Doc Savage in the DCU!

Very nice....thanks for the heads up.

I think that this an excellent move by DC. This world is going to have non-powered heroes like Doc Savage, The Spirit, Rima, etc. so why not have the most popular non-powered DC hero, Batman team up with Doc Savage to introduce Doc to a new generation of readers. I know Doc is going to be main hero in this world, but I am kind of interested in seeing what other non-powered DC could show up here. I'd love to see The Question (Vic Sage), The Crimson Avenger (Lee Travis), The Sandman (Wesley Dodds), King Faraday, The Human Target, Green Arrow. I could see see them in this world.
I hope that The Shadow shows up here. I'd love to see The Spider here too.
What other non-powered heroes would you like to see on this world?

Would this really count as canon since they've had Batman team up with the Spirit to start off his book?

That's a good question, The Spirit is in this world and apparently Batman is as well. I am not for sure if that series will eventually be tied to this.

From the Chicago Comic- Con Panel 2009 about the Batman/ Doc Savage Special.

Here is some info about it:
Brian Azzarello will write a "Batman/Doc Savage" special with Phil Noto art and J.G. Jones on covers, Senior Story editor Ian Sattler announced. It will be published in November, and does not take place in the DCU.

"We're creating a 53rd world," Azzarello joked. "Doc Savage is an established character in it and Batman is just getting started. Batman month one." The Dark Knight quickly attracts the attention of established heroes like Doc Savage, Blackhawks, the Spirit, and the Avenger. "There are no superpowers, so I feel comfortable writing that stuff--rather than the stuff you guys love," the writer joked.

"I pretty much taught myself to draw and paint by drawing Doc Savage," Jones said.

A mega-series will follow with art by Rags Morales.

Azzarello also confirmed this Batman would be Bruce Wayne in the special and series.

There will be a new "Spirit" series spinning out of "Batman/Doc Savage," Sattler said.

Awesome!!!! I am ready for this!!!

In a flurry of quick fire questions relating to various characters, beginning with Doc Savage, DiDio revealed:

“The goal for us is to create a world where Doc Savage is the pinnacle of superpowers. Doc Savage in a world where Superman exists doesn’t make sense. He loses what makes him unique and special, but Doc Savage in a world where he is the top of human perfection, now I have an understanding of how this world operates. Joey is working on a story with Brian Azzarello and Rags Morales that brings Doc Savage next to an interpretation of Batman. We’ll see characters like Wildcat and Black Canary in there. You’ll see Justice Inc. appear. You’re going to see this scrambled world that is going to be created and hopefully is going to be able to spin out and sustain stories set within these parameters.”

Wildcat and Black Canary showing up in this pulp inspired non-powered universe. Black Canary without the Canary cry (the golden age version) is basically non-powered.
I kind of hope to see more DCU non-powered heroes here. Too bad DC Couldn't get the rights to the Shadow.
From Min-Mega Con DC Panel a week a go:

The next question was for Phil Noto regarding his upcoming Batman/Doc Savage special. While he couldn’t give any story elements away, Noto did say that the special is a kick-off to the new pulp universe, which will include the old figures such as Doc Savage and the Blackhawks. DC had tried to get the licensing for the Shadow, but it didn’t happen. Noto described the book as “an early alternate universe with an almost-year one Batman.” The book is somewhat ambiguous about the time period, based more on the look and design rather than the specific details. Additionally, in this story, Gotham is modeled after Los Angeles, with Wayne Manor having an ocean front view.

WOULDjudomaster work a non poered earthD? [FOR DOC SAVAGE]NATCH

Judomaster could work. I still think Green Arrow could work, maybe if they used the Grell version without trick arrows.

Dan Didio also confirmed recently that this pulp non-powered world will be one of the 52 earths as well. This is not to be confused with Earth 20 that will be written by Grant Morrison very soon that is a pulp inpired world that includes Doc Fate, Man of The Bronze Helm ( an amagalmation of Doc Savage and Dr. Fate) The Bat-Man, Lady Blackhawk, The Green Lantern, The Mighty Atom and that these heroes make up The Society of Super- Heroes.
So there are two pulp inspired worlds.

can't wait to get this, I've always wanted Brian Azzarella to write the Shadow but I'm happy with this.

heres another brave new world from DC i'be interested inthanks ceb man:alan:

I am really liking what Azzarello and Rags have in store for the New Wave Characters. I really don't mind that The Batman (as he is called) will use guns in this pulp world. I can't wait to see Black Canary. I am lliking also Doc in this and his role as the Major player.

I really hope DC can get the rights to The Shadow. That would be badass.

In a recent interview, it was stated that Didio tried hard to get the rights for The Shadow, but was unsuccessful. That is really too bad, I would have loved to have seen The Shadow here.

I hope to see other DCU non-powered heroes introduced in this pulp world.

"The Spirit along with Doc Savage will provide an interesting combination, because Denny will be played with a little more humor." - Rags Morales

Yay! I was excited by every character involved, but semi-dreading an uptight Spirit. I'm officially stoked for this series.

That cover is phenomenal. I'm really, really looking forward to this. I'm most familiar with the Spirit, and re-read everything Eisner touched rather frequently, but the concept of this book seems well conceptualized, and from what I know of the other characters, the personalities should make for a seriously good read.

All the art I've seen has gotten me excited. It's the writing that I'm holding out judgement on til it's out.

Here's the variant cover.
