Do you think there could be a point where people doing comics run out of ideas?

What the title says.

This more or less goes for DC and maybe Marvel as well.

I hear lots of complaints and gripes with the New 52. Is one of the reasons because it's hard to top the big story lines that came before?

Thoughts?

The problem with the New 52 stems more from what they did with the characters rather than the stories themselves.

I think what you're really asking is "Do you think there could be a point where people run out of story ideas in general?" Since comics are just another medium like film, books, etc.

To answer your question, I don't know.

Run out of ideas? no

Run out of good ideas? maybe

I think that eventually at some point writers end up running out of ideas. Just look at the people we consider to be legends. The few things that writers like Stan Lee, Chris Claremont, Marv Wolfman, and others really aren't all that good. Denny O'Neil's output is extremely minimal in today's age. And some like Frank Miller have gone absolute bat**** crazy. I'm sure we're going to see the same thing happen to the current generation of Geoff Johns, Scott Snyder, and Brian Bendis while new blood takes over.

some would argue they ran out of ideas a long time ago.

I'd argue the X-Men are already at that point.

As for the superhero genre! I believe they ran out of ideas a long time ago. how many reasons can a guy decide I am going to put on spandex and fight crime?!?revenge? guilt? responsibility?that $%^ has all been done before and as for powers i pretty much figured when they created the X-men " Maggot" and his power larvae that was scraping the bottom of the barrel of the power list!
but as for new ideas not involving superheroes and their war on crime! no way! there's always a new "sandman" or "fables" just out there!
Hell! i just saw a trailer for that new " I Frankenstein" flick staring a good looking on Aaron Eckhart instead of being *Fugly Frankenstein one and he's a hero! i thought that $% would make a cool ass comic books. there will always be new cool ideas for mankind and his comics as long as mankind can dream!

* F%^&*ing ugly if nobody didnt know hehe

I'm pretty sure cavemen asked the exact same question, an here we are telling the same story with slightly different means.

I think it is the Marvel and DC business strategy of putting all the eggs in the same basket that stops them from expanding into new directions in comic books. Without company restrictions , creators wouldn,t need to compete with previous work, they could just go through a different path.

Take ohotmu and flesh out every single character and alien species it barely speaks of and you need 2 lifetimes to do it.

I'm pretty sure cavemen asked the exact same question

Prehistoric fanboy: "Man, these Batcaveman comics are getting rather boring."

Neanderthal fanboy: "I stopped reading them a long time ago, when they killed off neander-Talia and Ace the Batosaurus. Comics these days... Gory and overpriced. When I was young, they only cost one arrow tip and a seashell..."

I think there's the possibility that anything could run out of ideas. Music, film, TV, comics, etc. But because these mediums are so wide and expansive, I doubt it'll happen. Not for a very long time, at least.

If you think they've run out of ideas you're not looking past what you normally read. Pic up some small press/indie stuff and you'll be amazed at some of the awesome things you'll find that are better than the Marvel/DC output.

what he said, you have to understand that marvel-dc comics are very $$$ oriented so basically they are like Monsanto, they're a lot more about ensuring monopoly through copyrights of well established monoculture then creating diversity. And now they're bluntly trying to put as many of those copyrighted icons into film as they can (with the pop corn buckets action figures t-shirts that come with it)

If any one would try and flesh out everything within ohotmu it would take them 2 lifetimes.
