Does Batman follow a "Straight Edge" lifestyle?

If Batman is a control freak, the time and place for sex would be after he was married and has a wife who could raise the child (i.e. not likely). I doubt he would want to take the chance of fathering an illegitimate child--talk about loss of control. BTW, I think the kid with Thalia reinforces the point.

I think this is a weird but interesting topic. I would agree that having a kid with Thalia, tells us as an audience that Bruce is just a man after all. Remember though, Batman is less of a mystery than Bruce Wayne, the man is a complex person. It's hard to pretend to be a normal person when you are out at night swinging from rooftops in a costume.

Drugs - no
Alcohol - maybe a little, but not enough to seriously impair him. He needs to maintain the Bruce Wayne playboy persona a little
Sex - There's a time and a place (obviously not when he's on a mission!), but in general there's no reason why he shouldn't

You're right except about the alcohol.

The fact that he poured the champaign out over the balcony in TDK proves that he doesn't drink. Not even a little.

But if he DOES need to be seen drinking, a simple switching out the champaign with ginger ale will do it. Drink plenty of that and nobody would be the wiser.

Well, that was in TDK. In B'89 he was drinking wine with Vicki Vale.

So it depends which interpretations you're talking about.

I think that's what it all comes down to. Different interpretations make for different lifestyles. While it's true that Batman 89 showed us a Bruce Wayne who doesn't mind the occasional drink and has sex with women, it's also true that TDK showed Bruce throwing that drink over the balcony. Yet Batman Begins also showed Bruce Wayne taking a sip of champagne at his birthday party to pretend he had been drinking and was drunk.

Remember the Dark Knight Returns? At the beginning Gordon and Bruce have a few drinks together, and Gordon reminds Bruce of the time he "used to fake drinking champagne by having it replaced with ginger ale".

So I guess depending on the medium and the author, you get totally different approaches of the character. In my personal opinion, I think the more credible approach is the one where Bruce doesn't drink. A beer once in a blue moon is not gonna kill him of course, but I wouldn't call that "drinking".

I thought Bats knocked up Talia. Bruce doesn't have time for things like sex. However, many DC females find him very appealing for this exact reason. He's perfect...

did any of you ever think he threw the drink over the balcony in an act of anger over Rachael being with Harvey???

More like, "This Champagne will never dull the pain... of losing my parents...
OH HI RACHEL!!"

He did. And in Morrison's run he had Bruce going to bed with three supermodels at a time.

Sex is a necessary part of a healthy lifestyle and body.

Uhhh...no? That doesn't make any sense.

i'd say he does. he doesn't even seem to like drinking alcohol. quite on his way to being the sage/vicegerent.

Sex - Yes, he's a human being. However a strong relationship with said woman is another matter.

Drugs - The Venom storyline had him taking performance enhancing drugs after failing to save a young girl. He did it for the mission - to become a better Batman. He lost his mind, saw the error of his ways and went cold turkey. I think that would be the extent of it.

Alcohol - Yes, and again, differering on interpretation. But I don't see him drinking to excess.

I don't want Batman to be a man****e. He should just get a girlfriend/wife.

By the way, "Man****e"...sounds like a bad 90's superhero comic. I can imagine the ad:

"Rob Liefeld presents...the horniest hero since James Bond. The Mantastic Man****e! Yes, it almost sounds like the kewlest band in the world, "Manowar", so you know it'll be AWESOME! Don't be a loser, buy the *€%#ing comic this @#*€ing month."
