I love the new lightsaber. My initial reaction was of me totally nerding out over it. I come to the forums, and I see people talking about the functionality, wondering if they know Nolan isn't directing this movie.
When did Star Wars become "grounded and realistic"? Why are people now wondering about functionality in a scifi-fantasy movie? If you don't like the overall aesthetic, I get that, and that's your opinion on the matter. But if you're talking about the functionality of a completely made up fantastical weapon, then you need to get outta town with that ****.

Yeah. I mean, lightsabers aren't functional to begin with. The risks of carrying around a giant laser sword that could hack off one of your limbs if you make one wrong movie is ridiculous, especially since there are laser guns everywhere that can kill your enemy from 200 yards away and pose a much lesser risk to the person using them.
There's no reason for these films to be grounded and realistic, because SW has never been that. They just need to be GOOD.
I like the crossguard, but I feel like a simple fix like this:

would keep the aesthetic while being more obviously functional without all these excuses.

And the only viable reason to spin in a swordfight is if you're trying to die.
