I've never bought one because I think they look cheap and most images translated weird with the whole no color thing. they really bother especially when there are certain stories collected in them such as Amazing Spider-Man 129( the first appearance of the Punisher) they look ugly and mainly just take up space in stores I've never known anyone who's bought them I'm sure they could make more money if the essential books were printed on the same type of paper and in color like every other TPB marvel makes. what do you guys think?

I have 31 Marvel Essentials....

:csad:

They're ok. They're a cheap way for new fans to learn Marvel history.

Personally, for collection purposes, i'd really like to see more Omnibus editions.

the funny think about omnibus's though when they come out if they're 80-100 dollars list price on Amazon.com Brand new they're 60-80 dollars.

I love Marvel Esssentials!
But I agree, really like to see more Omnibus editions too as they look much better on my shelf that the Essentials

I have always been a big fan of the Essential series, and now Showcase from DC. They are inexpensive, and collect a good amount of comics that would normally cost a fortune. I'd sooner have these books than try and read a comic on the internet. (And, if I'm going to shell out the price for some of these Masterworks, I'd sooner try and buy the actual comic.)

I own every Essential and Showcase that's come out. That doesn't mean I need them, but I feel like I want to support a cheap way to get inexpensive comics. Some are absolutely great to own; while, others make me scratch my head. Do we really need all the Handbooks they've released??? Marvel used to put out two a month, but now have limited it to 1, which is probably for the best. Showcase does 2 a month still; but, I wish they'd get more into the 70's and 80's. (Also, DC promotes some Showcase titles to be released, then they cancel them. That's pretty annoying.)

I only buy Essentials for certain titles especially now that Marvel is going to start coming out with paperback Masterworks.

People don't seem to realize how much color adds to the overhead of making a book. No color is much cheaper and why Essentials are sold fer less than $20.

But, lemme tell ya, while some stories DO look better with color, when you need reference in a pinch they're handy as hell. And at cons, you can snag 'em fer $5 a pop which is almost a quarter of the cover price. They're also a great way to read all the books you will NEVER own unless you were born pre-1961.

I used to really dig the essentials up until I thumbed through an Omnibus and since then I never really went back, and I've since double dipped on the first couple issues of Spider-Man 3 times over, once in essential, once in Masterworks, and now in Omnibus edition, yet, I think certain characters like the Punisher translate well into the whole B&W page.

As do some of the monster titles, such as Tomb of Dracula.

Absolutely. Personally, I think that the old FF and Spidey issues read better with the blast of color thats presented in the masterworks and Omnibus editions. A full page splash of Spider-Man trading blows with Electro needs to be viewed with color to give the full effect in my opinion.

As much as I love color comics, the Essentials are nice for me because I can read a **** load of comics in one collected book. Plus I get to read all the older comics that I'll never get my hands on such as the first few X-Men comics. It's also nice to have when I travel because they're all collected in one book and if it gets messed up on the road it's not super expensive and can be replaced easily

When I look through one, the paper feels as if it'll rip at any moment...so no, I don't buy them.

I've got over 20 Essentials. I like them, they are an inexpensive way of reading stories I wouldn't normally buy, plus you can read whole series and runs in one go. Great for swotting up on your Marvel history/continuity alongside your regular comic books and TPBs.

I got Essential Hulk vol 1 just because Hulk is my favorite character. Other than that I don't see myself getting any more. I don't really care about those old issues enough to dish out a whole bunch of cash for the MW or Omnibus so I think the Essentials are good ways to check out really old comics.

I tend to stick with the newer comics anyway.

I dont really like them either, I got Essential GR volume 1, and while I enjoyed it, the art just didnt seem as good without the colour, if they did them in colour it would be great, but the black & white pages really put me off. The Masterworks stuff is much better.

I love em, I own a few Spidey ones. I think they're great holiday reads, compact, high volume books with great classic tales in them bargain.

I'm tempted to color mine with crayons. Seeing as I would rather stab myself in the face than read them.

I think many of us would be more tempted to stab you in the face with Crayolas...

:yay:

Essential Spider-man vol 1 is what got me into comics in the first place. So yes, I love them. I like how affordable it is to get into a character's history. I would also much rather have a book than read on a computer.

Well Marvel is releasing their Marvel Masterworks in TPB and in color so i'm sold on that.

I figured that this would be the best place to ask, but I just have to know.

I'm seriously considering on purchasing this from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Amazing-Spider-Man-Omnibus-Vol-v/dp/0785124020

And I just wanted to know or not if the Marvel Omnibuses are worth it? I could never get myself into buying an Essential book because I hated the black and white crappy paper quality, but this seems like a cool thing to have.

I dont understand the hatred for black and white.I understand that at times color adds a certain dynamic, but for me story and art take precedence over all when reading comics, and i cant really afford the omnibuses or back issues, so essentials are the best thing for someone like me who enjoys old comics and wishes to have more for their money.
