Hey everyone,

I was just curious.....but would Superman be classified as following a "straight-edge" lifestyle?

And by straight-edge, I mean that he doesn't drink alchohol, smoke, do drugs, or be sexually promiscuous....

Aside from Superman Returns ( and Bad Superman in Superman III ), has Superman been shown to drink alchohol in the comics? I don't think he has.......

I don't believe Superman smokes or takes drugs either.....lol.

And, I think he has been faithful to Lois, no?

I think he drinks very lightly on special ocassions. He certainly doesn't smoke or do drugs.

Speaking of SR, I'd like to thank Bryan Singer for making Superman a badass that likes to tempt wives away from their romantic partners. Superman is a character that really benefits from being adulterous.

I'm just picturing Supes free-basing Magic Kryptonite...

Lois was engaged to Richard. Just to be precise.

And don't forget definitely faithful to Lois!

Does he smoke after sex............not sure, he's never looked.

Would drinking alcohol or doing drugs have any effect on Superman?

Though promiscuity is a bit much he is a ladies man to be sure. His romances are a Little Limited though.

Personally I doubt if Superman drinks anything stronger than Kool-Aid or 7-Up. If an "ordinary "person can become dangerous(esp behind the wheel of a car) after becoming drunk or getting "high" on mind altering drugs, can you imagine what a "soused" Superman would be like? No, just like a doctor he has to stay sober 24/7 in case he's suddenly"on call"(the same applies to any other hero/heroine in the Marvel or DC Universe- super powers and substance abuse(whether booze or mind altering drugs) make for an extraordinarily dangerous mixture!

Next thread: Is Galactus "straight-edge"? Does he drink alcoholic planets?

Does he smoke after sex.............
no... but, she does

on the drinking matter, my question would be, can superman even get drunk? or high for the matter

s to whether or not alcohol or drugs can affect Superman in the same way that they do "ordinary" humans, I suspect that not even The Man of Steel knows( Clark Kent probably has a few jars- reporters aren't exactly teetotallers as a class), but the precautionary principle kicks in- better safe than sorry. Superman is most probably immune to AIDS and othe earthly diseases but what if his partner of the night falls pregnant(can Kryptonians even interbreed with humans successfully?)?

Think about it!

You didn't watch a certain film that had an answer to that question? Also if help is needed then if he had access to Kryptonian technology then it might be advanced enough to help.

Superman cannot get drunk, get high, or catch any Earthly disease. His invulnerability/molecular structure prevents it. We (humans) can get drunk or high because of the damage those substances cause to our bodies. These substances have no effect on Kryptonian physiology. Now, if you were to somehow get your hands on Kryptonian moonshine...weeeellll doggie! Watch out!
Also, he wasn't actually drunk in Superman III. We were seeing the effects of the synthetic Kryptonite, that's all. Him being in a bar and acting all hostile/drunk, just fit into the characterization of that mindset.

As for the question of the straight-edge lifestyle. I would say "Superman" is absolutely straight-edge. I would say that "Clark" would not do drugs, but I have no problem with him having a drink or two with some friends (as in SR). This helps Clark appear to be a "normal person" and aid the disguise. However, it is also quite viable (especially for a "geeky Clark" ala the Reeve films and SR) to just not drink. Some people just don't drink.

Well said.

As Superman I cannot really see him in a situation where someone would offer him a beer, he doesn't seem to just hang out. With the JLA I cannot recall ever seeing MManhunter or Batman having a beer, so I think it just does not come up.

Now say as Clark with a friend, kicking back and having a beer, but he would not feel the alcohol.

If he enjoys the flavor, then that is about all he is getting out of it.

For the most part I see him as rather straight edge. I certainly cannot see him being a slob like Hancock or something like that.

Even if drugs and drinking have no effect on him, I doubt he wants kids to see him doing anything he would not want them to do.

Besides his superpowers, very much of his character is lead by example.

I always figured Superman could probably drink the contents of a beer truck and not get so much as a small buzz. Now if it was Kryptonite flavored beer, it might beer a different story altogether.

Sure! He look like he almost ready to pass out with another sip here. He even got the 5 o'clock shadow. ;)
