...Or is he just a character that speaks more to the American moviegoer? Spider-Man 3's (and the others) international boxoffice numbers got me thinking about how the Batman series hasn't unadjusted made more than 170mil.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/search/?q=batman&p=.htm See numbers here.

I mean Batman Begins with inflation is the worse performing movie I'm sure but over here (U.S) I believe it's ahead of Batman and Robin in ticket sales. Think about it this way Batman Begins was probably realeased in many more markets than the first four movies and only managed 173mil, even less than the poorer recived Superman Returns and Fantasic Four. It has me wondering rather the international moviegoers are ever going to care for old bats more than they do. Big numbers just don't seem to be in the cards for the sequel on the international front. I know some people are going to think I'm a crazed Spider-Man fan who is braging but I'm not. The point of my thread is that the Batman movies don't seem to be capable of doing huge numbers overseas dispite the fact the he along with Supes and Spidey are the most popular characters. Even in 97 and 2005 with probably far more markets his movies just don't seem to hit that big overseas. Oh I could be wrong but I was just thinking, what say you? Do you think TDK can make as much or more overseas than it does in the states because judging by the numbers I don't.

I see the numbers like this:

260mil U.S

200mil O.S.

Dammit It's Knight, I know I know I screwed up!

It's actually an interesting point... I'm shocked that FF made more internationally than BB in 2005.

You'd think this new Batman franchise would own the international market too, with all the Brits/Aussies they've been casting...

why are you shocked?

FF was the first movie. people didnt know if it was abd or good.
people when hearing batman were thinking B&R.

lets see how much money TDK makes. the fanbase is extreme big.

no i think nolan might be stifling the commericial appeal of the franchise unlike spidey, where spidey movies are being promoted like crazy!

Exactly. When I told people that a new Batman movie was going to be released, they were all "Another Batman? The last one sucked...This is going to suck too."

All of them liked it after seeing it though. Some say its their favourite Batman movie.

So I think things will go better this time around, for the International B.O.

after reading the title, I thought spidey freddie was back!:D

to answer your question: yes

why?

because he's the Goddamn Batman! :batman:

but seriously, Batman is the most popular DC superhero at this point in time. BB had good word of mouth and the DVD sales were just proof on the warm reception from the General Public. it got great momentum now, it should carry itself over well into 2009 and into the box office by the time it takes its bow.

I´m sure it will do fairly well but certainly won´t have numbers like Spider-Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

I doubt it. I was a kid when B89 came out and the hype machine was absolutely insane during that time. The big reason? it was new, innovative, and never before seen.

I don't care how good TDK will be, it just won't match the hype of B89, spiderman, pirates, etc. Batman will always have the stigma of been there, done that attached to it. Frankly, I prefer it that way. I hate movies that are overhyped.

I hope I'm tired of seeing Spiderman its time to take back his crown.

Exactly, B89 was hype palooza. I have never seen a movie hyped this much, including Episode 1.

But ya gotta admitt, it's always fun to see where the hype goes and how they promote it.

ALOT of it is going to have to depend on how WB promotes this film. You have to show poeple what it is to get them excited. They seem to be doing pretty good so far getting the intial buzz going, but they will have to continue it and keep getting bigger with it, so people will want to see it. Begins showed movie goers that the funny comedy aspect has been replaced with the darker, serious look that intially started the big screen franchise, so marketedly correctly, TDK could become as big as this movies blockbusters, if not bigger.

If you hype it, they will come. lol

The days of B89 were insane - I had the Bat symbol tshirt, joker tshirt, hats, etc. Wearing the bat symbol became a fashion statement. The symbol was plastered everywhere and on everything. It was crazy and to think Nicholson got a percentage of all that merchandising. Lucky SOB.

A) Fantastic Four sucked

B) Fantastic Four isn't as popular as Batman (at least in America, among people I know) by any stretch of the imagination. The big four among my generation have always been Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and X-Men. Every guy my age that I know watched at least one of those animated series as a kid.

Obviously the first movie has the advantage (it's not a coincidence that Superman: TM, Batman, and Spider-Man easily own their franchises when you consider inflation) but I just don't see why FF did better internationally relative to its domestic take. Alot of FF fans overseas?

In 1989, I just completed my freshman year in college and was working at my local comics shop for the summer. We couldn't keep anything Bat-related in stock. No matter where you turned, it was Batman this, Batman that.

I remember going to a concert and seeing the lead singer of one band wearing the Joker on a pair of pants and the bass player of another band playing the 60's Batman TV theme during her bass solo.

Batman Begins was the 5th movie in the franchise and was released 8 years after the one that was much maligned. When you consider that, it could've done much worse worldwide. The movie has developed a following on DVD though so you could bet the sequel will perform much better. Especially with the inclusion of Batman's most popular villain.

I think The Dark Knight will do more then Batman Begins but won't make Spider-man 3 Numbers.Which is sad because I have faith in Nolan to deliver while Spider-man 3 was Nothing more then hype.

Batman Begins had an intricate plot and was heavy on dialogue, and the action was underwhelming (if you don't follow the story). The Spider-mans are heavy on specacle, and low on dialogue. That makes it more appealing to non-English speaking people. But The Dark Knight should do a lot more than BB overseas.

Batmans Begins didn't make a huge-ass load of money, but it did pretty darn for a film that's last movie in its franchise is widely considered to be one of the worst films ever made (Batman and Robin). The marketing campaign was very low-key and allowed people to discover how good the film was for themselves, and the great reviews help.

I'm confident that The Dark Knight will be the most successful Batman movie ever. Will it produce Spidey numbers? No. But it'll be a huge hit, especially now that so many people have seen Begins, whether in theaters or on DVD. We also have the draw of The Joker, the most famous villain in comic book history, and the TDK marketing campaign seems like it will be much better this time around.

Doesn´t really matter if the movie is a huge success at the box office cause as long as it´s a really good movie cause that´s all that matters

It does matter that it makes money at the BO, because if it doesn't WB will make sure the third one does, which more than likely means stifling certain creative issues, imo.

But no, it will never be as hyper as SM, because, well, that is milked for all it is worth and loads of kids watch it. I had no idea FF made big bucks, but if true then it's sad cos it was a trashy little Disney film.

TDK will not have mass appeal imo, though i could be very wrong.

also i saw barely any promotion for BB, this hiopefully has atleast a reasonable amount.

I´m sure the movie will do well and then with all the merchandise that will bring in even more money so WB will be pleased even if it doesn´t bring in the kind of numbers that Spider-Man brings in and I don´t think Christopher Nolan would let WB dictate to him how to make the next film and ruin it
