

we've seen 3 movies with baton twirling and one scene in a teaser trailer with this one. talk about jumping the blaster.

The question is will the 3 blades have any purpose outside of style. I doubt it, but if they did, I would hope it would be that, as an older light saber (presumably) that the side blades are more exhaust vents that keep the blade at a steady pressure so it doesn't expand and become to long to be used as a sword. (The energy of the blade looks more like a gas, and less self contained this time around. So maybe whatever they use to contain the blades now weren't invented when this guy made his blade.) if something like this is the case it would be interesting to have him turn off the vents and use it as a spear, or low tech blaster in key sequences.

Who is you know who? If you are talking about Luke, no. I expect Luke to destroy him if they fight. This could lead to the cyborg look.

I do as well. As I've said before, having a crossguard actually opens up some offensive capabilities.

Impracticality aside, I love it simply for the aesthetic value and "badass" element. When he breaks out that lightsaber it was ALREADY awesome because of how it sounded and how cool it looks (more visceral and less like a clean, red light bulb) but then the cross guards came out and I was like "OOOOOO SH**!!!" I definitely dig it and can't wait to see more of it.

Well I, personally, got tired of seeing the plasma from the lightsabers pretty much looking the same except different colors. By RotS they all looked very clean. Just a white bar with a blue, green, purple, or red hue surrounding it. This new lightsaber, however, actually LOOKS dangerous! It actually looks like plasma or a laser, very electric and almost fiery. The LIGHT part of the lightsaber looks different than anything we've gotten from the previous movies. Also...I didn't think lightsabers could sound anymore bad@$$ than they already do but J.J. found a way. I really FELT that thing activate!

I'd prefer that to the dumbass tonfas they had. They really did start to get out of hand with all the "light" weapons. Next thing they'll have ****ing light brooms and light toilet bowl wands.

Maybe they can invent some sort of "light brass knuckles" I bet those could be useful in a fight.t:

Actually looking at the lightsaber, at first I wasn;t sure of the crossguard but now I like it. What like more though is the new look of the energy and the sound I love the almost unstable tendrils of energy emanating from the blades. I wouldn't even mind if all the lightsabers looked like this from now on. I just love the texture and life it adds to the blade instead of the glowing bulb static look.

EXACTLY superkong! I love that they gave the plasma portion of the lightsaber texture. I might not want a well-crafted lightsaber to look that unstable (I still want some texture and not some solid glowing bar)...but I LOVE that this Sith's lightsaber actually looks dangerous.

I think that unstable look should be unique to that Lightsaber. That is, if it's an ancient one, like I hope it is.

The broad-saber (that's what I'm calling it) SFX seems to be evoking the illustrated versions of the lightsaber seen before EMPIRE sort of formalized how they looked through the rest of the films. When you look at posters, comics and the strip, the sabers in those works had a more "flaming" aspect if you will.

It seems like a broad sword when you look at the stills. In the video it seemed strange. I guess the lightsaber hilt will be used for blocking. A broadsword style with a lightsaber wouldn't work if the hilt was all metal since the lightsaber would cut right through. With the lightsaber hilt, now it can block better.

Yup. I've been saying this for years. I hope the rest of the lightsabers look and sound as they did throughout the OT and a few TPM style ones, with all those variations. And Luke's green one should be exactly as it was in RotJ. Let this supposed "ancient saber" be unique to itself.

I didn't like it at first but it's grown on me. Ultimately how it's used is what will determine my opinion. Like Darth Maul's dual-blade, alone it's cool but what made it really badass was how Maul fought with it. I'm more intrigued by the aesthetic of the blade itself appearing to be a pulsating plasma flame rather than a glowing neon tube as Lightsabers have always been depicted, and if that is the case for all the Lightsabers in this new trilogy or just this Sith Lords.

I don't see this guy being the fancy type at least far as jumping around and doing flips and stuff. I think or least hoping he'll have some slick sword play and maybe a few tricks while fighting.

It looks like a claymore sword, I'm fine with the medieval look, it gives a sinister feel and Sith likes fancy saber.
