Just curious cause apparently this is a custom for some people during the holidays.

I saw this on some TV show and I was confused by it. But then again, do people really know their mail carriers anymore? I did when I was a kid, but not now.

My parents started getting to know theirs after the last one got arrested for opening cards and taking the cash or checks out.

According to the top answer on that Yahoo link, a person shouldn't give any postal employee cash, they could fired for it. I've personally never heard of it and wouldn't do it myself.

My grandma sent me cash in the mail in a Christmas card a few years ago that never showed up. I didn't think too much of it but I did tell her to never send cash, use a money order. Next year, I get her card but the envelope has been torn a bit and the year after even more so, like the employee wasn't even hiding that they were checking for cash or a gift card. I actually took the time to write an email and complain after that one. Lol

Consider I get a different mail carrier every few weeks, nope

About one in ten of my customers on streets where the carrier walks to their to deliver to door do tip. Maybe a third of that rate for apartment dwellers. I have no experience with folks who have their mailman drive by or who must walk down the block to the community's bank of mail boxes.

I have seen $5 to $300, although I do know carriers who may have gotten $1000 in the past from a single customer. But that generation is dying off and now people google and see that we are not supposed to receive a gratuity. Homemade cookies and brownies, chocolates, wine and whiskey make up about half of the tips. I have one actor that I recognized from Star Trek roles who has given me socks, scarfs and sweaters over the years.
