Does the planned Strike teach Marvel a lesson on how to get focused?

It better be.

All this time, Marvel has been doing and telling “We wanna make Ant Man, we wanna make Namor, we wanna make Luke Cage, we wanna make Deadpool, we wanna make Black Panther, we wanna make Black Widow, we wanna make She-Hulk, we wanna make Iron Fist, we wanna make Silver Surfer (ok it’s that all, I think there are many more)” Oh, horsecrap. Just do films two by two, and plan them a long time beforehand. Look what happens with Thor. Scrambling for actors in the most critical time. Captain America is in even more sadder state. It’s obvious that they could plan getting on the directors way back, but they don’t even do it and instead dreaming on other projects to woo fans. Enjoy being bitten in the ass with that kind of strategy. Making movie is certainly not the same as making comics as it takes a whole lot of resources, investments and planning.

First of all we've known about Matt Vaughn taking on Thor for weeks before it became official, and the only reason the filming is starting so soon is because of the strike which they have no control over, and they want to at least get the filming done before that. This shows that they ARE focussed. NOT focussed would be waiting and waiting until the strike had already begun at which point they would be screwed, but that didn't happen because they had a plan.

As for Captain America, well word is the director they want won't be available when they want him so, BECAUSE they have all these other projects in the planning stages, the sames ones you were talking crap about, all the have to do is simply switch out Captain America for something else.

Really, the very reasons you give for why Marvel is "unfocused" prove to me that they ARE focused. They work on their movies two at a time, but when something beyond their control comes up (it happens) and one of the movies has to be delayed, they already have a plan "b" with numerous other heroes they can choose from to get out in the mean-time.

what strike are you reffering to here?

The director's, writer's, and screen actor's guild contracts are all running up, and I guess new negotiations aren't going very well and there's going to be a huge hollywood strike coming up.

That's why Thor filming is starting so early, so they can have that done before the strike begins and it screws them over.

oh thanks for the clarification

So, that means we will have a slow year for movies coming up unless it gets resolved soon.

Has Hollywood ever gone on strike before?

Yes, but from what I understand this will be one of the bigger ones. I believe there was a huge strike in the 40s as well but I don't know much about that.

EDIT: here's an article about it http://www.iatse728.org/home/strike.htm

They're forced to get focused by Merrill Lynch. Merrill needs results on the $ 500 million loaned to Marvel in the next 2-3 years.

So, it's a matter of "push come to shove" rather than Marvel's own iniatiative.

I think you're confusing Marvel with WB.

The strike outta be lashed against the likes of Fox and WB (and maybe Sony). The movies outta be under the control of the filmmaker and not the bloody executives. :cmad:

[...] "It's like we're talking two different languages," said one prominent TV writer. "We want improvements; the studios want give-backs."
So what does this mean for TV viewers and folks who flock to the multiplex every weekend? Well, in the case of the latter, nothing much initially. Films are done so far in advance that there will be a considerable backlog if a strike should happen. (Further on down the line, there will be a slowdown in movie releases.)
it looks like it may be time to start building up the ol' DVD collection - or making plans to actually read all those books you meant to over the years.

I hope there is a strike.

What does that mean? How could they have thought more in advance? The only way I can think is if they rushed all there films into production.

Well I suppose they have planning people who should check for things like that...
and when an entire industry is about to face a crisis, don't tell me there isn't some well informed people to consult...
Within the next few months, the studios' contracts with the unions representing writers, actors and directors will all expire.
[...]

On one side, the WGA - which tends to be the leader among the Hollywood unions - is looking for language or improved language that covers all the new technology (online, Video on Demand, DVD sales). On the other side, the studios want to make major changes in the residual payment structure that has been the backbone of union contracts since the 1950s. (Union members get residuals every time one of their episodes or films is released on DVD, sold overseas or resold for syndication.)

They should have know this was about to happen, thus preparing accordingly

FVD = F(my first name) Van Dam.

It's been my persona for the past 5-6 years all thanks to a one Mr Monday Night. I'm glad he quit the WWE following the events of what happened with Chris Benoit.
