Is he overrated? No..not at all.

Despite all the Titanic hate, I loved it when I was younger and I still enjoy it today.

And....do I really need to express my love for Terminator and Terminator 2?

Maybe just for Titanic but as a whole, no way. Both of the first two Terminators, Aliens and True Lies are incredible movies and are easily some of my favorites. The original Terminator is possibly my favorite film ever.

Well seeing as

The Abyss is one of my all time favorites.

Aliens basically introduced space marines to the general public (making things like Halo a possibility)

and T1 and T2 and True Lies are three of my favorite Arny movies (tied with Predator of course)

and Titanic made more money than Creossus. (Or however you spell his name)

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say No, he's not overrated.
In fact, I think he's underrated. The man is gold, all of his movies are fun to watch, he is a consistent money maker, and you can always count on him to make something good.

David Warner is the best. He was awesome in Tron and also a great Jack the ripper in Time after time.

I like the part where he punches Leo in the stomach and says "Compliments of Mr. Caledon Hockley". Makes me laugh.

gwynplaine, bro, as a man of tastes you just NEED to see Sam Peckinpah's The Ballad of Cable Hogue, which is my favourite from him in which David Warner proves that he is, once again, a God among men.

(Cameron ? Over-rated ? Hell no, I hate Trues Lies but the man is a genius. and that's a fact)

Will do, man. I love Jason Robards and I've been meaning to watch that movie for a long time (and of course I love Peckinpah too, I highly recommend Ride the high country if you haven't already seen it, one of my favourite westerns). Thanks for pointing me in the right direction:up:.

I'm sure it's mentioned in this thread but i'll say it .
Every time someone or something gets "too much" praise , he /she/it automatically becomes overrated.
We all have our opinions..at times we will agree on something/someone or not. For example Blade Runner is considered to be a SCI-FI classic. However there will always be a small group of people that can't or won't understand what the big fuss is about.

However i think it is important to see the quality of someone or something.
In the case of james Cameron , he is one of the very few filmmakers who is able to combine (SCI-FI) action with a story. The Abyss is a fine example of that. He gets excellent performances out of his actors ( Arnold , Linda Hamilton) and he's always been at the front of filmmaking technology.
WHy else would filmmakers like Spielberg , Peter Jackson , David Fincher , Ridley Scott and Stephen Soderbergh respect the guy. It's not simply a question of accepting someone as a fellow colleague but to see what that brings is bringing in terms of innovative skills.

Hell i don't like the majority of the songs that the Beatles made but do know of the impact that they had on pop music and i would easily say that they are miles and miles better then Enrique Inglesias who i would MOST DEFINATELY QUALIFY AS OVERRATED.

I love Ride the high country man :
- Don't worry about anything. I'll take care of it, just like you would have.
- Hell, I know that. I always did... You just forgot it for a while, that's all.

:( such a sad movie

you speak the truth.

^Great line, I love that film. (Almost like a precusor to Unforgiven)

And once again no James Cameron is not overrated.

I started talking about this in the Terminator Salvation thread but I decided to start a new thread so I wouldn't derail that one. I am a firm believer that Jame's Cameron is over-rated and the passing of time seems to have made him seem like a much better director then he really is. I'll go through his popular films and give my reasons

1. Terminator: A good movie that does well as a futuristic 80's movie. I doubt it'd be considered the classic that it is if there was no T2. I think if Terminator stood alone it wouldn't be considered on the same level as other sci-fi classics like Blade Runner

2. Aliens: This was one of his better films and I do think it deserves the hype it gets.

3. The Abyss: Long, boring, self-rightous story-telling. The directors cut is even worse. It's just one of those movies that thinks it's more important than it is and a lot of what would be called "suspense" I call drawn-out and boring.

4. Terminator 2: Now this is a classic, it dates itself in some ways but almost every movie does. This is the movie that redefined action and sci-fi films.

5. True Lies: Dumb action movie that tries to hard to put comedy in every scene it can. Now I get why some of you may like this movie, it's kinda fun, Jamie Lee Curtis was hot, nice action. But if this film was made by someone like Steven Sommers all that would be talked about is how dumb it is and what a crappy director Sommers is. But for some reason Cameron can get away with it.

6. Titanic: I said in the other thread that this movie was part of a histeria that caused everyone to go see it. It was always highly over-rated, shouldn't have been nominated for best picture, and really poorly acted. I never had one emotional responce to anyones death in this film which is sad cause the real tale of the Titanic is a tragedy.

So in 25 years Cameron has directed 6 films that people know him for, and in my opinion, only 2 of those are worth the praise they get. I'd like to hear other peoples opinions on this.

I dont think he is over-rated at all, Aliens, T1 and T2 are my 3 favourite movies of all time, and you claim that T1 wouldnt be as well known without T2 is ******** i'm afraid. T2 came about because there was such demand for it after the excellent reception T1 got. T1 is a classic and IMO is better than T2.

Aliens is the best action movie ever, True Lies is amazing, and The Abyss is a very compelling movie that isnt his best but is a great movie IMO. I dont think Cameron is over-rated at all and I am the happiest man alive that he is directing again.

My short answer Cameron over-rated no, Titanic over-rated yes

Nope. Never thought so. If he was making a movie a year like most other directors do, you'd gripe about that.

Over-rated? Not at all.

The guy knows his stuff and with the technology avalible at the time he is always first inline to use it, and does amazing things with it!

Cameron is that rock god that went out in his prime because the scene had just changed too much for his liking, and his second coming will change everything we knew about that genre of music.

I think people can get confused by the overrated Titanic and then himself because he made it.

That film is overrated, however he is not.

Am I the only one who thought it didn't deserve all of those Oscars? I mean CG or technical, score, but picture, and director?

It gets four stars in the tv guide. Four ****ing stars for christ's sake. It is only regarded as a classic because how big it was at the time. I watch the film and see nearly nothing that screams "OH MY GOD! THIS WILL SWEEP THE OSCARS!"

He's the best action director easily imo.

Either way you slice it, it still won them.

Everyone has some problem with the oscars in one year or another.

Cameron's a genius and a brilliant filmmaker. He's not only a wonderful storyteller but an expert when it comes to the technical aspects of filmmaking. His work speaks for itself.

so, basically, if you like his movies -and the FX- then he's a good director. that's why you all are saying.

Cameron has a great ability to summon massive performances from actors and is a technical genius whose work has helped push film to new extremes time and time again.

He deserves every single ounce of credit he is given.

And I honestly don't see how anyone can hate True Lies let alone say it's a poor film.

Nope.

Hell no. Dude made The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Aliens. Those alone make him awesome. But Titanic, True Lies, and The Abyss don't hurt his resume either.
