I've noticed upon rewatching many 80's action films that they seem a lot more violent and gorey than movies of today. Most of them have a higher body count than today's horror movies.
Do you think that movies have gone in the right direction by toning it down?
Or do you miss the no holds barred movies of twenty years ago?

Yes I do miss the over the top action movies & horror movies of the 80's & 90's, those were 2 great decades for both genres. I would watch those movies anytime over the films of today.

Thank the movie gods for Paul Verhoeven(Robocop, Total Recall) and John McTiernan (Die Hard, Predator).

Honestly, as far as horror movies go, I'm glad they've started to tone down violence and gore and stuff.

Not that I havea weak stomach or anything, but gratuitous gore is just unnecessary, and in the end it's not all that scary. In the end, I'd prefer that the camera merely implies a horrible and gruesome death rather than show it to me on the big screen, because in the end what you imagine is a hell of a lot scarier than what the director can show you.

Exactly my thoughts.

I rather liked Walter Hill's tone in his 48 hours movies

A little mindless violence is cool every now and then. Not something I'd pay to go see, though (for the most part).

I agree 100%.

I'll give you the simple answer: Yes. I love lots of gore and blood and violence. Thank goodness for asian horror films.

I agree for some horror movies but not all.

I like the stereotypical horror in movies that started stereotypically. Nowadays I feel that Hollywood saw that people like B-Horror movies and decided to make a buckand give us some rehashed crap to make it seem more scary by getting rid of "unnecessary" gore because the audience can "imagine" worse than what would be shown.

The way I see it, if you want to imagine something scary, go read a book, you go to movies to watch what happens, not imagine what happens.

In retrospect, films like Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Predator, The Terminator, First Blood, Robocop etc. were over the top (in some aspects) yet showcased a high level of good writing and exquisite film making.

To this day, those films stand the test of time. I don't necessarily miss the violence of the 80's action film, however I do miss the great storytelling and unforgettable characters that seem to have come from that time period of movie making.

I won't lie! Sometimes I'm in the mood for some over-the-top nonsense!

Which is exactly why i love such movies like Commando.

Its just fun somtimes to see over-the-top action hero's like Arnie kick ass and take names.

I would love a bit of the old " Ultra Violence " Droogie.

i just saw Children of Men and the violence is not glorified but the body count does reach up there with the best of them. and no, i don't miss the gore and violence of the 80's and 90's movies cos the violence didn't go anywhere aside from straight to video/dvd.

fact is that hte only reason why there is no violence is because of the ratings. they make the movis now for kids. more people means more money.

Yeah...I guess. :csad: But, we could always use an over-the-top action flick just to have a little fun at the movies.

i hear you there bring back the ninja movies:ninja:

I miss being left in awe by a movie, but that's has to do more with my lost inocence then the 80's and 90's per se. :) I do believe that we have some movies from that period that are truly classics, but in general, I don't think that comercial movies have gotten worse or better over the years. They are just different. I'm sure that people in the 90's often thought: "man, in the 60's and the 70's they made some awsome action flicks".
:)
On the other hand I LOVE The Punisher (new version)specifically because it feels like a retro action movie, from the 80's. I guess what I like about them is that back then you didn't have to worry about CGI. not that CGI doesn't deserve it's share of credit, since it's the reason why we can tell so many new stories (like comic book movies and such) but there's just something appealing and charming in a way about doing an action movie today that is all stunts, all fake gooey blood instead of CGI blood. :)

In terms of the violence and gore, too many movies try to tone that down so they can get a PG-13 rating and increase the box office.

As far as writing, I'm sure a lot of little moments that would help flesh out the story are left on the cutting room floor to keep the time down, get more audiences in and out of the theatre, so they can increase the box office.
