So I was thinking Matt Smith for Doctor Fate. For some reason I can see that heavily.

Pedro Pascal.

LOL

That the one thing that sucks about getting a Dr. Strange movie... it means we'll probably never get a Dr. Fate movie. Not that there was any great chance of one happening anyway, but given the similarities of the characters and their names, now it seems like it would be virtually impossible. That's a shame too, because I always preferred Fate and it would be amazing to see the Lords of Order and Chaos on the big screen.

Might conceivably see him on the small screen at some point, though. Maybe as soon as next season on LoT, with the whole JSA thing.

Ugh. Pass. I'd love to see a darker, more serious take on Dr. Fate on a network like AMC or HBO that would do it justice (not pun intended). But I'd rather they keep the character away from the Berlanti Pleatherverse. We already had one CW version of Fate (Smallville)... no need for another one.

So how would you handle this?

A main actor/actress but throw in someone else to voice Fate himself?

That way they can change who plays the main role but have someone else be the voice.

The question is do they overlay both voices when Dr Fate is talking to someone else but have Fate talk to the wearer of the helmet so we can distinguish whose who?

That's an interesting idea... Casting a voice actor for the Fate personality and combining their voice with the actor playing the host.

Hmmmm.... Doctor Fate. A great DC character but a tough one to bring to the big or small screen - particularly as Marvel's going to get there first with Doctor Strange (well, live action, as Doctor Fate pre-dates Doctor Strange in the comics by 23 years ).

Maybe Doctor Fate is a character for DC to consider for its long-term plans. I mean, he's not exactly in the comic spotlight at the moment, but who knows maybe he's a good character to keep up their sleeve, so to speak.

See the thing is Dr Fate unlike Dr Strange might be easier to write a good script for since it does not matter who is behind the helmet as long as the larger magical universe is accurate and better. So I mean casting Dr Fate is very easy since it you do not neccessarily have to adapt Kent Nelson or Kent V. Nelson or Hector Hall or Eric and Linda Strauss and so forth. All that matters is helmet and large magical universe. It would be more interesting talking about director and writer for that movie than actor.

Director I would go 1 of 3 ways.
All big names.

1. Ridley Scott
2. James Cameron
3. Terry Gilliam

Honorable mentions of :

Alex Proyas
Frank Darabont
Tim Burton
G. Del Toro

My casting would be Eva Green. I think she would make a badass Doctor Fate and would play the hell out of the role

a female lead to start out would be a bold choice.
Not sure if DC has the cajones to do that.

I think it would depend on how a Wonder Woman and from what I hear the possible Harley movie does. Based on what I saw in the trailer I don't really have much hope for the Doctor Strange movie. It just seems kinda ..dull so this may help them to decide and do Fate in a new direction

And considering it's the helmet that makes Fate well Fate it can anyone really

And its not like there haven't in comic canon been multiple female Doctor Fates i mean I know of at least two. So its not like going against the comics.

The problem is that the people in charge of making these movies are really not doing anything new or intresting. I mean the Marvel movies was successful because people feel that they are really for the first time Superheroes in films that exists cohesively but all the current DC movies are just making all their heroes from unique characters in fiction into the closest easy sterotype they can find and pretend they are doing something unique and commenting.

But I feel you could do Dr Fate with a lower budget than many others. If we are introduced to of Eva Green as a relative of Kent Nelson who is a failed psychologist who is homeless and we see her get the helmet and rebuild her life while fighting the dark forces of chaos that would be awesome. From a creative perspective Dr Fate must be a complete blessing since all you need is Nabu and the helmet of fate and boom you have a doctor fate movie. You can do almost anything you want with this character.

I don't know. I think Deadpool was a pretty new and ballsy move that paid out massively. It nearly took out Batman vs Superman and Wonder Woman aka the three most famous heroes ever. Even though it was R rated and had a tiny of fraction of the budget and marketting power of this titan.

Now if Suicide Squad makes it as well I can see DC using originality as a way to take on Marvel's dominance. Maybe even release a couple of cheap high quality superhero movies. Can you imagine how fun a Question movie would be? And you can easily make it for less then 50mil. Hell probably even 30 if you don't take any A listers

I absolutely adore your idea. I think this would work amazingly well. Especially if you include Kent Nelson. This could give us a flashbaks to a male Doctor Strange so that the toy companies which hate female characters can get their due

See thats the big thing though I generally meant especially WB when I said they are afraid to try new things. Deadpool took along time to get made that was largely only because Ryan Reynolds was signed to star from the beginning. I really do not see WB trying anything similar. I mean people complain that BvS is a **** movie and their reaction is reahooting Suicide squad to include humour when that most likely hurts that movie.

See the big thing that most movie companies are forgetting by trying to make all their superhero movies with the same tone is the fact that superheroes are radically different in tone and concept. Like a Question movie would not be interesting unless it more recalls detectice noir movies than your average action movie, samething with alot of other more less known superheroes and right now i sadly see that WB is making all their superheroes into generic action movies. But like i said i want more from them since they have a much better group of characters that would fit in a cohesive universe like i mean i am young but I want a movie trilogy with The JSA. There we could have doctor fate for sexist toy makers too. While in modern day we get Eva Green going through complex and mature emotional recovery of her life with the help of the helmet of fate.

I absolutely agree. I don't think they would have risked with something like this before but with Deadpool I think new doors might be opening and companies might be willing to take new risks. Not so much about the humor as trying lesser known characters

Like the Question. I think he would be a perfect risk to take because he would be very fitting for a small budget movie. Which will be essentially an experiment with little risk and potentially a lot of reward. You can make it a 30-50mil budget which even if it's a failure can serve as a tax write off and I can easily see it making 150-200mil. Maybe even more if they play their cards right

Honestly I am still baffled by why they insist on making every comic book movie with 150mil+ budget nowadays

I think it has to do with companies and people not getting the superhero genre. It is from a technical position the most diverse genre in what you can do with the various concepts, ideas and tropes. I mean in the same genre a green archer can deal with political issues as a batlike figure deals with psychology and a gang of four people explore the nature of existence. Since the genre of superheroes is a hodgepodge it means you can do anything from realistic superpeople to campy people where a belt solves the worlds problems. Every superhero movie has a massive budget because no one understands the diversity of concept you can deal with in the genre.

I would go the Young Justice route and make Kent Nelson an elderly man, in some sort of mentor role. We are extremely unlikely to ever get a Doctor Fate movie, so there's no real need business-wise for him to be young, and even if it ever came the day for such a movie, you could do a passing-of-the-baton story to one of the others who have donned the Helmet.

Making Kent an older man also has the advantage of further distancing him from the inevitable Doctor Strange comparisons, and differentiates him more from the rest of the cast. It could also timewise fit with him serving in a possible incarnation of the Justice Society in his youth. Besides, it would really stress the dichotomy between him and Nabu.

I am probably just rationalizing how much I enjoyed seeing him that way onscreen (moreso than I enjoyed seeing him in Smallville, for sure). I don't know, it just seemed to fit so well, especially when he talked fondly of Inza.

Totally. Imagine se7en or true detective but with, wait for it, superheroes.
