Just curious, if aside from certain occupations if anyone actually uses any advanced math(meaning beyond add, subtract, multiply and divide), in THEIR day to day lives?

Well if they do, it probably has to do with their job.

But you ruled out Occupations.

So no... but really a yes.

I think you need to focus on English. Because people do actually use that in THEIR everyday lives.

I don't and half the time I did not use Algebra in Algebra class.

Excluding jobs I say most people don't.

Most people don't; I do. Not because I need to, mind you, but because I find it fun...or at least intellectually stimulating.

Algebra makes up the entirety of simple mathematics. If you've ever needed to add or subtract in your daily life, then SHAZAM! you're using algebra.

Elementary School Math ----> 2 + 2 = ? (The answer is 4.)

Algebra ----> 2 + 2 = x (x = 4)

All algebra is (or most math you learn in high school) is the same stuff you learned under a different name.

Blame it on Super Nintendo Chalmers.

And yes. Daily.

Nope. However, colleges and universities have implemented a new math course for students that do not want to continue in a math or science major.

So there is hope for the younglings.

Yes, But I don't use numbers (my brain is the WOW).

Unless you're literally a rocket scientist or something you're never going to use it. From my experience in the workplace and this message board it looks like we need to focus on grammar and punctuation.

you do if you want to be an algebra teacher! So Ha!.....Punks!

Maybe not explicitly using formulae, but I definitely use what I learnt to, say, intuitively guess the behaviour of two things that are related exponentially. You just picture the graph.

Which I guess was calculus... but still.

I took Algebra and even Calculus in college, and I can honestly say since I graduated, I have never used either in any capacity.

Now, Probability and Statistics is a different story. I have used that a lot. Unfortunately, that course is not given the same weight at the secondary level of education or even the university level.

How much math one uses is reflective on what kind of occupation one has. While a person may not use Algebra per se in every profession, I do think there are more people who have a tendancy to utilize Probability and Statistics in their daily lives more. However, that may actually be indicative on the job one possesses as well.

I have a few times- as well as pythagoras's thingy and stuff to do with the outside of a circle. Pretty much all of this while working in a clothing factory and needing to work out the area of the patterns and therefore the ammount of fabric we'd need and what settings to put on the machine. You'd be surprised when and where you need this stuff.

I use Algebra quite often at work. When programming different applications we often need to put in complicated formulas.

Calculus on the other hand... total waste of time.

What the hell is calculus anyway? I ditched math at 16... I'm thinking I've missed some...

Calculus is Algebra taken one step further and made far more confusing.

Alrighty then. Guess its a good thing that nobody ever needs it, since my math sucks.

calculus is the devil.
if the TI-82 couldnt solve the equation neither could the Boom.
